The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton & Lara Love Hardin Book Summary

Oprah's Book Club Summer 2018 Selection

The Instant New York Times Bestseller

A powerful, revealing story of hope, love, justice, and the power of reading by a man who spent thirty years on death row for a crime he didn't commit.

“An amazing and heartwarming story, it restores our faith in the inherent goodness of humanity.”
—Archbishop Desmond Tutu

In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only twenty–nine years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free.

But with no money and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in agonizing silence—full of despair and anger toward all those who had sent an innocent man to his death. But as Hinton realized and accepted his fate, he resolved not only to survive, but find a way to live on Death Row. For the next twenty–seven years he was a beacon—transforming not only his own spirit, but those of his fellow inmates, fifty–four of whom were executed mere feet from his cell. With the help of civil rights attorney and bestselling author of Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, Hinton won his release in 2015.

With a foreword by Stevenson, The Sun Does Shine is an extraordinary testament to the power of hope sustained through the darkest times. Destined to be a classic memoir of wrongful imprisonment and freedom won, Hinton’s memoir tells his dramatic thirty–year journey and shows how you can take away a man’s freedom, but you can’t take away his imagination, humor, or joy.

Eye Opening. What a story. Opened my eyes to see what a problem there is in this country. They say 1 in 10 on death row is innocent. Even if the number is 1 in 1000 it’s still heartbreaking. God bless Ray Hinton.

The Sun Does Shine. It shows the biases in the criminal justice system. Also shows the importance of hope, faith, love, friends and family in life but especially when one has to deal with the injustices of society.

The Sun Does Shine. A great read and well written. Very thought provoking.

The Sun Does Shine. Inspiring book! It’s all about hope.

Compelling. The MOST compelling story I have ever read! The strength & love that this man shows after all these years is breathtaking!

The sun does shine. One of the most riveting, accounts of our justice system gone wrong. A most heartfelt and beautifully written account of an innocent man who simply wouldn’t give up! I learned so much from you, Anthony Ray Hinton! I no longer believe in the death penalty and will follow you and your cause until the end of your days, or mine, whichever comes first! Thank you a million times over for sharing your beautiful and gut wrenching story. I hope to achieve in my lifetime, half the love and compassion that you have shown others. Be well, and live long so you can spread your message far and wide! God bless!

Eye opener to death row. First foremost I want to thank Our Lord for saving this innocent man life. Great book, I would love to meet Anthony some day and give him big hug. I want to apologize for the injustice at your trial for all of the white trash that participated and had a hand at finding you guilty to death. I’m so curious if you made a point to at least call the idiot prosecutor once you was a free man just to say, I’m Home, lol. Ik he has wrote a book too which I won’t waste my time reading his lies! You deserve millions and that’s still not enough.

The Sun Does Shine. This was an excellent book. Very enlightening and inspirational. If more people were like Mr. Hinton we wouldn’t be in the situation that the world is in now.

Excellent piece of literature. This is an excellent piece of literature that further unveils the truth surrounding systemic racism and social injustice. Hinton does a profound job taking the reader on the journey of his 30-year experience on death row. He lures you in with vivid descriptions of his time in prison and fight for freedom. And as the story unfolds, you can’t help but pause to wonder how you, the reader, would handle spending a large portion of your life paying for the crimes of an unknown murderer.

Truly inspiring. Anthony Ray Hinton is an amazing person. He lived through 30 long years of unjust imprisonment and yet has not become bitter.

Outstanding Book. This is a must-read for anyone facing adversity. Ray Hinton’s strength and endurance is an example for us all. This book has changed the way I look at prisons, prisoners, and our court system. I am thankful for Ray Hinton and this informative and inspiring book. I think that this book should be required reading in our high schools and colleges.

A Must Read!. This is my favorite book of the year because it sheds light towards the many wrongful convictions and racism that occurs throughout our criminal justice system. Although Anthony Ray Hinton spent most of his life in prison for a crime he did not commit, he used his mind to take him to places he could only dream of. Thus, it helped him throughout his rough days. His faith, hope, determination and compassion throughout the book showed his true strength. I am very glad that he shared his story because not everyone one is alive to share theirs. To his lawyer Bryan and his friend Lester, your commitment towards him and unconditional love is tremendous. Our system needs refreshing and upgrading because it help contributes to our human errors.

The sun does shine. Should be mandatory reading in every high school and college. Especially in Law school !

The Sun Does Shine. This is the most incredible book I’ve ever read. The truth, the faith, and endurance of this man is more than soul searching. I thought I knew my own beliefs, but this book has forced me to see the insanity of the justice system and the taking of a human life in order to “prevent the taking of human life.” Life changing. Belief changing. Heart changing.

Unforgettable. 4.5 stars The Sun Does Shine is an unforgettable, haunting story of a terrible injustice that was done to a black man from Alabama, Ray Hinton. In 1985 Anthony Ray Hinton was convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sentenced to die by execution. Ray spent nearly thirty years on death row before the state of Alabama admitted that they had made a mistake, and set him free. Although evidence and a polygraph test had proven Ray to be innocent of the crime, that he was accused of, he sat on death row for thirty years, anyway. This memoir is heartbreaking and brought me to tears several times. When Ray Hinton decided to stop hating the people who put him on death row, his life and those around him began to change. Ray adopted his inmates as his new family and brought inspiration, laughter, and faith to everyone on his cell block. Even the guards couldn’t help but like Ray Hinton. Although this story was difficult to read because of the terrible injustice, done to an innocent man, it’s a powerful novel; moving and unforgettable. This story will stay with me for a very long time. Thank you St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley, for my advanced review copy.

The Sun Does Shine. A really great book. Full of emotions all through the book. Further proof that the system is broken. It took to long to prove he was innocent and that is so sad.

