The High Season by Judy Blundell Book Summary

“A mesmerizing, head-spinning—and sometimes madcap-hilarious—take of have and have-nots.”—People (Book of the Week)

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY REAL SIMPLE AND KIRKUS REVIEWS • “In the smart, breezy, sweet spot between Meg Wolitzer and Elin Hilderbrand.”—Entertainment Weekly

No matter what the world throws her way, at least Ruthie Beamish has the house. Located by the sea in a quiet Long Island village, the house is her nest egg—the retirement account shared with her ex-husband, Mike, and the college fund for their teenage daughter, Jem. The catch? To afford the house, Ruthie must let it go during the best part of the year.

It’s Memorial Day weekend and the start of what Jem calls “the summer bummer”: the family’s annual exodus to make way for renters. This year, the Hamptons set has arrived. Adeline Clay is elegant and connected—and will never need to worry about money. Before long, she demonstrates an uncanny ability to help herself to Ruthie’s life. Is Adeline just being her fabulous self, or is she out to take what she wants?

When an eccentric billionaire, his wayward daughter, a coterie of social climbers, and Ruthie’s old flame are thrown into the mix, the entire town finds itself on the verge of tumultuous change. But as Ruthie loses her grasp on her job, her home, and her family, she discovers a new talent for pushing back. By the end of one unhinged, unforgettable summer, nothing will be the same—least of all Ruthie.

“Blundell knows the territory. . . . Her account of Ruthie’s coming to grips with a career, a daughter and a community in flux is as touching as it is convincing.”—The Wall Street Journal

“A huge page-turner . . . so compelling . . . a classic beach read, but very smart, very intelligently written.”—Us Weekly, Emily Giffin’s Summer Reading Recommendations

“An acid-laced domestic drama set during one golden summer on the moneyed, beachy North Fork of Long Island.”—The New York Times

“Judy Blundell wields words like an oyster knife in this shimmering story of art, money, and celebrity.”—Helen Simonson, New York Times bestselling author of The Summer Before the War

“A wry, often hilarious story of a woman trying to keep it together when everything is going so, so wrong.”—Real Simple

Good start but.... Interesting setup-a family rents out their Long Island beach house every summer so they can afford to pay the mortgage the other 9 months of the year. The main character Ruthie is interesting and relatable and there is clever use of her teen daughters text messages to create tension. But the author also brings in a side story narrated by a much younger character named Doe that is more like a young adult novel within the main story-which is the authors previous genre. And the ending is the worst...The most likable character ends up the loser on all sides while the mostly awful male characters don’t suffer any consequences, and the only people she takes to task are the 2 friends who have done the most for her. Not the ending we want for a light summer read.

wow!. I have found a new author! She is smart, witty, and awesomely interesting. Best book I’ve read in years. A page-turner for sure! Absolutely loved it.

Not my cup of tea. I finished the book because I always finish a book I start. It found it tedious mainly because the characters were not flushed out enough at the beginning to hold through.

Perfect book for the beach!. Was fortunate to receive an advance copy through BookishFirst and thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are flawed which makes them very human and believable. The main character Ruthie is going through some tough times and makes some bad decisions but I still found myself rooting for her to straighten out her life. Touching, emotional and surprising. Highly recommend!

Will it never end. The title says it all!

Entertaining. The Paris Wedding is about Rachel West, who in th beginning of the book was a young girl. She had a lot going on at the age of 18, he mother had been diagnosed with MS, she’s in love with a boy named Matthew and he decides to move away. Now as an adult, she questions some of the decisions she had made over the years. Funny how we look back and think we might of doesn’t higns different, but would we really? Would we be where we are today and be happy? That is what type of story this takes us through. Rachel chose to care for her mother instead going with Matthew, her love to Sydney. He was the mans she thought she would marry andlive happily together. 10 years later, he is getting married and has invited her to come to the wedding. Not sure if I’d be able to go and watch the man, I wanted to spend my life with marry someone else. But, Rachel in fact goes… Rachel’s Mother has passed, and as someone who cared and lost parents to terminal illnesses, I could easily relate to Rachel and her pain and anguish. She feels disappointed that they life she had stayed still while everyone around her just moved on. She feels she missed so much, but she also feels guilty for feeling that way and just loved Rachel and her caring spirit. Even after her Mother’s passing. The other characters that were in Rachels life such as Sammy, her best friend and even Bonnie, “the other woman” who is marrying Matt were such a great addition. And of course I have to mention the seetting in Paris. Nash did such an amazing job capturing it, and makes me want to visit there even more than I already did. The ever present pain of the loss combined with the regrets and surfacing feelings she thought made for some emotional moments. There is a gorgeous photographer that catches her eye while all of this is going on. Loved Him! The ending was so what I was hoping for and no, I will not be giving anything away as to the “who” was part of the happy ending. This was such a wonderful story of love of family, love of a love lost. But also such an inspirational story of Rachel picking up the pieces of the life you were dealt and moving on to bigger and better things. I simply can’t recommend this enough.
