Cemetery Road by Greg Iles Book Summary

Don’t miss the latest Natchez Burning novel, SOUTHERN MAN

Sometimes the price of justice is a good man’s soul.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy returns with an electrifying tale of friendship, betrayal, and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a small Mississippi town.

“An ambitious stand-alone thriller that is both an absorbing crime story and an in-depth exploration of grief, betrayal and corruption… Iles’s latest calls to mind the late, great Southern novelist Pat Conroy. Like Conroy, Iles writes with passion, intensity and absolute commitment.”

   — Washington Post

When Marshall McEwan left his Mississippi hometown at eighteen, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington, DC. But as the ascendancy of a chaotic administration lifts him from print fame to television stardom, Marshall discovers that his father is terminally ill, and he must return home to face the unfinished business of his past.

On arrival, he finds Bienville, Mississippi very much changed. His family’s 150-year-old newspaper is failing; and Jet Talal, the love of his youth, has married into the family of Max Matheson, one of a dozen powerful patriarchs who rule the town through the exclusive Bienville Poker Club. To Marshall’s surprise, the Poker Club has taken a town on the brink of extinction and offered it salvation, in the form of a billion-dollar Chinese paper mill. But on the verge of the deal being consummated, two murders rock Bienville to its core, threatening far more than the city’s economic future.

An experienced journalist, Marshall has seen firsthand how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Joining forces with his former lover—who through her husband has access to the secrets of the Poker Club—Marshall begins digging for the truth behind those murders. But he and Jet soon discover that the soil of Mississippi is a minefield where explosive secrets can destroy far more than injustice. The South is a land where everyone hides truths: of blood and children, of love and shame, of hate and murder—of damnation and redemption. The Poker Club’s secret reaches all the way to Washington, D.C., and could shake the foundations of the U.S. Senate. But by the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth about his own history, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

Loved. Very enthralling. As always with Iles, the plot drew me In starting with page one.

Great. Great book!! Loved it!

Frustrating. I am so tired of authors, actors etc who feel they need to force their political views on those who just want to be entertained. A waste of obvious skills. I will not read this man’s work again.

Great!. Greg Iles best novel. I’ve read them all. He’s every bit the equal of Grisham, Connelly, DeMille.

Cometary Road. Engrossing, sometimes compelling, not predictable. Rolls right along with enough introspection to be a serious read, not a light read for lazy minds. A very good book.

Liberal Drama. I’ve always been a big fan of Iles. I’ve read everyone of his novels. So I was very disappointed to find out he is a bleeding heart liberal that allows his biases into his writing. There was enough anti Trump, anti capitalism, anti Christianity and pro gay lifestyle in this book to make you wonder about his intent. Most of those topics did not add anything to the story and if removed would have changed nothing. I’m sorry to say this is the last book of his I will ever read.

The book that wouldn’t end…. One of the longest endings to any book I’ve ever read. Enough already!

Cemetery road. No good guys even the so called better people are despicable.Iles can’t help himself with his political bias,it’s not relevant and diminished the story

Great Story. Excellent story and well developed characters! I have enjoyed all of the books .I have read by Greg Iles

Satisfying and Complex. A bit of Pat Conroy’s naturalism, some 50 Shades eroticism, a lot of the common decency, manners, and familial love that I know fuels Southern small towns. I wandered in, first-time Iles reader, curious about the “anti-Trump bias” which so inflamed a couple of recent reviewers......that’s just baseless. The Great One’s raggedy morals get two factual, subdued sentences, max. And if he’s not fond of Russian oligarchs? then he’s not fond of golf or tans. So thanks, Boomers! I’ll buy more of Greg Iles’ novels. Read this if you’ve sent loved ones to fight in the Middle East, if contemplating adultery, if you’ve been a Scout or an athlete in a tiny poor community, if you’ve sat through a Sunday School debate on why Buddhists can’t go to heaven...... Seriously, if you wonder which compromises with sleazy power mongers make sense for the greater good, this is a case study. I learned a lot: about prehistoric cultures of the Mississippi Valley, about defense contractors in the Middle East (80% staffing from small-town sheriffs and cops? really? )—and Willis the Sex Coach is not to be missed! Evidently it’s much easier to portray evil than good in gripping detail—I don’t quite believe that the “cabal of Southern businessmen” could be so selfish, petty, thin-skinned AND so cohesive & enduring. I would’ve liked more interior development of the saintly smart older women. But it already sprawls, rich and imperfect and surprisingly sexual for such a morality tale. Check it out.

If you don’t enjoy politics in your fiction, avoid.. People read fiction to escape and be entertained, not for political commentary. Unfortunately I bought this book hard copy and didn’t get to read the on-line reviews. 14 bucks to be made angry and toss in the recycling.

Don’t let the political reviews deter you. It took me about 50 pages to get into this and I’m glad I did. I’m almost done with it and have really enjoyed it. It is not a narrative of Trump. So far his name has been mentioned twice, in passing. Small towns are full of politics and that is the gist of this story. The story kept me interested in what will happen next. I like this authors writing and will read more of his works.

Great book!. I wasn’t planning on buying it but after reading reviews from cry baby magats, I knew I had to read it!! Excellent, intelligent read!

A great book!. Awesome story. There were parts that I could put the book down. Excellent story!

Weak. Trite predictable and horribly political. Keep your options open on another profession if your next effort is anything like this garbage. So bad. Why did I finish it...??

