Year One Book Summary

A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

Year One - Nora Roberts Book Reviews

  • Lana, Max and Fallon (dragonladi1)

I have never read too many books from this author, but this one sounded so good. Ms Roberts took the time to built and develop a story, from the start to where Fallon is born. How a simple virus could spread and the aftermath. The characters meet and later connect again. I am not into sweet mushy books, this has some brief romance, but I felt it was about after a major event where survivors do to survive. There is people who is good and evil in this book, how evil tries to eliminate those who are different, even though they are not evil. But I enjoyed this book, great characters development and world building. Great book. Thank you. Going to start book 2 now.
  • Year One (Ann MH)

Loved this very different thriller from Nora Roberts
  • Nora Rising (ScorchQueen)

From a young age, I have read many a Nora Roberts book. Despite the multitude that she has out there, the books never seize to capture my attention and plunge me so whole-heartedly into her fantastical web. However, this book, exceeds the mere expectation of a good read. Well-written as usual, it’s different from her other works because it doesn’t follow her usual pattern of happy endings...I believe it will prove to have one with the conclusion of the third book, but with many sacrifices of the characters we’ve grown to love. They feel just as real to me as my next door neighbor. Thank you Nora Roberts, for surpassing your well-known witchcraft and giving us “Year One.” Also, I’m pretty sure Nora Roberts is immortal...she never ages :D
  • Absolutely amazing (TaylorKWest)

I only ever read when I’m on vacation because I feel it’s the only time I can dive into a book without my internal alarm telling me I have better things to do. However, I started and finished this book in two days, using whatever free time I had, without guilt. It gave me hope there are books out there that still do that! Loved this adventure and have already bought the second to this series. Can’t wait for the third in November!
  • Skip this book for the second one, Of Blood and Bone. (BluesHarpist)

My rating system: 5 stars are reserved for books that totally blow me away. I don’t give too many of these out, since it is almost like giving the book a 100%. It is nearly impossible to write a truly perfect book. 4 stars for books that I would recommend to just about anyone, or, at least, to someone who doesn’t dislike the genre. 3 stars for books that I would only recommend to someone with a strong interest in the particular genre. 2 stars for books that I would be hesitant to recommend to anyone at all, but the book was not a total disaster. 1 star for books that were so terrible or ridiculous for me that I wish I had not wasted time on reading it to begin with.
  • Year One (nutsp2190)

Do not waste your time on this offering. Very disappointed in Nora Roberts - not up to her usual excellence
  • Best book (Monopoly game not working)

This is the best book I’ve read in years! I can’t wait to finish the trilogy!
  • Book 1 (RDrachen)

Feels like a twist on Walking Dead. Magic is the twist, but seems to follow the same idea. Curious what changes as the books go on.
  • Year one (lynnepapa)

Stopped when she made the policeman( a man) gay . Chapter one .. really????
  • Year One (jenMHM10)

    Loved it! Highly recommend.

  • The Doom, The Doom! (Kiarra Monique)

The Doom, The Doom! This story was sooo good. I enjoyed following multiple sets of characters for a while, then seeing them all come together. If I had to pick a favorite set of characters, it would hands down be Rachel and Jonah. The ending left me wanting more, so I'm chomping at the bit for book two, which comes out next year!
  • Best apocalyptic story line ever (Rgzkhan)

    Couldn’t put it down.
  • Year one (Rac queen)

Worst book I’ve ever bought by Nora Roberts very disappointed
  • Phenomenal! (Dan'sJuliet)

Love, terror, horror, magicks- such a fantastic tale told as only Nora Roberts can. I’m ready for year two!
  • Couldn’t put it down (Adczjhlgh)

Absolutely loved reading it, had a hard time putting it down. Already impatiently waiting for the next one!
  • Just... wow! (Abrima)

I have always been a fan of Nora Roberts. “Year One” is definitely off the genre she normally writes, although the elements in some of her other novels are there - magic, and people coming together to fight against an evil - but yet, it is also as unlike her other books. If you are looking for another romance, this is not it. Although I enjoy those books, I recommend reading this one. A virus is spread, threatening the world’s population. For those that are “immune,” they find themselves in danger, being hunted. Some develop “abilities,” which targets them even more. And others still, letting their newfound powers lead them into the dark and evil. I will not give away the story, but I was very much impressed with it! Nora Roberts has proven herself capable of extending to another genre. It was a very compelling read - I hated having to put it down! I know this book has just been released, but I am (patiently?) awaiting the next one!
  • Amazing (bigdaddy37)

First NR book and couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait for the next
  • Good Read (caren296)

The book is quite different from what one expects from Nora Roberts. This book has been compared to Stephen King's 'The Stand'. Comparatively, the book is somewhat similar yet distinctly different from King's book, attributed to the introduction of "magick", which was fascinating and interesting. Essentially, the book is a real page turner and I look forward to the next in the series. Ms Roberts has another winner on her hands.
  • Terrible (MrsNMDK) disappointed. What a waste of money.
  • Get "The Stand" by Stephen King instead (Perthcatlady)

This book is a poor attempt to rewrite "The Stand" by Stephen King. It had a chance to be a good story...then the writer started throwing in all of this impossible phenomena that made the whole thing ridiculous and unbelievable.
