Fight or Flight by Samantha Young Book Summary

A series of chance encounters leads to a sizzling new romance from the New York Times bestselling author of the On Dublin Street series.

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn't hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava's ever had. And that's all it was--until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb's orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he's stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart's in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she's made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn't quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her....

Of course I loved it. Loved this one, as per usual. I particularly enjoyed the supporting characters. I have yet to find a Samantha Young book that is just meh!

Do it!. Definitely worth the read. I couldnā€™t put it down!

Quite the Angst Riddled Enemies-to-Loversā€™ Story. I adore Samantha Youngā€™s storytelling and the way she creates such dynamic heroes and heroines, and I also love a good enemies-to-loversā€™ storyline. So, with the release of Fight or Flight, I was able to get my Samantha Young fix as well as experience a passionate, emotional, and witty story that pits an intelligent and driven American against an arrogant Scotsman and all the ways that fate intervenes to keep these two in one anotherā€™s crosshairs despite their antagonistic encounters. Ava Breevort is an intriguing heroine - one whose past dictates her present more than she would like; in fact, the reason she crosses paths with Caleb is because she was at a funeral for a childhood friend and had a series of misfortunes on her way back to Boston. I think a lot of readers will relate to Ava and the way she is deals with the lack of love sheā€™s had in her life from the people who were supposed to love her most, and we will also cheer her on as she works to find her voice in all situations and give as good as she gets, not just from her ex, but from her cranky and downright mean, at times, sex buddy. Ava definitely seems to come into her own as the story progresses and even though there were times that I felt she gave into Caleb too easily, especially when he didnā€™t seem to deserve it, thereā€™s a reason she feels so strongly connected to himā€¦now, she just needs to figure out if she continues to fight her feelings for him or let them take flight, risking her heart and perhaps her sanity for a shot of something real with this moody Scot who has past issues of his own to sort through and confront. Itā€™s extremely difficult when the hero is an extremely flawed one, like Caleb seems to be, and what makes it even harder is when readers donā€™t get his perspectiveā€¦arenā€™t allowed inside his head to understand what lead him to who he is today; I think that would have gone a long way in helping readers warm up to Caleb a bit more. What does become quite clear, though, the further into the story I read is that thereā€™s more to the Caleb Scott Ava and readers first meet, and even though he left me feeling quite conflicted, not knowing if I wanted to kiss him or throttle him, the way Young reveals Calebā€™s full personality helps us to understand the complexity of this rather difficult man. That being said, there will be readers who wonā€™t be able to see passed some of Caleb Scottā€™s actions, especially those times when his flippant attitude and lack of filter cause more harm than good, which means that he will be a point of contention for some romance readers, causing them a disconnect that they might not be able to overcome. Itā€™s hard to say if Ava and Calebā€™s connection is a healthy one; without a doubt, their physical chemistry is electric, but the deeper these two get with each other, when neither seemed to want anything more than a release and a bit of passion for as long as it lasts, the more improbable a long lasting connection is because unless their respective pasts are dealt with, thereā€™s no way theyā€™ll be able to fight for something they didnā€™t seem to want in the first place. Fight or Flight is quite the angst riddled journey, and while Iā€™m usually averse to such storylines, my love of Samantha Youngā€™s storytelling definitely drew me to Ava and Calebā€™s book, and while I felt emotionally overloaded for much of it, I also didnā€™t want it to end because thatā€™s how much I adore being in the worlds that Young creates. 4.5 Poison Apples (The Fairest of All Book Reviews)

Loved these enemies to lovers. Iā€™ve got a confession to make. I almost didnā€™t read this book because I got swayed by a few negative reviews. I halfheartedly skimmed the start of the book expecting to dnf. Silly me. Before I knew it I was totally wrapped up in Caleb & Avaā€™s love story and had finished the book in one sitting! I loved this enchanting enemies to lovers book. Yes there is a lot more hate than love at first and Caleb is a growly, rude Scot, but thatā€™s kinda what makes him endearing. They fight, they love, he says hurtful things he regrets, but donā€™t we all? I thought it was a great story full of sparks & sass and wonderful secondary characters (Harper & Jamie) who deserve books of their own. Lesson learned- donā€™t let other peopleā€™s opinions influence you. Everyone has their own likes, dislikes and triggers, but I would have been sorry if I had passed on this book because of what someone else thought.

