The House of Closed Doors by Jane Steen. I throughly enjoyed the very strong female protagonist Nell who became stronger yet more compassionate with struggles that were common during the Victorian time period she lived in. A stellar group of characters in this book created a wonderful experience and seem very familiar to the reader as they work together to solve mysteries but most importantly find a special bond with each other. Loved It. This book drew me in and kept me turning the pages. I loved every minute enveloped in the story, and can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Not What I Expected But Not Bad At All.. I enjoyed the story very much but it was not the murder-mystery I was hoping for at all. Very well written but a bit too tame for my tastes.

Great. Its a great book, i loved it.

Great Read. Page turner…I am usually not into Historical Fiction, but I really enjoyed this. Nell was the perfect YA, navigating unexpected motherhood with grace and dignity despite the circumstances she was forced into. Nell refuses to marry or disclose the father of the child. The friends she makes while away from her family help shape her independence. Her family and extended family teach her and try her patience, and one member nearly kills her and her child. An easy thrilling read.

Do not pass up this one!. Excellent! Story line grabs you and you cannot put down. Climax and ending were both well written and leaves you absorbed in the story line.

Refreshing Period Piece. Steen does a good job of navigating her characters though the post-CIvil War era where a young girl is given so little information about sexuality that she believes nothing drastic will happen if you are not lying down. She is, of course, wrong and finds herself with few options for her future — although she manages to keep some control as she refuses to tell the name of the father skirting the trap of marriage. She is, however, sent to a "poor farm” as an unwed mother where her views of accepted societal norms are further stretched. The characters are believable, the twists are refreshing, the historical references lend a sense of reality. I appreciate the PG quality of the writing as it means I do not have to hide it from my junior-highers. Although there are issues that demand further investigation in the next 2 books of the series, this first book comes to a satisfying conclusion that does not leave you feeling like you got gypped in the end. I look forward to reading both of the sequels.

Great read!. I am notoriously not a fan of period pieces (movies or books) and when I began reading this book, within one chapter I was hooked! This is by far the most I’ve ever enjoyed a historical themed book. The twists and turns are so well written and the emotional journey is just amazing. I am so pleasantly surprised. I am officially now a fan of this author! I will absolutely be continuing this series.

Catchy Story. I liked the story and plot of this book. However, there were too many grammatical errors and sometimes it was a little choppy in writing. I did enjoy the book!

Gripping story!. Good story of what it was like to be a unwed mother in Victorian times! The plot of our heroine grabs you and leaves you wanting more! Highly recommend!

Determined to be true to thine own self.. A tale that brings emotion. It draws you into the lives of the characters from the very beginning. It is difficult to stop reading as you need to find what comes next. A story that tells of difficult times & decisions & determination.

Excellent!. This author is phenomenal, the hard test were engaging from the first chapter. I wish it didn't end and I hope there is a sequel. Loved this book, highly recommend.

Brilliantly written. I was hooked from the beginning. I enjoyed the strength of Nell and her dedication to her friends and family. The role of a woman at this time was well written. I can’t wait to see where her journey leads.

Excellent Read!!. This a book I’d never read based on my criteria. But, I liked the synopsis. I am very impressed and glad I read it, which are understatement. The characters become real and while reading you are there. It does become a page turner. I had to find out what happened! The Victorian era fascinates me. And, Nell is quite the rebel of those times. I will be reading more this series and hope to find Jane’s ghostly series too!

Pregnancy doesn’t define a woman. I appreciated the fact that while the protagonist does get pregnant, she doesn’t let pregnancy define her. The author portrayed her as a strong, independent character very effectively.

The House of Closed Doors. I read to be educated, or entertained... this story did both very well! The characters were delightful, the "mystery" intriguing, the history interesting, and the solution believable. I had a hard time putting it down! The only bad thing is now I need to get book 2 so that I can see what happens next. Great read.

Incredibly well written. I’ve read lots of free books on Bookbub that were sadly mediocre. This book is well researched and beautifully written. No more thinking that passages clashed, grammar was poor and plots implausible. Strong characters and no gratuitous sentimentality. Finally a book here that I was desperate to finish.

The House of Closed Doors. A good, entertaining read! The story was fresh and was not predictable. Read this!

Historic. Book is well written and historic background is close to actual. This young, spirited woman, who, as the time period would admit, did not learn the where with all of what happens to a woman who gets into a situation re men/women. Nell is a stubborn young person who acts sometimes without thinking until she is compromised and must leave her home for a ‘Poor House’ which is below her station. Nell learns to become more of an adult when her child is born and also learns to stand up for herself with the help of a few wonderful people. I liked the book and will get the next in the series to see how well Nell does with her adventures of life.
