Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Great message. This book should be read by everybody! This is an amazing book, I obviously recommend it to everybody.

Empowering. This book puts the history, present, and future into a story that is undeniably amazing. This story is the truth and I am so thankful that and amazing black author has decided to put this story out into the world.

Wow. This book is really good. The subject is harsh and sad, but well written. Some notes: The language is really raw and hard to read, so I took one Starr away from it. Lol There are some really funny parts in the book. This is just a hard subject to deal with in general so... yeah. *sobs* All the gang stuff. One star taken away because I hate those sort of things. The language seems really over exaggerated. I mean, seriously, I get that they live in a bad neighborhood, but I find it hard to believe that anyone talks like that, much less African Americans. All-in-all, pretty good. Something I’ve noticed tho. A black man can say he hates whites but a white man can’t say he hates blacks. Neither are okay, but America is not equal, and we need to think about exactly who we’re elevating in our culture. Also, to the person who says that they think that whites should die, I AM WHITE. HOW YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU SHOULD DIE BECAUSE YOUR SKIN IS A DIFFERENT COLOR, NOT GOOD HUH?

20/10. i completely fell in love with this book !!

The hate u give. Such a powerful, emotional, and amazing book. I wanted to keep turning the (virtual) page. Definitely recommend reading its worth your time. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿.

Good stuff. Thank you for writing this

Should be required…. This book should be required reading for parents and anyone who teaches or works with high school-age kids. The story does an incredible job of putting the reader in the mindset of others, and how and why we often see things so differently. A better understanding of others is the first important step on the long road to true justice and equality. I think this book just might help us get there.

THUG. Love it.❤️❤️❤️❤️

🤯🤯. Holy moly. I entirely LOVED this book. It gave a whole new perspective on systemic racism and police brutality. If you are thinking about his book, BUY IT!! It is so worth it. ⚠️Warning: There are many cuss words and if that’s not ur thing be careful⚠️

Amazing!. Everyone... no matter if you’re black, white, or purple NEEDS to read this book.

GREATEST BOOK!. This book was 300 times better than the movie. So much detail that the movie had skipped out on. When I started to read the sample of the book and it came to an end, I NEVER hesitated and instantly clicked the purchase and continue reading. Best reading decision I made! This book is amazing because with the time we’re going through now, it’s making us look and see how this could and is really happening. It opens your eyes to the reality that we are living in. This book has encouraged me to stand up for what I believe in and fight the good fight for what I believe in. MUST READ!!!! Read before the movie, you will appreciate the movie more.

AMAZING ❤️✨⭐️. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I almost cried multiple times reading this book because of how real it is. I was already big on the BLM movement before I read this, but after I read this, it really opened my eyes and shifted my perspective. Yes, this is a fictional book, but it’s message is real and police brutality and violence against black people is real, and this book preaches about that. We need more voices like Starr in this world because this is a real thing. This book is amazing and it’s more than just a story.

Definitely Amazing. I want to start off by saying that I am super glad that I finally own this book. And picked it during black history month. I and in love with Angie Thomas writing/books. She will be definitely author I will be auto-buying her books. I did see the movie maybe a while back. I loved the movie but definitely love this book way more. After reading this book I felt they could of added more to the movie. But I highly recommend this book. I read Concrete Rose first because I wanted to read the back story of the characters. I love all the character’s they all my favorites. I wasn’t disappointed at all reading this book. I got so lost reading this in a good way. I love the way the author picked her characters names and the meaning behind them. I love the message in this book. This definitely A reread for me. About Book- Starr is a young black girl living two different lives. One where she goes to a fancy school. And second where she lives with her family. When her long time friend is shot by a cop. Starr starts questioning her life and how to use her voice. I highly recommend this book to anyone young and old. I will be definitely telling everyone about Angie Thomas books.

BLM ✊🏿 ✊🏾 ✊🏽. Tbh I think white people should be killed and discriminated against. They deserve it.

Great book. Great book that focuses on systemic issues. All of the bad reviews are white supremacists

Amazing. I absolutely this book. It is my favorite book. I would definitely recommend reading.

Mind-tugging and emotional. This book had me by the first couple of pages. It was an amazing book to read. I had heard that everyone who had read it before me recommended it and said the same as me. Really a great book!! I was mad, angry, happy, and wanting to take a stand while reading it. Definitely a good read!! NOT A WASTE of time.

“ Find Your Voice “. Omg Angie Thomas is my favorite author, and reading The Hate U Give made me fall in love with books! And I used to hate reading! Her book inspired me so much because I’m a 16 year old black girl who has to stand up for myself and my people because this world is full of hate. Definitely one of the best books and movies of all time! #blm #findyourvoice #thehateugive

Good. This book is riveting. For an old WASP like me, who grew up in a town with two token black families it was an education as well as a superb read. Thanks for communicating.

Jaw dropper. Absolutely stunning view point. Great read.

The Hate U Give. The Hate U Give is so beautifully written. This story gives you such a deep insight to the reality of the issue of racism in this country. I cried several times while reading it, as it really opens up your heart and mind. Angie Thomas is a brilliant writer. God bless.