Fight or Flight - loved it!. I must say that I love all of Samantha Youngā€™s work. From the beginning, the ā€œOn Dublin Streetā€ series had me wanting more. Each novel brings its own unique story and I feel that Ava and Caleb certainly had theirs. What started out as angst turned to passion and sadness. I donā€™t want to give spoilers away because I donā€™t think that is fair to the readers, but I feel Samantha had the right number of supporting characters needed to tell this story. Anybody who doesnā€™t love Harper, well I canā€™t even imagine. I would love to see Harper get her own story. I hope to keep filling my library with many more wonderful stories from Samantha!

So good. Loved this story, and Caleb!

I wanted to love it! [SPOILERS]. I really wanted to like this book, but [SPOLIER ALERT] there was this weird underlying vilification of abortion at the end that was meant to explain why Caleb was so cruel. It felt cheap to me, not to mention tone deaf, to claim that his ex ā€œkilled their baby,ā€ and thatā€™s the reason he was so messed up. She had an abortion without telling him, which is a super terrible thing to do if youā€™ve already brought the other person into it. But ultimately it was this womanā€™s body and life, and she didnā€™t want a baby, and thatā€™s the thing she was vilified for, which is absolutely not okay to do. And Ava bought right into it. That sat the wrong way with me, but overall I liked Ava and Caleb and was rooting for them.

Satisfying. Falls outside the standard trope somehow. I appreciate the internal recognition of coming from wounded places, and the external honesty purposely laid out from all characters. The communication was shown as brave without being overly dramatic, and the characters growth believable. Plus, I laughed aloud quite a few times. Thank you for this book.

Fight or Flight. One of my favorites by Samantha Young and hoping for a follow up in the series.

My favorite in a while!. This was exactly the kind of book Iā€™d been longing for. I was fully immersed and couldnā€™t put it down. Great if youā€™re looking to escape into a book on vacation or a cozy night at home. Loved it and already on my way to read more by this author.

Pretty good. A little cliched, but still a good read. Ava and harperā€™s relationship stood out and I wish the author took more time to uncover their backstories to add some depth .

Fun read with great banter!. Fight or Flight by Samantha Young was a fun read about chance encounters between two people who do not like each otherā€¦at first. But when life keeps throwing them back into each other lives, what can you do? Ava Breevort is on her way back home to Boston when she meets the insufferable Caleb Scott. Though they do not like each other, they somehow unexpectedly end up in bed together. Then they move on never expecting to see each other again. Or so they thought! But life definitely had other plans for these two. Though they appear to dislike each other with every encounter, their chemistry is undeniable. I was drawn in by their interactions and absolutely loved their banter. When this temporary situation turns into something more permanent, will they fight for what they can have or will they walk away from all they can be? I truly enjoyed reading Fight or Flight by Samantha Young. I loved the back and forth between Ava and Caleb and their unquestionable connection. This enemies-to-lovers romance was funny and engaging and one I highly recommend. Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog. Happy reading!

Loved!. Please write about Jaime and Harperā€¦

Could not put it down. I absolutely loved the book. It had me laughing out loud, smirking and often reading with my mouth open in shock. There were enough twists and turns to keep me on my toes. The characters built in this story are some of my all time favorites: complicated, relatable and easy to root for as individuals. I loved the career emphasis as well and was pleased to see that two career orientated characters never came to a point where they chose the typical romance novel option of ā€˜living vs workingā€™. So happy to have found the author. Will be downloading all her other books.

A splendid read!. 3.5 stars This was an entertaining read. It had a good mix of light, steamy, and depth. Ava and Caleb had that passionate strong connection. These two went back and forth between enemies to friends to enemies to lovers to friends, etc. Whew these two were giving me whiplash. As the story went on you just never knew what they would do but it made for a fascinating read. I enjoyed getting to know Ava and Caleb as the story progressed and they got to know one another-there was so much more to them than the initial meeting. This book had a lot of different facets to it and is so much more than two people with great chemistry. And I liked them all as they gave the book a more deeper feeling. Overall, this was a splendid read.

