The Cuban Affair by Nelson DeMille Book Summary

Nelson DeMille’s #1 New York Times bestseller, “an action-packed, relentlessly paced thriller” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), featuring DeMille’s newest character—U.S. Army combat veteran Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, a charter boat captain setting sail on his most dangerous cruise yet.

Daniel Graham MacCormick—Mac for short—seems to have a pretty good life. At age thirty-five he’s living in Key West, owner of a forty-two-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the Army as an infantry officer with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don’t tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac’s finances are more than a little shaky.

One day, Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life, and waiting for Carlos, a hotshot Miami lawyer heavily involved with anti-Castro groups. Carlos wants to hire Mac for a ten-day fishing tournament to Cuba at the standard rate, but Mac suspects there is more to this and turns it down. The price then goes up to two million dollars, and Mac agrees to hear the deal, and meet Carlos’ clients—a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Sara Ortega, and a mysterious older Cuban exile, Eduardo Valazquez.

Mac learns that there is sixty million American dollars hidden in Cuba by Sara’s grandfather when he fled Castro’s revolution. With the “Cuban Thaw” underway between Havana and Washington, Carlos, Eduardo, and Sara know it’s only a matter of time before someone finds the stash—by accident or on purpose. And Mac knows if he accepts this job, he’ll walk away rich…or not at all.

The Cuban Affair “is a timely stay-up-all-night, nail-biting page-turner featuring Nelson DeMille’s iconic tongue-in-cheek, articulate, rhythmic narrative. His affably irreverent protagonist, fantastic believable supporting characters, and tense, realistic Cuba-set scenes including some jaw-dropping revelations make this a must read” (Library Journal, starred review).

“Genuinely gripping” (Newsday), told with “incredible wit” (Tampa Bay Times), “The Cuban Affair feels authentic and real, and it provides knuckle-white tension mixed in with levity” (Associated Press).

Terrific. Fast moving, exciting, funny and a little bit of everything. A quick enjoyable read

Good but not great........ I thought it started out painfully slowly but got some decent momentum in the end. I enjoyed a couple of his other books much more than this.

The Cuban Affair. This is a good read, it was exciting with a humorous side. I will recommend this book.

Great book!. I’m a huge fan of Mr. DeMille’s work, and I very much enjoyed this book. The main character had a touch of John Corey in him, which were some of my favorite DeMille novels. Well done! What’s next!?

Not terrible, but not great either. Really drags it out... hard to remain engaged... 150 pages of basically just wandering around gets a little tedious... a number of lazy plot points...

I really wanted to like this book. Loved plum island and the John Corey novels. I was just waiting the whole time for something to happen but nope. On multiple occasions I turned to speed reading to move it along.

John Corey lite. Since I like Nelson DeMille’s books I didn’t mind the lead character Daniel “Mac” MacCormick being similar to John Corey. If there’s an abridged version I’d recommend purchasing that over the unabridged version. It’s no Plum Island, wordy, not DeMille’s best but I enjoyed the read.

The Cuban Affair. Totally enjoyable! What a story teller Mr. DeMille is! I think I've read all of his books( I'm 78 and can't be absolutely certain about anything😊) Charm School is still my favorite !

Baffling. What started out as an interesting premise became a slow moving and I do mean slow moving story void of any attention grabbing moments. Every day of the story from Breakfast to supper, to bed time is in exacting detail. We are not talking about drama filled events, we talking about strolling down a city street looking at T-Shirts and of course what kind of exact drink they were having. There must be a quiz on regarding that later. I’m guessing 1000+ words dedicated to solely the drink being consumed and/or ordered. Truthfully there is a beginning -and ending to this book with not much in between. I don’t think the ending could have been more disappointing than it was. If it was to lure you back for another adventure you can count me out. Ranger 1 out.

Another winner!. Relatable characters, accurate locations, well captured vibes, along with a provocative and captivating story written in that perfect DeMille style. This is one affair you can tell everyone about!

Always awesome. Gripping read. The character’s banter was so believable. Story kept you turning page after page.

Not his best work.. Rambling and repetitive with a foolish story that makes little sense. Don’t bother.

I'm f t you. Right r attention Ezekiel'se well s — e

Get it. It’s good

Couldn’t wait til I got to the last page. The plot certainly had a lot of potential and was well researched. When the story should have been climaxing, it started a long and painful slide til it finally fizzled out. A few attempts to rekindle were made with wet matches. Boring

John Corey meets the Gold Coast.. Well done.

The Cuban Affair. The book is OUTSTANDING. The book keeps the reader on edge. It is funny, ala Jack Corey, and suspenseful. The reader also gets a good history lesson on Cuba. Highly recommend this book.

