Roar by Cora Carmack Book Summary

New York Times bestselling author Cora Carmack's young adult debut: Roar.

In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora's been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage. She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

A thrilling fantasy YA you'll never want to let go of!. I feel extremely giddy and enthralled right now. That ending just made me crave and yearn for soooo much more of this vibrant new fantasy filled with storms and stormhearts that Cora Carmack has created. I've read a whole lot of Ms. Carmack's New Adult work before and loved every single one of them, but this? Holy hell, this is on a whole other level. She's developed an iridescent, magical world you'll get sucked into and wouldn't want to step out of. You'll get so lost in this whirlwind of a story and by the third chapter or so, you'll desperately want to be a storm hunter yourself. Or rather, be part of Locke's band of storm hunters, to be precise. That's what happened to me anyway. You know how with some fantasy Young Adult novels, the beginning or the first book of the series tends to become a bit dragging because of all the character introductions and the way it builds up that new fictional world for you? I didn't feel any of that with Roar and I must say, I'm truly impressed. I prepared myself to feel even a smidgen of that, but surprisingly, those were all established at the same time you truly dive into the story. It was like all the introductions were tucked and woven into the storyline itself, so you find yourself in a full sprint right from the very first chapter and not get the slightest bit confused as to who is who. I loved every second of this book. It certainly transported me into the Land of Caelira and dragged me along with Rora in all her adventures. The character development was spot on. Each of them were memorable and played such significant roles in the story. There were also so many secrets to uncover, and twists and turns to anticipate. It will keep your attention on the book from cover to cover, that's for sure. The more the story unraveled, the more I got addicted to it. The more I never wanted it to end. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

Top priority pls read!!!!!!!. I went shopping in Barnes and noble the other day, ran across this wonderful start to a series, I dnt live near many bookstores so when I realized this is a trilogy I was at first really excited because I dreaded the end that was going to come from finishing the book, and then I come to find out that there’s not just a sequel but there’s two more books in the series, but here comes the heartbreaking part, on the iBooks store, only the first book in the trilogy is provided, since no bookstore in my town has the next two books, I may end up losing the story line before I have the chance to read the next two...... pleaseeeeee add the rest of this series. It’s the best read I have had in a long time and was heartbroken that I have to wait to find out what happens next , hopefully I’ll find a well stocked book store in the meantime.... I HOPE

Not bad. Roar has the start of something big. I feel in a sense it could really become this epic fantasy.  Aurora is part of a royal family. But unlike the others, she doesn’t have the power, that everyone thinks she does. Her mom is desperate for her to marry to save the Kingdom. But she doesn't want to. Aurora is a strong willed character and devises a plan. One that could save the kingdom, and not have to marry someone who is unworthy of her.  One thing I loved about this story, is it felt as if the different storms. Were their own entity. They were unpredictable and tried to protect their hearts. Which, the Stormlings are out to steal. It’s actually a bit sad. There’s a lot going on in Roar. So you have to really focus and be there. The only issue I had, is that I didn’t connect with the characters. The POV that it was told in, was a little hard to follow. This is the first Cormack book I’ve read. I loved the world that she built though.  There is no lack of danger in this story. I mean, how could there not be when dealing with storms. Aurora has something inside of her as well, that she never realized was there. So there’s also a mystery of who really is “Roar”.  Overall, I give this Three Boundless Stars.

Awesome read!. Being someone who very rarely reads paranormal, a story has to really intrigue me to make me want to read it. When I heard Cora was writing a YA paranormal, I knew I would read it since she is one of my must buy authors. When I found out the premise of the story and she released a teaser, I was very much looking forward to it. I was not disappointed. Cora has created a unique and intriguing world full of twists and turns that will grip you until the very last page and leave you wanting more. Whether you're a Cora fan, a paranormal fan, a YA fan or not, you're going to want to add ROAR to your must reads!