Justice and Hope. This book highlighted how broken our justice system really is. How can one make a decision to end another persons life? How can one live with hope knowing their life is limited? I can’t imagine how I would have kept faith and hope over 30 years and after countless court denials. Ray, is a powerhouse. He’s definitely a hero and a source of hope for many prisoners and for families who have one incarcerated. I loved this book so much. I’m glad Ray is a free man!

Must Read!!. The Sun Does Shine is an amazing account of a failed criminal justice system quick to judge a man without proper means to properly defend himself. It shows us that in the end true justice prevails. This book shows us that perseverance, love and forgiveness outweighs negativity coming our way. Anthony Ray Hinton is an inspiration to us all. Must read novel.

Life Changing. Thank you Anthony for sharing this wonderful story. If God sent you his best lawyer, God definitely sent you to be his best writer and a source of hope and inspiration to others.

Breathtaking. I read the book in 1 day. I found myself crying few times. God bless u. I don’t know if I was able to make it. I am sorry 4 u.

The sun does shine. A stark tale of injustice yields to regained hope and the choice to live with grace. A sad reality of the inequality of class, race and poverty that begs for understanding and reform. Ray tells a story you need to read.

Amazing Biography. I rarely like reading biographies. But when this book showed up in Oprah’s book club, I jumped and bought it (her recommendations never fail). And I am glad I did. Mr. Hinton’s story brought me inside death row, I laughed with him, suffered with him and cried in almost every chapter. As a Hispanic American woman, I felt sorrow for the life’s of everyone in a disadvantage position and specially for the African American community in the United States. Racism and injustice has not ended. I’m so happy Anthony Hinton found justice, even if it took 30 years, but I wondered how many innocent souls never did, and suffered the death penalty? I love the friendship he has with Lester and reminds me of my own best friend...this book is a MUST READ...Filled with love, hope and justice for a man that deserved it. I really hope Anthony gets to meet Halle, Sandra and Kim, in real life, one day and thank them for their part in helping him survive through 30 years....

The sun does shine. If we think we have any problems - read this book. It puts all our troubles in perspective. My daughter is engaged to a beautiful black man- it kills me to think of him being accused and charged for something he didn’t do— all because of the color of his skin and his growing up poor. I think of my grandchildren and the racism that still exists. Will they have a harder time in a world that still looks at the color of our skin and immediately judges them. I pray for justice and fairness. I hope we can change a system that is broken. I admire the Mr Hinton - only through the grace of God could one man endure the fate he was given. God bless you and your life of freedom. You book was heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time. Thank-you.

Inspirational. Anyone in any situation can learn about living a good life from this beautifully told unimaginable horror

The Sun Does Shine. This book is a must read for everyone! It is an incredible story about the human spirit. I couldn’t put this book down, I became completely enamored with this tragic story and Ray’s commitment to proving his innocence.

Great book. What a great book!!

Not Bad. Good Read,, well told story ,, some parts were a little stretched out, but over all,a good read.

The sun does shine. Excellent read my heart does out to all those innocents convicted of a crime they clearly have not committed. Thanks to all the Brian Stevenson’s of the world and good luck to Ray.

AMAZING BOOK. THIS BOOK IS LIFE CHANGING 5 STARS

Powerful Book, Inspiring Story. This book provides great insights into a terribly flawed justice system beyond repair. Ray’s perseverance and faith in God is phenomenal! Lester’s unwavering friendship personifies true friendship. In addition, the book is well written and my heart broke as I read each page. Great read!

Must read. God bless you Ray

Amazing. This was the most amazing book I have read for a long time. It brought me to my knees, it made me so angry at times, it made me sad and it gave me hope. Ray, I am so sorry for what you had to go through. God created a great man named Ray. Thank you Lester and Bryan for believing, having faith and the unconditional love you gave you gave Ray. You are truly great men.

Great book.. As I read this book I put myself in Rays place. Sad cause the system really is broken. Not everyone is innocent. Not everyone is guilty either.

I could not stop crying.. This book is a must read for anyone who doesn’t understand the way the judicial system treats people of color in our country. Mr. Hinton spent 30 years on death row for crimes he never committed. And even though he was not put to death, those 30 years stole something equally valuable - The life he could’ve had. His lineage children he might’ve had, his relationship with his mother. All because Alabama couldn’t admit that they did wrong by him. The fact that he came out of this horrible experience with so much hope and peace in his heart is incredible. He had true friends by his side. At the end of the book there is a very long list of names of death row inmates. Please don’t skip over those names. Look at them, and realize that any of them could have a story like Mr. Hinton‘s.

Truly amazing. I have nothing but great thoughts when it comes to this piece. I had very emotion while reading.. happiness, sadness, confused, disappointment, relief. I am so thankful to have read an amazing book.

The sun does shine. Great book inspiring

Amazing story of forgiveness. Anthony’s story helps keep my heart soft to people who hurt me - Thank you and yes the death penalty does need to come to an end!

Amazing. This is quite a captivating read about life on death row, keeping faith, finding hope and good even in the darkest of places. I couldn’t put it down! I read it after reading Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, and seemed as a perfect order to read these books.

Thank you Ray. One of the most moving stories I have read. Thank you Oprah for recommending this book.

Amazing! Read it in one day-couldn’t put it down!!!!!!. Amazing story of faith and injustice but a truly inspiring story!!!

Incredible. One of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read.

Thank you for sharing your story.. This book made me cry. I can’t believe that racism is alive in this day and age! God Bless you Anthony Ray Hinton. You didn’t deserve 30 years on Death Row for a crime you didn’t commit. You are what is good in this world. I pray you live the rest of your life in peace and please never stop your fight to end the death penalty. This book certainly convinced me that this world has no room for a death penalty conviction. God bless you....