Great read. Great read

i recommend!. this book is awesome. after i read the book the movie was a bit dissapointing especially since they took out a main character but if you have watched the movie you will definitely like the book a lot better

A must-read. This is the only book I've read that is worthy of five stars. This book is you a glimpse into the life of a Black teen in America. Starr's story is so empowering. Please read this book.

The Perfect Book. this is literally the most amazing book i’ve ever read. it’s so moving and inspiring - every character is fully fleshed out with flaws while still being lovable and understandable. a perfect translation of this lifestyle and the struggles it brings, while not shying away from showing the good parts

Not helpful. Thanks, queen, for a very unhelpful review of this book by suggesting that white people should be killed, that they deserve it. An incredibly racist statement.

Good book. Love the story and the character prefer to read the books hem the movie. Explains more and way better story line in the book.

Liked is than..... LITERALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!

No justice. No peace.. This book was great! It reminded me alot to all that has happened this past year and now. I know like Starr stated there will be a change don’t know when or how but it will come! No justice. No peace✊🏾

Hateful. I couldn’t even get through the sample. The author is trying yo make people fear and hate cops. It’s very unfortunate…

Love it. Love this book

Very Engaging Book for the Family. My husband and I read this book together, and I ended up reading it with my younger brother. It puts things in perspective and touches on reality.

lit. lit

Amazing. Such a real book that brings up crucial aspects of racism. Written so beautifully with ease and passion. 10/10

Can only recommend. First book to make me cry, definitely worth a read…

✨Amazing!✨. Loved this book!!

My new favorite. Definitely the best book I’ve read in a long time and it really makes you think about what the world is like for others and how some are more privileged. It gives you a chance to see the everyday live for a lot of people. I’d recommend this book to anyone and everyone

Amazing!. A must read!

So powerful. One of the best books I have ever read in my life. It was so filled with passion, feeling, and depth. Unbelievable

Great book, would recommend. ......

Eye-opening. this books is wonderful and harsh and makes you think. you can feel starr’s pain throughout this book and you want to punch her racist friend in the throat. at first i didn’t love the raw language and the gang stuff. but i think it really showed the dynamics of her world and situations. unfortunately this book is very accurate in todays world and it doesn’t take much for situations like this to happen. i think this book is a must read for ages 13-21. use discretion however as this book contains many sensitive topics that the author handles truthfully and empathically. five stars from me.

This book is awesome to read. I know she lost her best friend in the hands of police brutality, now she must face justice for officer that he kill her best friend.

Yes!. One of the best books I’ve ever read to be honest. Everything about is good, you must read it. You won’t be disappointed.

WOW. This book is amazing! I was forced to read it for a class I took, and I’m glad this was the book we had to read! Such detail, very easy to relate to, I mean, the list of exciting things that came in this book is probably endless!

Racist. Racist

Even better than expected!. I’d heard only good things about this book, so I went in with high expectations. The Hate U Give exceeded them. I was really looking for something to broaden my horizons and learn about Black culture, but I really don’t like non-fiction. This book was perfect. The narrators tone, dialogue, writing-style — it all made the story feel so genuine. 10/10 recommend this one!

I need a sequel to Starrs Life. So much better than the movie. There are parts in the book that I wished that made it in the movie.

Wowwwww. I love it

Beautiful. This book is even better than the movie. You can empathize with the characters. Shades of grey are explored without over simplifying. I was inspired. If we can figure this out- how to live together- how to make sure everyone has opportunities, it will be amazing. I really feel we can get there if we keep pushing.

Help.. Why does this book stop me from continuing reading past page 34? It says there’s 400 pages, yet I’m only seeing 34? Anyone else having this problem? Of course apple won’t help me, so maybe one of you can.

Absolutely incredible. Favourite book. Made me cry, laugh, and raise my fist. Too good for words.

HAVE TO READ!!!. AMAZING Could not put it down , sad I cried so many times. Have to read I would say 11+ could read depends on if the kid can take the emotion in the story. I am 11 and I read it, it is a sad and reminder of what people actually go through! Motivate you to try and do something and not just sit there!!

Love. Love the book

Love it!. This is an amazing book! You should definitely consider reading it.

Wow. This is the first book I read, outside of school of course. I have to say, I love it ..... it set a pretty high bar for the next book.

Amazing first novel. Thank you for the first person insight

Amazing!!. Amazing!!! Must read! My new favourite book!

Phenomenal!. This novel is a must read.

Incredible. This book was amazing. I loved it so much. Tears, laughter, happiness all in one beautiful read

Good book. Gripping book, very good perspective. The narrators voice is important and unique in terms of not enough young black ‘everyday’ characters

Great title. Amazing book! covers a lot of political and racial issues in today’s society. Helps me understand as an African Canadian what it’s like to be put into those types of situations. Great book Angie Thomas covers all of the “touchy subjects” in this book. Shows the black point of view and what it’s like to be racially discriminated against almost every day. Having to hide your true self every day is something I totally understand and go through

Best book I have ever read!!!!. It literally had everything! Romance, Adventure, Friendship, etc. Also, especially the end, was so touching, that book really spoke to me and I can tell you in 20 years I will still remember it! Definitely recommend it, BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!
