Time's Convert by Deborah Harkness Book Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches and The Black Bird Oracle comes a novel about what it takes to become a vampire—the fourth in the All Souls series.

Look for the hit series “A Discovery of Witches,” now streaming on AMC+, Sundance Now, and Shudder!

On the battlefields of the American Revolution, Matthew de Clermont meets Marcus MacNeil, a young surgeon from Massachusetts, during a moment of political awakening when it seems that the world is on the brink of a brighter future. When Matthew offers him a chance at immortality and a new life free from the restraints of his puritanical upbringing, Marcus seizes the opportunity to become a vampire. But his transformation is not an easy one and the ancient traditions and responsibilities of the de Clermont family clash with Marcus's deeply held beliefs in liberty, equality, and brotherhood.

Fast-forward to contemporary Paris, where Phoebe Taylor--the young employee at Sotheby's whom Marcus has fallen for--is about to embark on her own journey to immortality. Though the modernized version of the process at first seems uncomplicated, the couple discovers that the challenges facing a human who wishes to be a vampire are no less formidable than they were in the eighteenth century. The shadows that Marcus believed he'd escaped centuries ago may return to haunt them both--forever.

A passionate love story and a fascinating exploration of the power of tradition and the possibilities not just for change but for revolution, Time's Convert, the fourth books in the All Souls Series channels the supernatural world-building and slow-burning romance that made the previous books instant bestsellers to illuminate a new and vital moment in history, and a love affair that will bridge centuries.

Meandering history book with little depth or heart. Was really looking forward to the continuation of the All Souls trilogy. This book meanders around various historical eras with little to no character depth. It just never pulls me in or makes me care about anyone or anything. A poorly written revolutionary history lesson at best... the author managed to make a magical, mythological world of witches and vampires mundane, boring and pedestrian.

Not what I expected. This book is the extra character development you wanted in the previous books.

Interesting but not arresting. I practically drank the first three books, I couldn’t put them down. Staying up until 2am to finish in one go. I was so excited to find out there was a fourth but found it haphazard in comparison. While the writer did pick some of my favorite characters to focus on in this book, the jumping around from character to character, time frame to time frame, location to location wasn’t as successful as in the other books. It was too much and yet I feel like little happened in the book. What I assumed would be the most interesting and pivotal part- Marcus’s time in New Orleans was glossed over in comparison to his time in France or his time in the American Revolutionary War. So that plot point just kinda landed with a thump instead of an explosion. I loved the mix of science and history in the other books and was looking forward to reading the same but I don’t think it was as successful here either. This reads like a first novel, where you developed ideas and characters not forth.

Marcus & Phoebe’s tale, complete unto itself. After the first three, of course. I had to refresh my memory a bit via The World of All Souls—so easy to do electronically. History having been my favorite subject, I appreciated a closer view of historical persons. Due to moving back and forth between California and New Mexico, I managed to cover the history of the (western) world and of the US up to the Civil War three times, without learning anything new, save the history of New Mexico. I seem to be starved for detail, and thus continue to read history in fact and fiction. I would enjoy visiting Hôtel des/Les Révenants and Sept-Tours, for the architecture and gardens. I enjoyed Marcus’s backstory, and the fleshing out of some events from earlier books. Becoming a vampire looks incredibly arduous! If Phillip has a griffin, I can only wonder what Becca will acquire as a familiar. Looking forward to the next installment in this world.

Spellbinding. It’s like stepping from the All Souls Trilogy into book four. I never wanted the story to end, and now, it hasn’t. Perfectly written. All the characters are there, filling in past and present. Just simply a joy to read.

Time’s Convert. Had to stop reading after 500+ pages. Seriously boring — seemed like nothing happened after all those pages.

Fascinating history, but can’t get into vampires. Ugh - read this for book group but hated it and most everyone else did too but only because of the genre. If you can stomach vampire stories, this is your book

AWESOME. truthfully all of Ms. Deborah’s books have been fantastic! I was so thrilled to discover she’s continued the series beyond the first three books. I always thought that there is more to the “whole story”. Sure hope Gallowglass will meet his love. He’s missing from this book (sadly), but is mentioned. (He’s my favorite).. if you’re new to the series I would recommend reading from beginning; first, because the books are great and second, you’ll be lost otherwise.

Meh. I loved the all souls trilogy. As soon as I could, I preordered this book. Unfortunately this book fell short for me. The trilogy was full of suspense and I would stay up late into the night turning pages. This book has very little suspense. It was nice to see how the Claremont’s are doing, especially the kids, but I didn’t get enough of anything. The book just plods along until it ends. I kept waiting for the excitement that never came. I was shocked when I looked down at the page numbers to see the book was almost done. Where was the exciting plot? Just Marcus and Phoebe deciding to mate for life? Boring!

Time Converts. This book does not disappoint. It is an enchanting as the 1st 3 books. I felt I was visiting with old friends. Thank you & please keep writing.

