Believe Me by J.P. Delaney Book Summary

In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation.

“[A] rich, nuanced, highly literary take on the Gone Girl theme.”—Booklist (starred review)

Claire Wright is desperate. A British drama student in New York without a green card, she takes the only job she can get: working for a firm of divorce lawyers, posing as an easy pickup in hotel bars to entrap straying husbands. But then the game changes.

When one of her targets becomes the suspect in a murder investigation, the police ask Claire to use her acting chops to lure him into a confession. From the start, she questions the part she’s being asked to play: Is Patrick Fogler a killer? Or is there more to this setup than she’s being told?

Claire will soon realize she is playing the deadliest role of her life.

Girls. Almost as good as the girl before

Couldn’t put it down. Worth the read. I had to know who the killer was and I loved navigating the story itself.

Beautiful cover...great premise...but it fell flat. An actress moves to America from the UK to play the role as an undercover agent. Claire is a struggling actor taking acting courses while working to master her skills as an agent. Claire is a convincing actress playing many roles in this story. Where I lost interest was with the mention of this book Les Fleurs du Mal. The references from this book were confusing. Then the author included translations of Baudelaire’s poems which were boring. These translations led to poems of which I had little interest in. I thought for sure there was a method to this madness, but I felt nothing but confusion. I usually enjoy trying to solve the crime and studying the motives of characters, but this is layer after layer of mistrust. I struggled with its delivery and I had very little interest in Claire and Patrick’s characters. Nothing worked for me. I was so drawn to the cover of this book. The cover and book description were so promising. Once Patrick’s character was introduced with his preachings about Baudelaire I started skimming. This just wasn’t interesting to me.

Believe me. Twists and turns until the very last page.

Don't waste your money. Implausible story line with shallow characters. Painful read.

FANTASTIC!!!. Hurry up and write another!! I can’t wait!!

Absolute page turner. They need to make this a movie!!! I was hooked from start to finish and the ending did not disappoint!

Great reading!. Our heroine is a 25 year old actress from England. She is in New York as a student studying drama. Previously, when she was 17 and still in England, she had a brief affair with an actor that went bad. As a result she was pretty much blacklisted there and had to succeed in New York. She also worked, under the table, for a team of divorce lawyers getting taped evidence of cheaters. One night she goes to a hotel to meet an unhappy wife who warns her to be careful of her husband and to be leery of him. She goes to the bar and eventually meets the man who is good looking, intelligent and charming. He also will not do anything more than speak with her in the bar. When he leaves she returns to the room to get paid and tells the wife what happened. During the course of the night, the wife is brutally murdered and the real story begins. The police are convinced either she or the husband is the culprit and she agrees to work undercover, acting, to learn the truth. The poetry of Baudelaire is also interspersed into the story. It deals with BDSM, murders, psychosis, various kinds of abuse and the application of this all. It is very well written and will grab the reader from the onset and not let go. Thanks to Net Galley and Ballantine for an ARC for an honest review.

Mind bending. One of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time. A journey through the catacombs of the mind, seamlessly (with a certain liberty taken) interwoven with the life and masterwork of Charles Baudelaire. A literary ghoul’s dream.

All filler, no thriller. I know that “JP Delaney” is a pseudonym for an author that’s written many bestsellers, and I know that this book is a rewrite of a novel from many years ago that failed to sell. But sometimes you just have to admit that they can’t all be winners. An interesting, but cliche, premise slapped on top of a non-suspenseful psychological thriller, is not a recipe for success. Ultimately, this book was pretty boring. Roughly 60% of it felt like filler (pointless scenes to fill the gaps between the scenes that actually mattered in an attempt to extend the book to more traditional length). Even then, it is still a very short book. And given its short length combined with the popularity of The Girl Before, I’m anticipating this book to be grossly overpriced.

A waste of time. This was insane!!!!!! It was a waste of my money and time

Pretty good. The beginning and end were good but the middle lost me to the point I almost stopped reading the book. I think it was a little drawn out but an okay read.

A book only an actress could love. I think only an actress could really like this book. I found this to be quite boring and predictable. I feel like The author was trying to be dark and shocking, but I think it all just fell flat.. and in the end it was just as I expected. All the acting details just seemed self indulgent and were such a snooze I had to skim over them.

Really predictable. Don’t bother. It’s predictable & gets cheesy towards the end.

Don’t buy this book if you loved the girl before. I only bought this book because I loved jp delaneys the girl before. So much so that I just knew I would love any additional work. This book was called a psychological thriller but it is not. I was so bored and annoyed with all the baudelaire talk. There was no psych, no thrill, no twist, nothing. This book just never got good. Maybe the girl before was an anomaly in genre and plot/writing. I will definitely be more hesitant when buying any more of jp delaneys work. I was very disappointed with this title.

Believe Me. Very well plotted. Lots of twists and turns. Had me guessing right up to the end and a very satisfying ending there was.

Wow. I couldn’t guess what was real and what was fake. Claire has definitely got to be a real nutcase though
