The Bishop's Pawn by Steve Berry Book Summary

The Bishop’s Pawn continues renowned New York Times top 5 bestseller Steve Berry’s Cotton Malone series with another riveting, history-based thriller.

History notes that the ugly feud between J. Edgar Hoover and Martin Luther King, Jr., marked by years of illegal surveillance and the accumulation of secret files, ended on April 4, 1968 when King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. But that may not have been the case.

Now, fifty years later, former Justice Department agent, Cotton Malone, must reckon with the truth of what really happened that fateful day in Memphis.

It all turns on an incident from eighteen years ago, when Malone, as a young Navy lawyer, is trying hard not to live up to his burgeoning reputation as a maverick. When Stephanie Nelle, a high-level Justice Department lawyer, enlists him to help with an investigation, he jumps at the opportunity. But he soon discovers that two opposing forces—the Justice Department and the FBI—are at war over a rare coin and a cadre of secret files containing explosive revelations about the King assassination, information that could ruin innocent lives and threaten the legacy of the civil rights movement’s greatest martyr.

Malone’s decision to see it through to the end--from the raucous bars of Mexico, to the clear waters of the Dry Tortugas, and ultimately into the halls of power within Washington D.C. itself--not only changes his own life, but the course of history.

Steve Berry always mines the lost riches of history--in The Bishop's Pawn he imagines a gripping, provocative thriller about an American icon.

The Bishop's Pawn. A brilliant telling of the civil rights movement revolving around the later life and death of Dr. King.

Thrilling and Beguiling. I greatly enjoyed this book and its look back at Cotton Malone and at Dr. King’s struggle and legacy. Creative, respectful and with some excellent twists and turns.

Big holes in plot. Per the book, Ray wasn’t an expert marksman and the rifle wasn’t sighted properly, the odds of him hitting any target at that range would be akin to winning Powerball. Also, if Foster was really a good guy, why, after the deed as done, did he complain about receiving a valuable coin instead of cash? Also, if the FBI wanted to keep a lid on things, it would have eventually eliminated Foster, too.

Not up to his usual writing. Hard to believe this author laid an egg, but Bishop’s Pawn was a yawner. Way too much boring detail and almost lifeless characters.

The Bishop’s Pawn. Unbelievable thesis, way too long and wordy, undeveloped characters. I found the book unsatisfying and the ending not credible. I like most of Mr. Berry’s books but he sometimes goes off the deep end and that is where this book resides, in my opinion.

Excellent..... Great Read...

The Bishop’s Pawn. I have been an admirer of Mr. Berry’s work for a long time. This is one of his best. It captured my attention and I couldn’t put it down. Great use of Cotton Malone one of my favorite heroes!

The Bishop’s Pawn. Best in the Cotton Malone series. Great read.

Not his best work. I was very disappointed in The Bishop's Pawn, it was not Berry's best work. He noted that this was his first ever attempt at writing a novel from the first person perspective. I didn't like it and don't enjoy novels written in first person. I like the author to be able to shift the perspective from different view points, and up to this novel it was something Berry had always mastered. I hope this was his last attempt at utilizing this method of writing. It was as if the novel was written by a different author entirely.

WOW!. Once again, you have given us something to consider. After reading your books I enjoy researching the places and facts you have presented. Thank you for sharing your talent of story telling once again!

Not in par with his other books. Boring and too long, not something you would read agsin

Too long. Story drags on. Only interesting portion was last few chapters. Didn’t care for any of the characters much.

Could not finish it. I rarely write reviews....this is only my second. This book was written in the first person, and I am not sure who edited it. It is hard to read, the storyline is terrible. If I was the King family, I would be disgusted at the premise of this story. If there was a way to get my money back, I would. Offensive and poorly written are the three words I would use to describe this book.

Good use of history. The author uses history well to weave a tale of FBI corruption in the mid 1960’s as it pertains to the civil rights movement. The use of a first person narrative makes the tale read like a cheap piece of pulp fiction somewhat like a 1950’s detective B movie. The author admits it is his first use of the first person narrative, so he deserves credit for that. My opinion is he should stay away from it. I also didn’t need the one sided political philosophy opinion at the end. I can get that any night on cable news. I don’t need it when reading fiction. A decent read, however.