Audible. Having a hard time with the new narrator for this book. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to Jennifer Ikeda since she narrated the first 3 books. You get used to the way characters sound and can distinguish who is speaking as the story is being told. So the switch is a bit frustrating and it’s been hard for me to follow. It may not have been so noticeable if I hadn’t re-listened to the books leading up to the release of this one.

Review: All Souls Universe 1: Time’s Convert. Time's Convert by Deborah Harkness is the first book in her All Souls Universe series. This is a spin-off series to the much beloved All Souls Trilogy and focuses on Marcus and Phoebe whom we met in the All Souls Trilogy. I have read mixed reviews to this series stating that the flow of the story was off, that there wasn't enough drama, that it was more of a historical recounting than a story and to these I personally disagree. Marcus's story is a gem of information and insight. We get to see Diana and Matthew and the rest of the family at Sept Tours and Les Revenants. We are there to witness Phoebe's transition from human to vampire. We are also privy to Marcus's past thanks to Diana's passion for anything in history. The story ebbs and flows between these three places and times (Phoebe in Paris, everyone else at Sept Tours, and Marcus in the past from his time as a soldier in the revolutionary army through to his time in Louisiana). Well-written and the perfect balm to my soul that is desperate for more from this world. Having devoured Matthew and Diana's story and binge-watched (multiple times) the first season of the show on Sundance Channel, this was a great tide me over. Enjoy!

Times Convert. I enjoyed the continued saga of Diana and Matthew, even though they are more peripheral characters as Times Convert focuses on Marcus and his back story. It was enjoyable, but lacked the compelling adventures and thrilling twists of The All Souls trilogy. I am still a fan however and look forward to reading more of my favorite vampires and witches.

Loved it!!!. I loved finding out all about Marcus! So happy the story continued after Diana and Matthew! Can’t wait to see what happens next with their family!

Love ❤️. I waited years for another book to come out and it was worth the wait! Fingers crossed the story continues on and we get another amazing book! ❤️

Times Covert. Boring.

Disappointed. This book by Deborah Harkness had no substance. I was looking forward to reading this book based on her previous offerings in the series. Don’t put yourself through the misery of reading this it.

Disappointing. Loved Harkness’s other works, but Time’s Convert felt like the kind of book a serial fantasy or romance author rushes out to make a deadline. All fluff and no substance.

No plot to be found. If you are a looking for a book with the interesting plot of the previous books - this is not it. It is simply a story of how Marcus became a vampire; period.

Drivel. What was the point of that? Utterly devoid of a plot. Barely interesting. I couldn’t wait for it to be over. The first few books were entertaining but this puts the nail in the coffin. I won’t bother reading any others should she write them. Just awful.

Disappointing. No where near as good as the other 3 books. Doesn’t even read like the same writer as the other books. Was disappointed as I really enjoyed the series up until this book.

Dissapointed. My sister and I listened to the book on a 3 hour ride. We were extremely dissapointed with the new narrator. There were numerous times we had to rewind to understand what she was saying. Her diction was not always clear. Also, how could she not know how to pronounce the name of the characters correctly. Did she not listen to the pevious books? My sister and I believe that they should have waited to get Jennifer Ikeda. For the first time ever I will not purchase the audio book. I will simply continue to read the story.

Not as exciting as the trilogy. While the book was well written, historically engaging, and the characters are still likeable, I felt like it was a race toward nothing compared to the other books. I understand that this book told Marcus’ story and detailed the experience of becoming a vampire, but I was left thinking “Ok so what?” And the discovery regarding Phillip’s nature also seemed anti-climatic. The change in Diana’s and Matthew’s parenting outlook wasn’t a compelling plot point for me - that discovery could have led to more exciting things. Given that each book in the trilogy was compelling on their own, I was not expecting this book to be so slow. I would hesitate to put out the money and purchase another book related to these characters on its release date, as I did with this book.

Loved it!. I can’t wait for Deborah Harkness’s next book!! Please write one about the kids as they are growing up and coming into their magic, and of course, Diana (as mega-tough, super witch!), and Mathew, as the super tough, 1,500 year old, protective Vampire papa! I’d also love to read a book about Phillipe and Yzabeau, and their love story, and the origin of the De Clermont family!!!! Thanks SO much for continuing to put out such great works of historical fiction!!

02/17/2021. I’ll give this 3.5 stars. Not as great as the first 3 but enjoyable. This chapter was mostly about Marcus; becoming a vampire Back in 1770 vs being made A vampire in 21st century.

Lovely. Would love to read more about these characters.

Thanks for keeping the story going. Moves the series forward. Much better to read these books in order to make sense of the rich world Harkness has invented.

Best One Yet. I love the Revolutionary War period and this book so satisfies, using real places and people without overusing them; making them true to the period without letting them overrun the main characters. I cannot wait for the next one!