OMG LOVED IT!. I have been waiting for this book forEVER. Cora teased us with is 2 years ago and since then I have been itching for her to write it. I couldn't be MORE excited with how AMAZING this book is. For real, it was WONDERFUL and EXHILARATING and everything you love in a high fantasy and more. Storms, magic, royalty, OH MY. Aurora has a kingdom to rule and in order to do that she must have magic. Only, she has none. She is a fierce woman with the will to do all she can to save her kingdom, to protect those she loves and to be true to who she thinks she has to be. So Aurora leaves her life and future marriage to find a way to save her kingdom. She will do everything she can to find storms and rule them one by one. Well, once the troupe of hunters she has joined teaches her. ALL THE FEELS! And they are because of ONE word with SO many meanings in this book: Hunter. I was SO lucky to read an advanced copy of this book. BUT that also means I get to sit on my feelings for ALL THE DAYS while I wait for the second book. Each character in this book was more wonderful than the next. Cora could write a novella for each of them and I would pay anything she asked. They became my family reading this and I wasn't to know everything I can about them. Then we had the book itself! THIS WORLD. It was such an adventure. You can tell that Cora did her research because this world felt like somewhere I have lived. I felt a kinship to it and OBVIOUSLY that isn't possible, but it goes to show how much at home Cora makes you feel. The Storms, the family, the cities, all of it feel familiar enough for you to get lost in the words.

Storm magic, self discovery and adventure - yes, please!. “Challenge a tempest, survive it, and you become its master.” – The Tale of Lord Finneus Wolfram Cora Carmack’s Roar is churning with intriguing danger and crackling electricity like the storms it seeks to conquer in its pages. The idea of a world so wrought with storms that they must be challenged to be defeated, and that there are humans capable of wielding their power has a great promise for action and magic. And that’s exactly what you get as this journey begins. Aurora comes from a long line of Stormlings, who reign over lands as royalty and offer protection to its citizens. Rora, however, has no magic of her own and must marry a Stormling Prince from another land in order to preserve her family name. And if her secret, her familial shame of being born without magic is discovered before the marriage, all could be lost. A chance meeting changes Rora’s story, the very possibility for being the princess that her mother and people have always needed her to be. Can she challenge a storm to gain her own power? “And what you said earlier, about feeling like you were in the wrong life? I’ve felt that too. Felt it right up until the moment I decided to stop trying to run from storms and hunt them instead. I know what it looks like when someone finds the life they were meant to have.” This world immediately had me tangled into it’s effortless dialogue, beautiful world-building and strained relationships. The storms themselves are mesmerizing in their description, being nearly sentient in their ability to seek out and destroy. Having lived to long in an area that has unpredictable, and at times extreme, weather… I could feel and appreciate the temperament of the different storms meandering through the pages. And all the while, I still felt a greater connection of the tempests with the plot itself. Each incident leads you to dwell on the delicious suspicions that surround their magic and Aurora’s magic-less body. The aptly named Rage season exposes the readers to a gambit of emotions, from anger to despair, playfulness to wanting–it is a non-stop thrilling ride through the cities and wildlands of Caelira as Aurora seeks answers and confidence. “Sometimes she was Aurora. Confident. Clever. Cultured. Sometimes she was Rora. Afraid. Alone. Ashamed. And more and more, she was Roar–bold, brash, and increasingly baffled by the situation in which she found herself.” I particularly enjoyed the multiple POV in this book as more and more interesting characters were introduced, including a stunning villain who wields terrible power and yet we have to wonder what their true motivation is… is their ill-will justified in some odd way? And can anyone stop the oncoming destruction? I feel like everyone has a back story in this world, and it is welcome. The more Roar, the better. I cannot wait to see how the rest of Carmack’s series unfolds! This first book in the left me wanting more and more. Her practiced hand at building romantic tension shined in the later chapters, reminiscent of some other recent popular YA/NA crossovers (but without heading into NA territory). Highly recommended read for those who love fantasy, adventure and romance. Eagerly waiting for the next chapter.

