The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo Book Summary

The New York Times Bestseller and A Reese’s Book Club Pick

“This love story between Lucy & Gabe spans decades and continents as two star-crossed lovers try to return to each other…Will they ever meet again? This book kept me up at night, turning the pages to find out, and the ending did not disappoint.”—Reese Witherspoon

“One Day meets Me Before You meets your weekender bag.”—The Skimm

“Extraordinary.”—Emily Giffin

He was the first person to inspire her, to move her, to truly understand her. Was he meant to be the last?

Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story—their story—at the very beginning.

Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together, they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated—perhaps they'll find life's meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other's hearts.

This devastatingly romantic debut novel about the enduring power of first love, with a shocking, unforgettable ending, is Love Story for a new generation.

“It's the epic love story of 2017.”—Redbook

Personally relatable, could be categorized as non-fiction. I recommend it for someone who is trying to move-on from a break-up of a long-term relationship (only when you feel stabIe). I really enjoyed the journal-concept of the book, makes it light-reading without reducing the emotions in it. The content (e.g. reasons for Lucy and Gabe’s separation, Lucy giving Darren a chance, Lucy and Darren together) is very real. I totally understood her point of view and the way she thinks. I was really heart-broken on what happened at the end, but Lucy’s internal thoughts are really satisfying.

Heartbreaking and thought-provoking. The book was an amazing story about love, personal hopes and dreams, and truly prompted you to think about what you want out of your life and relationships. She did a great job at immersing the reader into the story and taking us along their journey.

The Light We Lost. Oh my God, girl. You just killed me. I could NOT put this down. I cried, laughed, cried again and again. I had a love like this, only he didn’t die, he found out he was gay, just a little too late for my heart. Keep on doing what you’re doing. We will all enjoy your labor. Thank you. Jd.

A tearjerker or.... This book was touching in some ways then it was like a repetitive roller coaster. Lucy to me was a whiner just as much as Gabe was. I couldn’t really feel that there was any love-at-first sight after 9/11 which I don’t know if that was to be the strongest crossover to start off their romance...eh not so great. It was good; the outline of this story was sad, could’ve been more. Yes 100%!!! Am I still after a month of two p/o at the end. YES!!!

Beautiful. Someone I know recommended this book to me and I was a bit weary about reading it because it had such mixed reviews on here. After reading it, I’ve decided that every negative review is wrong. This book is beautiful. It’s absolutely heartbreaking but it is beautiful. It wasn’t the most eventful read but that’s why it was realistic. I know some other people said that Lucy was annoying and couldn’t move on, but that’s the point. To show how she was affected by the epic love. And the addition of 9/11 was not irrelevant. It was basically the backbone of the story and whoever wrote that obviously was not paying attention. This book broke my heart. I know that there isn’t much of an ending, but I liked it nevertheless. I will always want to know exactly what happened with Darren but the point of the book was about Lucy’s story with Gabe, not just Lucy so it needed to end there. Once I finished, I went back to the prologue and reread it in order to make it make more sense. I recommend doing this. It broke my heart all over again. I can only hope that one day I can feel a fraction of what Lucy felt for Gabe. Do yourself a favor, ignore the negative reviews and read this book.

Read in 6 hours. Beautiful story. Bawling my eyes out. Started it and finished in one day/6 hours.

One of the worst books I’ve ever read. Loved Big Little Lies so I thought I’d give another Reese book club book a shot. Hated this with a passion. The main characters are TERRIBLE people. The 9/11 tie-in feels like it was shoehorned in. If you take it out, nothing changes. It’s still a “love story” about two horrible, selfish people. They just don’t have the “we experienced 9/11 together” part as a reason for them to continue to be in each other’s lives. It feels so disrespectful to 9/11 victims and survivors and first responders. Stay away from this. It’s awful!

oh my gosh. i have never related to a book so much. the emotion i felt reading this can not be put into words. love is never cut and dry.

An okay read to get yourself lost in. I love cheesy romance novels but this one read like a ridiculous soap opera half the time. The girl is basically hung up on her ex and spends the whole book moping about him. It was fun to read for the passionate romance but other than that it was hard to relate to any of the characters especially Lucy, as it felt like there was no depth to her and frankly, she was really immature. Cmon girl, deal with your feelings and truly move on before you get involved and start a family with a new man.

Amazing. Could not put it down. This book touched every emotion I’ve ever experienced in my life. Loved it from start to finish.

Couldn’t put it down. Read this book in one day. Heart wrenching story on so many levels and so relatable in just as many ways - feeling torn between the life and love you have and the life and love you might have had. Highly recommend!

Very moving. This story brought to life some of my most personal thoughts. I felt apart of the love story. Very moving story.

I just can’t read anymore. I kept waiting for the story to began. I made it through some of the chapters but it was way too boring!!

heart breaking. The reviews made me iffy to read it at first but I’m glad I did, I was hooked from the first page. It was absolutely heartbreaking but worth the read

Amazing!!!!. This book is so good! Such a real story of dealing with life and love.

Emotional. Daring. Brave.. The first word coming to my mind to describe this book was ‘wow’. I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put it down. The words held such meaning that I could truly feel the emotions on the page reach my heart. There was something so special about this book that I know it’ll be one of my favorites for a long time to come.

Where is the ending?. Did the author die? It just stops.....