The Cuban Affair. Did Nelson DeMille really write this book? If he did he should be ashamed. The plot is weak and the story just draaags along. The protagonist, Dan MacCormick is a retired Army Captain who runs a charter fishing boat in Key West. The Dan MacCormick in DeMillle's book is a smart aleck, who makes trite, banal jokes and thinks about sex all the time. He reminds you of the nerd in high school who was the class clown that no one liked. The other characters are no better. I've read most of DeMille's books and this ranks at the bottom.

Good, but not great!. I enjoyed this book, but it let we wanting. I really wish DeMille would bring back John Corey. I get it that as an author he probably gets bored writing sequel after sequel with the same main character, but in Corey he has a winning recipe. This new character definitely has some Corey in him, but of course that’s DeMille alter ego coming out. Bottomline, this book was good, not great, but still very much worth my money and my time.

Disappointing. I've read every book up to this one with delight. The Cuban Affair was a great disappointment. Needs editing. Way too long with padding that was obvious and distracting. Relationship between the hero and female protagonist seems contrived. Well, can't get them all right.

VERY GOOD, BUT COULD BE BETTER. I am a fan of De Mille, and thebook was very enjoyable, but it seems clear to me that the story lack the appropriate flow: a lot happens in the beginning, and then the end is kind of rushed. Also, the main character alternates between extreme naiveness and incredible smarts, in the span of few pages.

Bill. It went nowhere. I love Nelson but this book is a waste of time and money.

Cuban Affair. Loved this book. Should be a must read for all those with a favorable view of communist Cuba! Nothing PC to annoy the reader in this book!

The Cuban Affair. Enjoyed the book greatly. Action, humor and history together. Hope to see Mac continue as a character.

Self-indulgent. T

Not one of the best. Started out good then stayed linear and predictable Needed complexity

Disappointed. I have long been an avid reader of Nelson DeMille, but I confess that, for the first time ever, I'm disappointed. This story is so relentlessly macho, testosterone-fueled, that it bored me.

Cuba Debacle. Nelson must have needed fast cash for an expansion of house on Long Island. This book is the worst thing he has ever written and I am a fan! I just kept waiting for the story to unfold in some unexpected way with a plot twist or two, never happens. Instead John Corey becomes a fisherman, meets an attractive Cuban girl, fill in the blank. Don’t bother wasting time or money!

The Cuban Affair. Loved this book. Mr. Demille has rolled back the calendar and crafted a rollicking good novel full of his trademark wit and sarcasm, adventure and spy craft, while shining a bright light on the corruption and suppression that still exists in Cuba.

Worst in years. Plodding through this travelogue on Cuba brought to mind the Bataan Death March. The last chapter was ok but the climax was a copout.

The Cuban Affair. Great read . My first book by this author and loved it !

He's Back!!. Nelson DeMille is back in his best form!! New characters, fun edge-of-your-seat plot, and his indispensable, irreverent, not-for-the-politically-correct humor. Buy it, read it, enjoy.

AWESOME!. i’m a big fan of nelson demille

The Cuban Affair. Pretty hokey, beer grade.

Terrrrrible!!!!. This was a very very disappointing coming from Nelson DeMille. The constant, supposed, humor between The two main characters was boring and childish. One of the worst books I've ever purchased

The Cuban Affair. Always be prepared with a DeMille book...easy to pick up, almost impossible to put down. A fantastic read, packed with sarcastic wit.

The Cuban Affair. Pretty darn good read!!!

The Cuban affair. Good book. Some what disappointed they didn’t get to the cave.

Cuban affear. Can I have my $14.95 back. Doesn’t deserve one star rather, really. What a boring, dull book it is?! Endless talk about nothing between two main characters. Oh brother, I am so disappointed! Far cry from your previous book Mister. Waist of money. Again , can I get it back??

The Cuban Affair. I am generally a DeMille fan having read and enjoyed most of his books. The Cuban Affair was a major disappointment. The writing was slapdash and the breezy banter pervading the book came across as the wisecracking of a teenager. The story was trivial, the action trite. I hope that Nelson DeMille returns to his prior form if he ever writes another novel.

The Cuban affair. Terrible

Very Enjoyable. True to most of his novels, solid story that is well told. Bit predictable though with character traits well exploited from prior novels.

just plain bad. the story was predictable, the writing average but the characters were just juvenile fantasies.

The Cuban Affair. Another superb effort by De Mille.

Boring and slow pace. The only eventful part was at the end, I had to skim a lot of these book because of the meaningless details it had just to get to the point.
