Every Last Lie by Mary Kubica Book Summary

New York Times bestselling author of THE GOOD GIRL Mary Kubica is back with another exhilarating thriller as a widow’s pursuit of the truth leads her to the darkest corners of the psyche.

Clara Solberg’s world shatters when her husband and their four-year-old daughter are in a car crash, killing Nick while Maisie is remarkably unharmed. The crash is ruled an accident…until the coming days, when Maisie starts having night terrors that make Clara question what really happened on that fateful afternoon.

Tormented by grief and her obsession that Nick’s death was far more than just an accident, Clara is plunged into a desperate hunt for the truth. Who would have wanted Nick dead? And, more important, why? Clara will stop at nothing to find out—and the truth is only the beginning of this twisted tale of secrets and deceit.

Told in the alternating perspectives of Clara’s investigation and Nick’s last months leading up to the crash, master of suspense Mary Kubica weaves her most chilling thriller to date—one that explores the dark recesses of a mind plagued by grief and shows that some secrets might be better left buried.

Good. I rarely write a review in lieu of just a rating. I liked this book but I didn’t love it. I think this was partly due to the fact that I found the main character very hard to like. She did things that I found very hard to agree with and looked at things from a very close minded point of view. Also I thought that it was rather slow. No big cliff hangers or unexpected turns. All in all I don’t feel that it was a waste of time. But I also wouldn’t read it again. I’ve read other books from this author that I’ve enjoyed immensely. Please don’t let this one put you off where the others are concerned.

Every Last Lie. Loved it

Favorite Author. This is one of my favorite authors and I look forward to reading her books...this book was good, but it was depressing and it kept me in a depressive state while reading. If you can get through the weight of it, then it’s a good story, but a sad one.

Loved this 5star book!!. Loved this book!! Idk why it has received all of these drawn out Bad reviews because I found it hard to put down. It completely kept my interest piqued and was an intriguing read

A disappointment. Typical of the a lot of writers today. Too much fluffy detail about the character, and not enough depth in the story .

Don't waste your time. This started out good but got to be ridiculous. 2 stars is a stretch. Too many possibilities of non killer.

Every Last Lie. Very wordy and too much detail

Disappointed. Long drawn out read. I skipped so much hoping it was going to get better but ugh, it did not. SO boring! Don’t waste your time.

Redundant. I felt like I was reading the same chapter over and over again

Okay.... I had such high hopes for this book, because I really enjoyed “The Good Girl”. I thought the book was hard to get into and the ending ended up being pretty anti-climactic. It was sweet, when I expected it to be more of a thriller.

Every Last Lie. Disappointing, jumbled had to make myself finish this book. Don’t waste your time or money on this book.

Messy. I really enjoyed other books by this author and was eager to download this book. The plot seems very scattered and Clara, the main voice of the book is annoying at best. I understand that she was functioning through grief but I just couldn't stay interested in all of the many, many, potential different people and reasons for her husband's death. It felt like the author couldn't figure out who would be the "murderer", so she just came up with all of these different options and her editors thought it was a good idea to throw them all at the wall to see what would stick. The final reveal...figured that out well before the last few chapters and sped through the last ridiculous attempt to blame the Izzy character so that I can move on from this totally unbelievable fiasco of a story.

Finding closure...from every secret and lie. In Every Last Lie, Clara was dealing with the loss of her husband Nick. The story gradually reveals secrets and lies untold to Clara. Clara’s world was slowly crumbling. Unable to sustain the problems that continued to plague her daily routine she succumbs to denial. Clara was a widow with a five day old baby and a four year old. Mary used alternating points of view. Nick’s voice was issued via past references leading up to the accident. Nick’s point of view helped set the tone for the sequence of events that took place. Clara’s point of view plagued the readers mind with doubts about Nick’s character using all the secrets and lies as a means against him. There’s a common theme in Mary Kubica’s books: she has a multitude of distractions taking place that overshadows the main storyline. It’s a tactic used to confuse the reader trying to create mystery using other characters actions and behaviors as a deterrent from the source of the problem. What I find is it’s useless information that I sort through in search of the real facts and clues. In all her books I love the concept, but in each I get bored with the execution. These layers delay the crime solving factors. I hate that all the answers get revealed during the last chapter. Each time I feel the answers are anticlimactic all this build up for nothing. This book was referenced a psychological suspense. Psychological means to affect the emotional state of mind of a character. Clara’s character was affected emotionally by the death of her husband. Suspense means to be excited about the unexpected events. Nick’s character certainly had some unexpected secrets for Clara to deal with as a widow and caregiver to two children. This story is a perfect example of why it’s important to communicate openly and honestly to your spouse/partner so if something happens to one of you you are well informed. Instead, of misinformed like Clara who speculates every new piece of information with a negative behavioral action about her husband Nick. Mary plants seeds of doubt and questionability in the readers mind so your constantly thrown off course. I enjoyed all the plausible reasons of doubt, yet I felt the mystery was more for Clara’s characters perspective not the readers.

What was the point?. No mystery. No suspense. Just a woman who acts irrationally. And she’s unlikable. Couldn’t relate to anyone here. The story meanders and never seems to have a point. Hard to finish.
