My Year of Rest and Relaxation Book Reviews
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh Book Summary
From one of our boldest, most celebrated new literary voices, a novel about a young woman's efforts to duck the ills of the world by embarking on an extended hibernation with the help of one of the worst psychiatrists in the annals of literature and the battery of medicines she prescribes
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, works an easy job at a hip art gallery, lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?
My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a powerful answer to that question. Through the story of a year spent under the influence of a truly mad combination of drugs designed to heal our heroine from her alienation from this world, Moshfegh shows us how reasonable, even necessary, alienation can be. Both tender and blackly funny, merciless and compassionate, it is a showcase for the gifts of one of our major writers working at the height of her powers.

Came at a perfect time. To feel a relatable despair is comforting and watching a life unravel and come back together that is not yours is an enlightening experience
My Year of Rest and Relaxation. Great Book.
Interesting. Honestly it was a little boring but at the same time interesting i liked the way she wrote this book but honestly i think this book is a little overrated.
Couldnāt stand it.. Couldnāt find anything to like about this book. The characters were so self-indulgent and ridiculous. Perhaps that was the point but not into this at all.
Racist. The constant passive aggressive, racist references to Asian people were pretty off putting. Apparently this white author has been to China. She must know everything about Chinese people and their shortcomings. Other than that, this novel is just trying too hard to say something without actually getting the point across.

so dreadful. Honestly, I tried so hard to like this book because everyone was hyping it so much I thought it might be great. It wasnāt. The main character was terribly unlikeable and that isnāt even the worse part, itās that she never seemed to learn any better, I donāt understand what the point of this book was. It lacked meaning. So boring. Itās not worth the read.
MyYear of Rest and Relaxation. I guess Iāve read too many books like this full of lists of drugs, movies, young hedonists. I didnāt see anything new about her style of writing or its content. Louise D, Oakland CA
Amazing. read it in a day and couldnāt put it down sooo good feels like your on the journey with the main character.
waste of time. Iāve never rated a book so low but jeez. It took me so long to finish because there was nothing there. And it never got better.
Beautiful Read. Read this book if you feel like being depressed for a little while. You have to be in the type of mood to dig it. Itās easy to read and easy to understand why she feels the need to isolate herself. Iām sure we all wish we had the luxury to sleep for a year to heal ourselves. Itās does leave you with a certain type of hope at the end though.
Dark & Wonderful. I couldnāt put it down. A beautifully written novel that had my eyes skipping down the page in order to find out what terrible inevitability was waiting for the main character as she descended into self-destruction.
Read it !. The end had me destroyed
Massively depressing and dull!. I am dumbfounded. This book is awful, simply awful. Dark, depressing and without any real meaning. I found myself depressed and sad reading it. I hated the main character and her friend Reva. Who was made out to be a muppet. Donāt buy this book!
Small. Another pretentious showcase of the following word combination: āIām a new yorkerā
Relatable Hateable. This book is amazing. Will do a better review later.
My life of rest and relaxation.... I canāt believe I finished this book...it was so bad. To follow the protagonist through her privileged self-indulgent, drug haze for a year was beyond tedious. I cannot believe this was/is a best seller.
Not a book, an Experiance. Something like this comes around quite rarely. Art.
Wide Awake. Raw and authentic. Not meant to uplift, but to confront. Something amusing with an unlikable protagonist, yet unprecedentedly relatable. It renders the reader, a controversial narrative dripped in melancholy and prosaic truths of the privileged. The modern Bell Jar, if you will.
This is a bad book. This is a bad book.
Underwhelming. I picked this book because I felt I could relate to the main characterās feelings and predicament, but this book barely scratched the surface of what I was hoping to understand isolation as a form of self-care.
Good. Thought provoking never boring good read. Thatās it. Left feeling better not doing nothing. I rest now
Horrible book. DO Not waste your money!!!!
Not A YA Novel. If characters being unlikeable, or books lacking a clear fable-like conclusion, are things that off puts you, I would recommend returning to Coleen Hoover novels. If you like interesting books about morally dubious characters that offer interesting insights into their psyche and make you think, if you like literature that makes you uncomfortable and introspective, this book is for you.
Harrowing yet captivating. I was so immersed in this book I read it from start to finish in one sitting. It was gruelingly raw heart wrenching and angst filled with this womanās loss and her indifference to living after losing her parents. Her quest into a drug fueled deep deep of hibernation in hopes to come out the other side a new individual who isnāt plagued with despair anger and apathy is one you wonāt soon forget.
I loved this book. Dark yet funny. I laughed out loud . You donāt ever know the main characterās name but you donāt need to! I breezed right through it. I loved this authorās storytelling.
The book sucked. Horribly boring. It was interesting in the beginning but itās a waste of time. Not worth reading.
This type of self care is not a virtue. Not sure what author is trying to elevate.. I know that the narrator is an anti-hero, but thereās nothing more to much of this book that a listing of strong drugs and pill popping and worthless exchanges with a quack psychiatrist that apparently gets to keep on abusing her power. If the narrator wants to off herself, go ahead and do it. Thereās no virtue in this version of self care- medicating yourself silly. And then the ending which we see coming is cruel and without sufficient care or critique for the narrator wasting away a year drugged out, self harming, and harming others. Thereās nothing redemptive about this.
Hard no. Dark. Depressing. Made me feel sick reading this. The last 2 chapters were the only decent parts of this book. The only reason it is not a 1 star is because I have to at least acknowledge that the author is talented in her ability to write a novel that evokes such intense feelings.