3.75 starsā€”pain and heart break, and tainted perception. 3.75 stars--FIGHT OR FLIGHT by Samantha Young is a contemporary adult, stand alone romance story line focusing on thirty-five year old CFO of Koto Technologies Scotsman Caleb Scott, and thirty ā€“year old, interior designer Ava Breevort. Told from first person point of view (Ava) including memories of the past, FIGHT OR FLIGHT follows the enemies to lovers relationship between thirty-five year old CFO of Koto Technologies Scotsman Caleb Scott, and thirty ā€“year old, interior designer Ava Breevort. The death of a former friend, a series of mishaps, a volcanic eruption in Europe, and several flight delays eventually find Ava Breevort facing off against a belligerent and hostile Scotsman slash Viking, who pushes all of our heroineā€™s buttons. From one unexpected delay to another, and an overnight stay in Phoenix, Avaā€™s frustration mounts as Caleb Scott becomes the proverbial thorn in her side, and vice versa. Not that Caleb is thrilled that his business plans have been placed on hold but the continuous reappearance of the beautiful but presumably high-maintenance Ava Breevort begins to chafe at Calebā€™s growing anger towards a woman he perceives as all kinds of wrong. A one-night stand, and another round of run-ins in Avaā€™s hometown of Boston, Massachusetts continues to pull at their mutual attraction but equally mutual hatred for one another. What ensues is the agreed upon friends with benefits arrangement between Ava and Caleb, and the potential fall-out as Ava ā€˜apparentlyā€™ pushes too hard forcing Caleb to hurt the woman with whom he is falling in love. Caleb Scott is a sexy, brooding, and antagonistic male whose dislike of Ava is immediate and aggressive. Unable to let go of the past, Caleb is unbending in his friends with benefits-only arrangement, an arrangement that is about to destroy the heart of our story line heroine. Calebā€™s initial assessment and treatment of Ava is embarrassing and exasperating, as our heroine questions if she has done something wrong, a question that has Ava giving as good as she gets. Ava Breevort knows love and loss, a loss that has affected Avaā€™s self-esteem, and scarred our heroine to the possibility of future love, another betrayal, and issues of trust. Falling for Caleb was never on the radar but having her heart ripped out meant Ava needed to reassess what she wanted in her life. The relationship between Ava and Caleb is an enemies to lovers/friends with benefits arrangement that leads to something more. For weeks Ava and Caleb will be both friends and lovers but jealousy, heartbreak and memories from the past are but the tip of the ice-burg that is slowly collapsing their hard-fought friendship. Caleb wants to know everything about the woman he refuses to love but isnā€™t capable of talking about his own embittered past. The push and pull of jealousy is immature and sophomoric in the face of Calebā€™s inability to feel something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. We are introduced to Avaā€™s best friend, executive pastry chef Harper Smith whose own life experiences are painful and hard ā€“there is a small plot development focusing on Harper, and the fall-out of her own relationship disaster; Avaā€™s bosses Stella and Patrice; and Calebā€™s brother, artist Jamie Scott. I am hoping for a storyline focusing on both Harper and Jamie, but more importantly Harper and Jamie together. FIGHT OR FLIGHT is a story of pain and heartbreak, and tainted perception. Caleb struggles in the face of former betrayal, and paints Ava with the same judgemental brush. The premise is inviting; the characters are dynamic, flawed and broken; the romance struggles in the face of preconceived notions, and demons from the past.

Really really good. This is the first book I have read by Samantha Young but will now definitely be reading more! I just loved this book. I laughed, cried, and lots of other feelings. It was a really great book!

AMAZING. I donā€™t know what else to say! This book was amazing and exactly what I needed!

Finished - Promising Premise, Poor Delivery. I had high hopes for this book. On paper (no pun intended), this book was suppose to be right up my alley. In reality, it fell short for me. To me, the characters didnā€™t have a connection other than mind blowing sex - which was talked about once but then glossed over. After the first time, there were no more steamy scenes in detail. Just glossed over or mentioned in passing. Found myself often bored reading through the chapters, hoping the plot would pick up, but no such luck.