Easy read, but end was disappointing. I read this in a day, and it’s a cute romance. I just felt like the plot line was a tad bit predictable, and overall felt very rushed. I could feel what was coming and then at the climax there’s was only a few pages left to wrap everything together. I was left feeling dissatisfied.

Love it!. ❤️❤️❤️

Love Love Love. This book reminded me of my fiancé and I’s story. We met in Brooklyn right out of high school, the fire, the love we have for one another! I just felt SO connected to the characters. I couldn’t stop reading, I wish there were a part 2! 10/10 recommend :)

Wow. Spoilers.. SO DO NOT READ ON!!!! knew in the first few chapters I was into it when reading the sample. However, knowing the writing was a person speaking to someone not answering it gave a since of what was to come. I feel so much from this book. The description of their love is that of what i have felt with someone else, and we have been in and out of each other’s lives for so long... it’s hard to pull away when all you wanna do is remain lost in it. I like that in the end she wrote the letter stating the truth. I just wish that after the letter there was some sort of knowing what happened with her and Darren. The book was good, so I gave it 4 starts. Not five because of the death factor.

The Light We Lost. Loved it. I completely submerged in this story. Characters were poignant and very memorable. Story was different and yet very credible. A beautifully written novel. Highly recommend.

Touching. I could hardly stop reading this book and thought about the characters when I wasn’t reading it.

absolutely worth it. Fell in love with the characters and the storyline and especially the way it’s written. The author did an amazing job!

The light we lost. Great writing! Very moving book. I loved it!

Couldn’t get over selfish Lucy. I finished this book but it was difficult to do so. Gabe was a real jerk who never put Lucy first. She had this obnoxious fascination with him. She married an amazing man who put her first. How does she respond? By cheating and harboring all this resentment. She didn’t deserve someone like Darren. She was never over Gabe. I don’t find anything enduring or relatable about her. I think she is a selfish miserable jellyfish.

Captivating. This book was beautiful! I was captivated from the start, a beautiful love story that is also heartbreaking at the same time. A fast paced easy read, I finished this in less than two days. Truly a beautiful story, I would definitely recommend!

It's really terrible.... I tried, I really tried to get through it but it was just unbearable. The main character is just awful. I disliked her immediately. I despise how she constantly talked internally to Gabe throughout the story. The character development and backstory is so weak and flimsy. It reads like a tacky romance novel..... Ugh

Liked it!. Wasn’t my favorite but it was sweet. The ending had me in literal sobbing tears but I expected… more? More of what? I don’t know… just more.

Wow. This is an incredible book. It touched me personally I’m so many ways and aspects. Truly a great read.

Hard to read full of anxiety. Then ending should have been chapter 1.

Morbidly depressing. I had such high hopes for this book... it took morbid tun after depressing turn.

Heartbreaking.. This book is one of those that makes you feel. The emotions that it brings forth can almost be painful but it’s such a beautiful story. I fell in love with the characters and I love how the author brought forth their story.

I loved this one. Sincere and well crafted

Touching. A touching story that is well written.

Starts slow... give it a chance. This book took awhile for me to “get into”... being on Reese’s book club list powered through and am glad I did.

Amazing!!. I read this book in one day!! I couldn’t put it down, such a great read.

Wow. Amazing story very well written.

So many feels. This book gave me all the feels, I couldn’t put it down. Beautiful yet gut wrenching. I’ll probably be thinking about this book & the characters for a good amount of time afterwards.

Disappointing. I was really disappointed in this book, based on the reviews and being one of Reece’s picks I had high hopes. It was hard for me to get into and I’m surprised I finished it. I love a good romance but this was was boring.

Hooked from the start. Amazing writing and story. Not your typical romance story that made it all the more lovely and heartbreaking.

Loved it. The characters were flawed as people in life are but the book engrossed me ad I’m looking forward to her next, Definite tearjerker although I figured out quickly what would happen.

Overdone, overly dramatic, and tacky. I thought I would enjoy this book, as I am a Columbia grad myself and love a good romance, but this let me down big time. Right off the bat, the inclusion of 9/11 in the first chapter was disrespectful and was not necessary for the plot. The main character is extremely annoying and overly dramatic. My least favorite thing about this book was the author’s writing style. The narrator mentions every move during dialogue, which is distracting and annoying. I have no idea how the author got this published. Don’t waste your time.

Great book. I loved this book. So relatable and classic

Well written but a bit of a turn off. It’s not that I didn’t like the book, I just really couldn’t stand the main character. A wealthy white woman who lives a life of privilege obsessed over the one thing she can’t have. I mean, I get the idea but to be honest I felt more for Gabe and Darren than for Lucy. Also, the ending wasn’t very satisfying.

The Light We Lost. Wow! What a powerful, moving story! Truly remarkable and very gripping! I think I experienced every possible emotion while reading this! This is one novel that will stay with me forever!

Outstanding. Such a lovely and heartwarming story. Everyone should have this kind of love in their lifetime.

Underwhelming. This book was terribly underwhelming. It seemed to drag on and on and nothing happened.

Slow. Half way through this and it’s boring, I’m skipping pages and then I Just gave up.

Heart wrenching romance. I can’t begin to describe how overwhelmed with emotion I felt with each page in this intense story of passion and life. The author did an incredible job making the characters so real that I feel like I know Lucy, Gabe, and Daren personally. I feel so much for this book and hope that whoever is considering whether or not to read it, does.
