Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci Book Summary

Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it...

Easy read. Reminded me of the written version of a handful of crime television shows. Easy to read - more than one story line which keeps you entertained and engaged.

Long Road to Mercy. Rated 3/5 stars. Very interesting characters. Lots of unexpected twists and turns in the plot. Unfortunately, one of the hokiest drama thriller plots Iā€™ve ever read. Hal R

First started reading Baldacci w Absolute Powe. First book I have been disappointed with. Began with interesting story line but then dropped almost immediately. A new line developed that had potential but went to far off the rails. So many great characters that have been forgotten. Robbie, maxwell, camel club. puller. We are all entitled for a miss hope the next book gets back on track.

Another amazing story.. Another excellent book by Mr. Baldacci, I have read everything that he has written and it just keeps getting better.

Long Road to Mercy. I read it to the end. Hard for me to follow. Did not like the ending.

Disappointed. This was not nearly up to par. I had a hard time following. It seemed to ramble with government conspiracy mixed with geopolitics. I almost did not finish.

Disappointing. The attacks on our president from every direction are tiring and sickening. I did not expect to see it so blatantly in this book. My last Baldacci book, Iā€™m afraid

Long road to mercy.. Save your time and money! I have read virtually all of Baldacciā€™s books . Even got my husband to read and got addicted to Will Robbie and John puller. Wonā€™t recommend this book (road to mercy) to anyone .Sorry Mr. B but this book was an epic fail. You, Patterson and Grisham always go on vacation with me. Please write another Will Robbie SOON.

Long road to mercy. Poorest Baldacci book Iā€™ve read and I read most of his books. Still puzzled about plot and its ā€œresolutionā€?

Laughable. Best adjective to describe this book is ā€œlaughableā€. The plot, the characters, and the thinly veiled accusation that our current President would sell out our country makes it more so. Too bad Mr. Baldacci, I have read 99% of your publications; this is the last.

Very entertaining. Fast paced and entertaining. Good character development but I would say The plot is a little bit far-fetched, which really didnā€™t bother me. I would definitely recommend the book.

Completely Unbelievable. This was a completely unreasonable plot and unbelievable ending. For a David Baldicci book this was a complete fantasy of a plot. Great reading but the plot and sending was a big let down

Long Road To Mercy. Preposterous!!!. The plot, the characters, the writing etc. Just hard to believe this dud from a good writer who Iā€™ve enjoyed in the past. I didnā€™t understand the ending, but hope this character doesnā€™t reappear.

I found a new heroine. Iā€™m looking forward to book 2 in this series

Long road to Mercy. David Baldacci Should stick with his crime novels and stay out of international espionage

Not my favorite. Did not like this book or the characters. Started strong but got boring very quickly. Appeared to be a rush to complete book to go along with the current political climate. That is not why I dislike it, I just didnā€™t find the characters believable. Example; Nobody is getting beat within an inch of their life and carrying a large man on their shoulders the next day a dead one at that.

Terrible. Obvious.. Simple

The poorest Baldacchi book Iā€™ve ever read. The most poorly written Baldacchi book Iā€™ve ever read. Very disappointing. Atlee Pine has potential, but the next story needs a better, more believable plot. Baldacchi resorts too often to clipped prose. He adds filler action that does nothing for the plot and makes you believe heā€™s getting paid by the word, not for the story. Till now Iā€™ve always enjoyed his books. This was an unfortunate exception.

Worst Badachi Book. There wasnā€™t anything I liked about this book. It was too far fetched and his new character, Atlee Pine, was made to be a cross between Rambo and Mitch Rapp. It doesnā€™t work. The plot was unbelievable and bordered on stupid nonsense. I have read every Baldacci book and this is the first one that I feel is not worth reading.

A must read. What a great read! From the first page am hooked and couldnā€™t stop reading. Thank you.

Fast Paced, Thrilling. David Baldacci again has witten a fast paced, action packed, thriller. His attention to detail and ability to draw all the facts together leading up to an unusual climax is unmatched. The only drawback in this novel is that it would stretch credulity to believe that a FBI agent and her administrative FBI assistant could accomplish everything they did together. And, the international intrigue and plot does seem a little farfetched. However, in these times in the Capitol, maybe this could well happen! Enjoy!

Long Ride. Great story. Unique characters. And the Grand Canyon as a backdrop!

Wasnā€™t Impressed.. For such a prolific and highly successful novelist, I was sorely disappointed in Baldacci. Iā€™ve read literally hundreds of novels, many of them suspense and thrillers. In Long Road to Mercy, I was neither in much suspense or thrilled. It wasnā€™t bad; just nothing great. The main character, Atlee Pine, struck no cords in me. She was sketchily drawn, with nothing about her able to elicit any appreciation or admiration. It was almost like reading a long, drawn out FBI case file summary that barely holds your attention. For one of a relatively few times in my life, I could put it down and was not particularly filled with anticipation at the prospect of picking it up again. Had I stopped at any point and never finished it, it would not have bothered me. Like turning off a television show in a series that has grown repetitious and dull, following hackneyed plot devices Iā€™ve seen a thousand times before. Ho-hum.