Dark. I love her writing.
It is great. She is the best writer ever smart and pretty Get it
Great read. Did this in the chicago loop during covid August 2020-April 2021. No pills though
Meh. It was okayyyyy,, I enjoyed how it indulged into my already existing depression but genuinely nothing special. If you have time then itās fun but if youāre looking for something poignant this isnāt it. Made me jealous that Iām not a rich white woman with generational wealth who could take a year off of work to do drugs though.
Okay. I thought it was an easy read, kept me reading although tiresome and reparative. The meaning was tied together in the end and although the character development took too long I understood the intention. Wished it was more exciting but obviously that wasnāt the point. Still a simple and valuable read, I guess!
If you donāt like this, something is wrong with you. āIt was boringāā¦āit was darkāā¦ hello, it was REAL, beaches.
I liked it. Maybe more because of the writing than the plot, but I did like it. Mostly because it felt very real. I feel like these characters exist IRL, which is why itās sad. But also reassuring, since Iām nothing like them. Their friendship was depressing and I feel this is common. Basically, this is the opposite of what I want in life. So, if you look at it like that, it makes you feel better!
strange. a strange book for women who are truly ill, but honestly this book was a good read and really funā¦ plus i have an idea now
Honest and unusually good.. Honest and unusually good. At this time of my life I needed it, as a reminder of our human nature. Hope, itās what I felt at the end of the last chapter.
Nothing there. Big waste of time. Nothing really there but negativity and a shallow intellect.
pretty good. I really enjoyed it. I took off a star bc the ending felt a little rushed
disappointed + gives bad message. Spoiler Free! This book was such a let down. As someone who has battled with depression their entire life I did emphasize with MC and find part of her in myself, because of that I was interested to set how her battle with the depression will fare and wellā¦ her āvictoryā is so unearned. Unearned is the word. Completely unearned. It wasnāt a eye-opening, life changing victory it was just the story of a pretty girl going to sad to happy with no self-reflection. Also, the ending chapter is so jaring and weird, I honestly donāt understand it. If you get to it, and the description of the woman at the end, hopefully youāll understand what I meant by a bad message.
i love it. I really couldnāt put it down
Fascinating!. I really liked this book. It took a common ātroubled young heroine who uses drugs to copeā trope and wrote it with originality and emotional honesty. The characterās inner world is written with such precise detail you will feel that sheās real despite the fact that the things she experiences border on the unbelievable
Profound (yet hilarious). Some may find the characters so off-putting as to never dig past their surfaces, but thereās a lot of insightful commentary on modern cosmopolitan life here, all told through the lens of a hilariously insufferable (or insufferably hilarious?) main protagonist. The ending is stunning.
I enjoyed it. Boring but good in a way
Great read. Real page turner, just the last few chapters on their own make the whole book a great read. Main protagonist is a wee bit annoying sometimes, but I mostly enjoyed being inside her head.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation. This is really one of the most unpleasant reads I have ever experienced. Donāt bother reading it to the end....there is absolutely no payoff for time spent.
soso. I can relate to her alot however it was pretty boring on real peak just steady misery. the ending was disappointing i wish she would elaborate on how she was feeling and where her life plans went on from there just a little
Truly awful by trying to be deep and original. Worst book I have ever read. Hated it. Nothing came full circle. Author tried way too hard to be creative.

Not worth your $. I wasted my time and money reading this book :(
To each their own. Iām not a huge reader and this was the first book Iāve picked up since high school but I really loved this book & the writing. A lot of people didnāt enjoy or understand this book but I think for people who can relate itās a lot more than some girl who sedates herself for a year.