LOVED. I loved this book. It's beyond my favorite book now! I love the characters and the storyline. I felt a connection between and with the characters. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

Loved the characters. From the start, I loved the characters and their interactions. Princess Aurora had my attention right away. She has spent the majority of her life hiding away from everyone, keeping a dangerous secret, no friends, only her books for company. Aurora longs for a life of adventure, but instead, she’s thrust into an arranged marriage with a neighboring prince. Cassius is charming, flirtatious, and a little bit dangerous. But as Aurora learns more about Cassius, she is more and more determined to not marry him. She instead joins a group of storm hunters, seeking her own path. It’s this motley group of hunters that I really fell in love with. Duke is the father-figure Aurora has always needed. He’s there to guide and listen. Jinx is the best friend and sister Aurora needs, teaching Aurora about magic in a way that could never be imagined. Ransom is the quiet, older brother, always there to protect. And then there is Locke. Fiercely independent, he takes Aurora on as a student, offering to teach her about storms and hunting them. He helps Aurora find her true self, all while flirting and falling for her. Locke is enough to make any woman swoon, especially a princess. Or this reader. The various mysteries of Roar held me rapt throughout. Who is the Stormlord? And, more importantly, what is he up to? What happened in the Kingdom of Locke that Prince Cassius is hiding? Will we ever learn what Aurora’s stormling powers are? The pace and plot points kept me focus and interested throughout the book. I struggled with the world-building in Roar. More than anything, it was an effort for me to understand how storms have feelings and hearts. Over and over, the characters are controlling the storms with magic and stormhearts. I can easily accept the magic of witches like Jinx, but the physical heart of storms baffles me. Roar is a great first book, with characters I can’t wait to follow as the series progresses. 5 Stars for the characters. 3 Stars for the magic of storms. 4 Stars overall for Roar. I received Roar free in exchange for my honest review. Thanks to author Cora Carmack, Tor Teen, and Ink Slinger PR for providing this opportunity.

Loved!. Cora Carmack thrills in this new Young Adult Fantasy novel. It's no secret that Carmack is an amazing storyteller; from her swoony boys, to the headstrong yet relatable heroines. I know that after reading a book by her, that I'll be transported to into another world. And that's always welcome in my book. If you couldn't tell before, I loved this. I liked the world building, the characters were all on point, and I look forward to being able to continue in a new series. Unfortunately, I didn't much care for the romance. Gasp! I know right, but I felt like Aurora was able to hold her own without any type of boy in the storyline. Yes, romance is nice to have but Roar is much more than that! It's all about a heroine we can relate to. Rora is strong, beautiful, vulnerable, and I liked her spunk. I think she's one of my favorite characters Carmack has ever written. As I was saying earlier about the world building. I thought it was very well thought out and interesting. I loved the whole concept of storm magic. And once secrets start coming out, well it's only the beginning a wonderful ride. Now as I also mentioned before about the guys. While I didn't much care for them on a romantic level, I did very much like them as characters. The two boys in question are Prince Cassius and Locke. I liked them both for different reasons and even though one can be considered bad; I loved him all the more for it. Overall, I think this is the start to something wonderful. Fans of fantasy, strong female leads, and romance will devour this book like there is no tomorrow. And then begging for the author to hurry up and write the next book! I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm going to be like that! This is a huge GO and no doubt on top of my list of what to read next.

