Blood, Sweat, and Pixels by Jason Schreier Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

“The stories in this book make for a fascinating and remarkably complete pantheon of just about every common despair and every joy related to game development.” — Rami Ismail, cofounder of Vlambeer and developer of Nuclear Throne

Developing video games—hero's journey or fool's errand? The creative and technical logistics that go into building today's hottest games can be more harrowing and complex than the games themselves, often seeming like an endless maze or a bottomless abyss. In Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, Jason Schreier takes readers on a fascinating odyssey behind the scenes of video game development, where the creator may be a team of 600 overworked underdogs or a solitary geek genius. Exploring the artistic challenges, technical impossibilities, marketplace demands, and Donkey Kong-sized monkey wrenches thrown into the works by corporate, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels reveals how bringing any game to completion is more than Sisyphean—it's nothing short of miraculous.

Taking some of the most popular, bestselling recent games, Schreier immerses readers in the hellfire of the development process, whether it's RPG studio Bioware's challenge to beat an impossible schedule and overcome countless technical nightmares to build Dragon Age: Inquisition; indie developer Eric Barone's single-handed efforts to grow country-life RPG Stardew Valley from one man's vision into a multi-million-dollar franchise; or Bungie spinning out from their corporate overlords at Microsoft to create Destiny, a brand new universe that they hoped would become as iconic as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings—even as it nearly ripped their studio apart.

Documenting the round-the-clock crunches, buggy-eyed burnout, and last-minute saves, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels is a journey through development hell—and ultimately a tribute to the dedicated diehards and unsung heroes who scale mountains of obstacles in their quests to create the best games imaginable.

Awesome, insightful book. I went in with the expectation to learn some details about game development. There was that and so much more. To hear all these details and behind the scenes struggles about some of my favorite games puts things into perspective. Thanks for taking the time to tell these stories Jason!

perfect story. very amazing book with amazing stories

Really great insight into the Game Dev world.. The book gives us a really great insight into the world of game development. With a look into the stories of great games like Uncharted 4, Witcher 3, and Stardew Valley. Jason is a great writer and if you enjoy his writing style and the investigative reporting he's done for Kotaku you should totally pick this up. Even if you aren't familiar with Jason's work but are interested in game development, or video games in general, pick this one up! And maybe check out his articles. You won't be disappointed.

Great Recommendation.. Wonderful Read. Factual and relatable stories.

Fantastic!. Great insights into how great games are made and the struggle to combine technology and the arts! Thank you

Thank you for your book.. I throughly enjoyed reading each story presented here, which is tightly focused on the concept of the "crunch" that game developers seem to have to take, amongst a wake that of other struggles, in order to give us gamers the greatness that we take for granted. I've always tried to take the developer's side when folks get upset, and now I have the proof that developers do not want to just grab your cash or purposely spoil your day. This is hard work and sacrifice. And a lot of times things just do not work out as expected. And of course it looks obvious after the fact.

Best book ever. Its not even out yet but I can already hear the splitscreen jazz solo kick in with every chapter. If this book is 10% as good as his recent andromeda expose, than its a better book then we deserve.

Good but repetitive. This book offers a good insiders view of the development of some recentish blockbuster games and if you enjoy this authors Kotaku articles, you will enjoy this book. The only downside is that a lot of the stories are repetitive in that everything comes down to crunch work. Some more variation in the selection of stories for the book would have made a better book.

Awesome! Buy it.. This is an informative, exhaustingly researched and hugely entertaining book about the triumphs, tribulations and tragedies involved in developing videogames.

Highly informing and entertaining. I went into Blood Sweat, and Pixels expecting a collection of well researched stories on the triumphs and pitfalls of game development. I’m happy to report that Jason has delivered exactly that. This is a book both those deeply entrenched in the industry as well as the casual observer will find engaging and informative. Highly recommended.

Alert!! Do not buy it!. Waste of time and money

A wonderful peak behind OZ’s Curtain. Having grown up into what I’m told is Adulthood (I’m closer to 40 than 30) playing games, this was a fascinating insight for me. Jason has done a wonderful job telling the untold stories, and the stories only know in rumours online. For anyone who enjoys games, lives them as a hobby, or simple loves the behind the scenes take on industry this book will not disappoint.