Long road. An outlandish plot line doesnā€™t completely ruin the book. FBI agent Atlee Pine is a strong and resourceful character who saves the book. Her sidekick Carol talks too much but overall, Iā€™d recommend this book.

Long Road To Mercy. Ugh. Really? Balduchi has lost it apparently. Awful crazy unbelievable plot like some kind of fairy tale you tell youā€™re kids at bedtime. Same on you Dav8d.

Robi series. Where is Will Robi, #6

Sophomoric. Iā€™ve read two of Baldacciā€™s efforts now and I find them sophomoric. His works are poorly, almost histrionically, overwritten. Thinly developed characters rotely solve major world crisis against sophisticated and overpowering adversaries. Yeah, sure, it happens every day. There are better writers in this genre to focus on.

Long Road to Mercy. I am quite a fan of Baldacci and was eager to read this book once it was available but was disappointed. Disjointed and lacking in development and suspense.

Mercy. Agree with other reviewers. I am open to the new character and curious to see her story line continue... but this book was unlike any of his prior books - and Iā€™ve read them all. Disappointing and far from prior quality. Like it was written by someone else altogether.

Long Road to Merch. This has got to be the work of an imposter. It was more comedy than mystery. Not the work of one of the nations greatest author. What a disappointment. This book can not end soon enough.

Not One of His Better Books. I thought this one to be an action adventure book for kids. Literary license aside, the plot was completely implausible. It looks like the author is starting an "Atlee Pine - - fearless FBI agent and world savior super woman" series. I'm a Baldacci fan but I, for certain, won't be buying any more Atlee Pine stories.

Long Road to Mercy. Excellent read! Like this new character. Hopefully, the sequel is coming soon.

Good new character and story. Great to have a strong female and current day events

Not captivating plot. Storyline was too far fetched. Ending was disappointing!!

Disappointed. The new character was interesting but this was a hard one for me to keep up with. No ā€œthrillā€ factor at all

Virtue signal much?. I have very much enjoy reading all Baldacciā€™s previous novels. This one was not much more than a pander to the breathless ā€œRussia, Russia, Russiaā€ narrative from CNN and Wapo, et al. Keep your politics out of your stories, or at least donā€™t make them so obvious. Oh, and those of us who arenā€™t leftists have known that ā€œRussia is not our friendā€ for a very long time. Itā€™s ā€œyour sideā€ that just learned this fact.

Long Road to Mercy. As a longtime fan, I was eagerly awaiting the release of this latest book, only to be disappointed. The plot never really reeled me in as a reader and the ending became predictable once the plotline was developed. I feel pretty confident the N. Koreans would have more imagination than this story suggests, and very few would believe the scenario created around the central idea. This book felt forced all the way through. And at some point I was forcing myself to just get it finished. Baldacci set high standards for his writing with his earlier novels. Unfortunately this latest work does not make the grade.

Interesting, action packed Grand Canyon mystery. I enjoy Attlee Pine & Carol Blume characters ā€¦

Long Road to Mercy. Good heroine; interesting and moving at first; drifted into ā€œfar fetchedā€ toward the end.

Excellent. David does not disappoint...surprised I liked it soo much

Long Road to Mercy. Huge disappointment. I have read all of his prior books. This one goes down the political rabbit hole. In America today you automatically lose half your audience.

Long Road to Mercy.. Love the character Attlee Pine and look forward to more of her stories.

Wow..... This has to be one of the worst books I have ever read. The story, characters, plot and outline are all weak and unbelievable.

Great story, strong cast. Detailed character development and settings along with a fast paced story make this an entertaining read. I look forward to continuing to read the Atlee Pine series.

Who Wrote This?. Easily the most poorly written Baldacci novel ever! I have been a fan forever and canā€™t say loudly enough that this is a terrible book. Did David have a stroke? Did he phone it in? Did he hire a ghost writer? He didnā€™t even get the climate right. Save your cash and get the aptly named Redemption instead.

Great book!. Fun read with great femaLE LEADS

Long Road to Mercy. Iā€™ve read and enjoyed all of David ā€˜s books. This book was almost unreadable. I skipped through large parts of it. And then once again we have liberal politics injected into what should be an enjoyable read. Russian collusion delusion? Last book of his Iā€™ll read.

So tediously written. Like a small child trying to hold your attention by relaying a mountain of irrelevant detail. Had to pitch it at chapter 23 for a more adult book.

LongnRiad to Mercy. I do not think this is as good as your other books. The premise, as far as I am concerned, is very far fetched. It was difficult to stay focused as the plot seemed very thin and unlikely. The scene of them hanging on to the cliff, however, was well written and suspenseful. I noted several grammatical errors along the way. Keep writing. I read all of your books and this was the only one that disappointed me.

Long Road to Mercy. Very disappointing- baldacci needs to stick to his previous characters: John puller, Amos decker etc- forget Long Road to Mercy - donā€™t like the Atlee character - too improbable & unsympathetic my favourite was the John Carr books (Oliver Stone)

Meh. Well written, as Iā€™ve come to expect, but held together with far to many improbable improbables. At 20 bucks, I expect an author to build has book a lot more artfully.