Gorgeous Cover and Amazing Story. I fell in love with Roar's cover first. Then I fell in love with the story itself. For me, Roar was a slow read that I wanted to take time and savor every minute of. The idea of the storms having power and the Stormlings having to use magic to defend against them was truly unique. More so, I loved Locke and the other storm hunters. They reminded me of real life storm chasers that follow twisters - crazy, brave people that get right in there with the storm. Locke's crew was well developed and I loved each of them - except maybe Sly. I only wish we could have seen more of them interacting with Roar individually, other than mainly Duke, Locke, and Jinx. As for Cassius, I'm not sure that I saw him as a villain really. I almost kind of wished he would have been sincere and could have built a life with Roar, but it wasn't meant to be. It was great being able to see things in his perspective though, as well as in Novaya, Roar, and Locke's perspectives - and the mysterious Stormlord. Overall, I loved Roar. This book is well rounded, with romance for the people like me that can't live without it and plenty of action, adventure, and magic to please all fantasy lovers. Our seemingly unmagical heroine, Aurora, reminded me of Anna in Rosalyn Eves's Blood Rose Rebellion and the savage Stormlord gives hint toward Sarah J. Maas's Erawan in the Throne of Glass series and I can't wait to watch this series continue to take shape, to see what challenges wait for Aurora upon her return to Pavan and how learning who she truly is will affect the way that the hunters see her.

I can’t wait for everyone in the world to read this book. It takes a lot these days for a young adult book to wow me. They used to be all I read, but as I've gotten older, my tastes have changed, and now I am much more choosy about the YA books I spend my time with. ROAR was sort of an easy choice. I mean, Cora Carmack wrote it. I've read everything else she's written, and sure - none of it is YA. But, all of it has been incredible. But, I have to say... NONE of it has been as incredible as Roar. Cora has knit together this epic, sprawling fantasy about a world ravaged by sentient storms and a race of special people - the Stormlings - who are the only ones that can defeat them. As if that awesome concept wasn't enough, she went ahead and added a knee-weakening, swoon-worthy romance to sweeten the pot. Storms in this world have hearts in the form of beautiful stones. The storms destroy and kill, so society has elevated Stormlings to royalty and positions of high power since they are the ones to reach inside storms, take their hearts and cause them to dissipate. The stormhearts are their treasure to keep. Aurora Pavan is heir to the throne and is supposed to be a powerful Stormling. But, she's not. She has no power. No magic. And no one can know. She runs away on the eve of her marriage to a fellow Stormling (Cassius, who is hard to figure out. Is he good? Is he bad? That is still to be determined...), and joins up with a band of storm chasers. This group of misfits is also able to defeat storms, and Aurora is determined to learn from them how to do it. She wouldn't mind private lessons from Locke, a storm chaser who has a soft heart when it comes to her. But, she has to keep her identity a secret. Aurora's time with the storm chasers is amazing in so many ways. I loved watching her come into her own. She started out so timid and afraid of everything. But, getting to know all the members of her new quasi-family - and especially Locke - gave her perspective she didn't have before as princess. It's hard to tell which one I loved more - Aurora or Locke. Locke is a swashbuckling roguish guy who is handsome and charming and so smart. He's just what Aurora needs to teach her about herself and about her world. And although they fight and fight their attraction to each other, it eventually spills over, and that's where Cora Carmack's special hand at romance comes into play. Roar is an amazing beginning to what I'm sure will be an incredibly sweeping story. There are revelations in Roar that will surprise you. Times you will want to cry. Other times you will cheer out loud. And there is the introduction of a villain that sounds like will be a crazy bad guy. I can't wait for everyone to read this book.

An Amazing Read!!!. Roar was my first Cora Cormack read and I was blow away by her imagination with this fantasy read. It left me ready for, what I hope, turns into many more installments in this amazing series. Aurora is our young royal heroine who, at just 18, is thrust into an arranged marriage with another royal family in the hopes that the storms that wreak havoc on their lands with be controllable. However, once she finds her betrothed in a situation that leaves her questioning his intentions she makes a decision that sends her, and by extension the reader, on a journey of emotion, self discovery and adventure. And for us romance fans, there is plenty of that too! Fantasy novels are not usually my go to but I do enjoy them. And when I find a good one I’m always ready for more as soon as it’s done. Even though I wouldn’t call the ending a cliffhanger, it definitely left you wanting more and I can say that I am truly ready for more myself! *Arc generously provided for honest review