Good. 😉🤦🏼‍♀️🏐 Uhh is a ydly😉🧐

Disappointing. Started out beautifully, introduction promised the book would not follow a script as many do in this genre. Then it followed that script exactly. Same old story, with shallow characters and plot full of holes.

Cemetery road. If I wanted a political opinion and lies I would watch cnn. Keep your democratic politics out of your novel. I will never read Greg Iles again

Disappointed. Really need to keep your political opinions out of your books. And to think I purchased this. Can I get a refund?

Poor read. A slog of a read. Good subject that dragged on with meaningless information that added nothing but pages. Political comments added nothing as well.

Cemetery Road. Huge fan of Greg’s work, started with Quiet Game which was great then all of the others never disappointed. Honestly could have done without the political statements contained in this read, one of the reasons I do read fiction is to escape the craziness of today. Poker Club was a bad group of dudes for sure, much like the Double Eagles, enjoyed how they got what they had coming at the end of the book. Not a bad read but not the best, bring Penn Cage back.

Disappointed. I was eager to read this story, having enjoyed so many others by this author. I admit that I only read about 90 pages. Maybe it’s too current or maybe just a case of feeling saturated by daily political opinion that caused me to stumble when I read the name, Trump, and read it again to make sure my eyes hadn’t misread. I thought, “Oh no…”. What followed was some political blather and reference to Russian entanglements. I disengaged from the story. Just to be clear, I would have reacted the same had the name been Obama or Bush or Biden. I am tired - literally exhausted from all the public manipulation, deceit, lazy journalism and opinions. Maybe I will come back and read this story another time…but, probably not.

WARNING: do not buy unless you enjoy Trump bashing. Mr. Iles has decided to use his book to cast aspersions on President Trump. Instead of being an engrossing read like his other books, this is just one more in a long line of people who, apparently, hate the President and the people who support him and his America First platform. It makes me sick that I paid for a book that I had to stop reading less than halfway through. Maybe, the author is hoping that as we lean into socialism his book will not be one that is burned. Mr. Iles, your personal opinions should stay PERSONAL. I would like a refund. I work hard, I purchased your book for entertainment and instead, I spent my money to support a person who wants open borders and globalism.

Complex Like The South Itself. Iles is one of my favorite writers; although, his stories sadden me. Being a prodigal daughter, I can related to the complexity of Pain, Hope, Love, Despair, Regret and Loss. Of realizing, as an adult, the ghostly veil of segregation beneath the surface of my childhood, of the evil men and women still do based on skin color and greed. And, yet, then and now, I see resilience and I see Hope for a better world where actions and character may once again be that we are judged upon. I see acceptance and change for the better. And, yet the darkness of hate and evil still linger at the edges, still raising its ugly head. Iles captures all those emotions and more as well as speaking the Truth about what goes on behind the curtains of Southern ‘civility’ and hospitality. Excellent as always.

Unless you hate Trump, don’t bother!. I have always enjoyed this author but after being subjected to his anti-Trump rants, I will never read another book he writes. When will Novelists, Celebrities and Pro-Athletes learn that people just want to be entertained, not preached at? Very disappointed in you Mr. Isles.

Cemetary Road. I’m a Greg Isles fan. Initially found myself trying to fit in Isles Natchez bases characters into this story, but these characters fully stand by themselves. Background, people and a multi-faceted plot make this book hard to put dow.

Cemetery road opinion. Thought the book was exceptional; couldn’t put it down. However, all of us are so tired of our national political problems and conflicts and wish both parties would grow up. Unfortunately the book had political leanings...when most of us want to just enjoy a good read. There’s a time and a place.

Loved this story. I’ve liked all of the books by the author, but I believe this is my favorite yet.

Outstanding!. Great read as with his other books! It was hard to put down. Anxious for his next novel!

A plus. Amazing book! I have read a lot of books but this is definitely a five star one. Very intricate and never stops moving.

Struggled through this book. The story could have been so much better if Greg had kept Marshall as a purely fictional character. Instead he tried to input TDS, atheism and a non-Southern personality into his lead character and his father. Poorly written fiction. Keep current events out of fiction, please. You’ll lose half your readers.

I will read this many times. An important work.. The depth of Mr. Iles writing has never seemed deeper. I learned from this book, and I was totally spellbound. A previous reviewer took offense and some passing shots at today’s political situation and in true form of the division in today’s society, condemned the entire work. Very sad, that is not what this book was about. Read on and heal a bit. PRNV

Highly recommend. This book was my absolute favorite I have ever read. It was intriguing with twists and turns from start to finish. I love his style of writing. During the race on the river, I felt the heaviness of the situation and felt as if I were actually there. I had to stop reading, close the book and take a moment before I finished that part of the story! I love this book and this author.

Excellent read. My first Greg Iles book but not the last. Beautifully written with enough plot turns to make you dizzy. So worth the time to read it.

Gooder. Just a great book. Well written and engaging. I love the Mississippi references. I am looking forward to reading more of Iles work.

Cemetery Road. Another great read. Deeper and even more engrossing for including the current cancer of bigotry, lies, and misogyny that threaten our country. If it offends some trumpskins , maybe it will also spur a few to eventually move out of the swamp of their rationalizations. A must read!

Disappointed. Ugh-more a romance novel than a mystery/thriller.
