Jackie's Girl by Kathy McKeon Book Summary

New York Times Bestseller

“McKeon's delightful memories have been tucked away for fifty years, and thankfully, she has brought them out to share the enchanting magic of Camelot with us all.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Celebrity watchers who covet an insider’s role will find McKeon’s frank yet benevolent memoir to be both a sobering reality check and an engaging foray into the ever-fascinating world of the Kennedy dynasty.” —Booklist

An endearing coming-of-age memoir by a young woman who spent thirteen years as Jackie Kennedy’s personal assistant and occasional nanny—and the lessons about life and love she learned from the glamorous first lady.

In 1964, Kathy McKeon was just nineteen and newly arrived from Ireland when she was hired as the personal assistant to former first lady Jackie Kennedy. The next thirteen years of her life were spent in Jackie’s service, during which Kathy not only played a crucial role in raising young Caroline and John Jr., but also had a front-row seat to some of the twentieth century’s most significant events.

Because Kathy was always at Jackie’s side, Rose Kennedy deemed her “Jackie’s girl.” And although Kathy called Jackie “Madam,” she considered her employer more like a big sister who, in many ways, mentored her on how to be a lady. Kathy was there during Jackie and Aristotle Onassis’s courtship and marriage and Robert Kennedy’s assassination, dutifully supporting Jackie and the children during these tumultuous times in history.

A rare and engrossing look at the private life of one of the most famous women of the twentieth century, Jackie’s Girl is also a moving personal story of a young woman finding her identity and footing in a new country, along with the help of the most elegant woman in America.

Good book. I really enjoy reading about Mrs. Kennedy. Kathy did a great job putting her story into words. I am glad she has those memories and she shared it with us. You get to see Mrs. Kennedy as a real person and not just a celebrity.

Love this book!!. A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The author made me feel as if I was right there. A wonderful memoir of a young girl and the most famous and classy First Lady we’ve ever had.

Heart warming. It’s easy to fall into a spell of the story as told so beautifully and sincerely. Highly recommend.

Jackies girl. Really loved reading the story. Such a different perspective not based on secrets and scandal but made the Kennedy Family very human and real. Also enjoyed Kathleen's story of her life in Ireland and her transition in America.

I couldn't put it down. I loved it, well done!

An intimate look into the daily lives of the Kennedy family. Couldn't put the book down for a moment. Stories are so well weaved together. You really get to know the author. Great read

A Wonderful Insight to both the worlds of the author and Mrs Kennedy. A tribute to two amazing lives, that of Jackie Kennedy and her amazing courage, perseverance and culture and that of Kathy McKeon for her success in sharing such a heartfelt tremendous story. Thank you for sharing with us such a lovely insight to a very admired person of mine, Mrs. Kennedy. Behind the gossip, fashion and jet set image it was so inspiring to see the love and kindness, the day to day care and generosity of such a cherished person. One that touched many lives, and most certainly yours! Congratulations Kathy on such an eloquent read and book.

A great read. For anyone who grew up during the Kennedy time in the White House this is a great read for our fascination with Jackie. I enjoyed the book and am glad you wrote it. If Jackie had lived longer I truly believe she would have written a memoir herself later in her life.

Very good. I liked this book very much! It really gave a great insight as to what went on in the Kennedy family during some very trying times. Kathy really makes you feel like you're right there living this life with her. Very well written with true love & respect for the entire Kennedy family!

Jackie’s Girl: My Life w/ the Kennedy Family. I bought the book and read it right away. McKeon was the perfect person to grace Mrs. Kennedy, Caroline and John as her assistant. Having just come from a farmland in Ireland to the exciting city life of New York, what better way of finding out who you are with the poise of the Kennedys. Together they bonded for the time they were together. McKeon had her life as Mrs. Kennedy certainly had hers. A good read.

Jackie’s Girl. Very well written and very interesting .
