The Bride Test by Helen Hoang Book Summary

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Kiss Quotient comes a romantic novel about love that crosses international borders and all boundaries of the heart...

Khai Diep has no feelings. Well, he feels irritation when people move his things or contentment when ledgers balance down to the penny, but not big, important emotions—like grief. And love. He thinks he's defective. His family knows better—that his autism means he just processes emotions differently. When he steadfastly avoids relationships, his mother takes matters into her own hands and returns to Vietnam to find him the perfect bride.

As a mixed-race girl living in the slums of Ho Chi Minh City, Esme Tran has always felt out of place. When the opportunity arises to come to America and meet a potential husband, she can't turn it down, thinking this could be the break her family needs. Seducing Khai, however, doesn't go as planned. Esme's lessons in love seem to be working...but only on herself. She's hopelessly smitten with a man who's convinced he can never return her affection.

With Esme's time in the United States dwindling, Khai is forced to understand he's been wrong all along. And there's more than one way to love.

The Bride Test. I found it profoundly heart wrenching and yet filled with hope and love and a wonderful happy ever after Truly a wonderful love story

A slow burn capture of your heart. Loved this even more than the kiss quotient, can’t wait to see what Helen comes out with next!!!

Great story. I really enjoyed this book. I loved Esme. She was very strong and caring. I loved that even though she came to the US to try and marry Khai, she still focused on improving herself and she had other goals/another life outside of just Khai. I also loved Khai and his struggle with his feelings. I really hated how some of his family treated him, especially since they know he has autism. I loved how Khai got to know Esme and appreciated her. I didn’t like that he only lusted after her at first. I felt like that part went on too long but I loved when he actually started getting to know her and caring about her. I think his perception of love was very realistic especially considering what he went through with his cousin. I also think Esme’s “reveal” at the end was overlooked way too easily. I didn’t bother me or lessen my enjoyment that she kept that a secret. I just thought that it was unrealistic that there wouldn’t be even a little tension because of it. Other than that, I thought the book was great. I can’t wait for his brother Quan’s book. I feel like their Dads leaving is going to play a bigger role in his book. I hated the scene where Quan’s mom got mad and said he was “just like his father”. I feel like the mom really compares Khai and Quan and makes it seem like Quan is lacking. That’s such a hurtful thing to say/do and I feel like that really effects his perception of himself. Can’t wait to discover is story.

An all around, great romance. I loved it! A great story with great characters you root for. I love that it was set in the Bay Area with authentic locations.

Another great story from Helen Hoang. This is another truly beautiful story that Helen shows that she can capture lightning in a bottle. I read The Kiss Quotient in January 2020, and totally loved it, so my hopes were high for The Bride Test. She hit it totally out of the park! Esme and Khai’s relationship is so sweet. I read this book in a day! I will definitely be reading anything of Helen’s I can get my hands on. She doesn’t disappoint!

The bride test. It was a great book not bad you should read it :)

A little bizarre. I didn’t not like it, but the premise and some of the situations throughout the story had me scratching my head a bit haha. Maybe it’s a cultural difference I don’t understand about Vietnamese culture and traditions. Just seemed like a far stretch that a single mother would leave her daughter in Vietnam for months because some random lady asked her to try and win over her son, just by showing her his picture and then not telling her a single thing about him…?? Haha just seems so odd to me and I couldn’t really get past how bizarre that situation is.

Girl loves Boy loves Girl 💖. 4.5 stars I absolutely loved The Kiss Quotient and couldn't wait to get my hands on The Bride Test. Helen Hoang did not disappoint and I continue to be impressed by her incredible writing! Khai and My/Esme have a very unconventional meet cute and situation. Their motivations for agreeing to participate are vastly different, but what they find along the way is so uniquely beautiful. Often when a forced proximity trope is used, things come together really quickly and ignite right away. I loved that Hoang let Khai and Esme's relationship build very organically for their personalities. Both are adjusting and learning and it was hilarious (and heartbreaking) to watch them struggle and tackle new experiences. The slow burn build up was very gradual and Hoang kept things perfectly simmering before letting things boil over. There was so much sweetness in the inexperience and wonder that these two discovered. Tears were definitely shed as they confronted their feelings (or lack of) and I felt like the epilogue suited them perfectly. I truly loved Khai and Esme together, but the real star of the book for me was Esme. Esme grew so much throughout the book and I appreciated reading about such a strong and driven heroine. She is clawing at the ground trying to rise above her lot in life and I respected her so much. Reading the author's note at the end brought tears to my eyes because it was not only refreshing, but it also rang so true to my own family's experiences. I'm sure my own cultural background influenced the impact this book had on me, but I think the theme of being truly accepted and loved for who you are and the hope of the American dream will ring true for many. All I can say is thank you Helen Hoang for staying true to the story that you wanted to write and I can't wait for more! *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book*

Just ok.. Ending was amateur

Must read. Loved it!

Nice ending. In the beginning I was not sure if I will like the book. Because the female character is from a quite different background. But there was something how she came to the states and adjusted that make me feel related. But stroke me was how Khai confessed his love in the end in their native language. That is so romantic and impressive. I loved that.

Love!!!. I cannot think of a book I have loved any more. Loved it from cover to cover.

Best love story I know. It's not a typical, traditional love story but it’s the best I ever got the privilege to read.

Excellent. I read both this authors’ books back to back and both were great. I couldn’t put them down. Filled with true emotion and real problems they are gripping in the best of ways. I can’t wait for what comes next, and my only regret is not knowing Vietnamese. I highly recommend!

Phenomenal. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I’d like it in the beginning. This book didn’t seem to have the same sweetness as The Kiss Quotient did, but i quickly discovered I was wrong. I thought Khai was a boring character and I had a hard time seeing any good stories with him. I thought that he was going to be similar if not the same as Stella in the first book, and I didn’t really want to read the same book twice. Turns out that I was so terribly wrong. Khai is such a lovable character and when you get to really know him you can’t help but yelling at him to make the right decisions (like Quan did). And the ending!!!!! I don’t want to spoil it but I connected with the Epilogue so much and I just love that everything worked out in the end with all of the couples. If you aren’t instantly in love with the book I urge you to keep reading until you finally realize that you are. At which point you ride to the end of the book on your very own blue motorcycle.

Worth the read either way.. I can never put down the first 75% of her books but then inevitably they all end so cheesy, predictable and too wholesome to be realistic

Absolutely loved. I loved this book. It is such a unique view so different from my own. Seeing the life and thought process from such a different life was compelling and spellbinding. I fell in love with the characters and didn’t want the book to end. Couldn’t put it down!

??. I didn’t rlly like it bc idc but I’m going to be judge the characters choices and I don’t agree with hiding ur daughter and situation also she Jets offended way to easily and doesn’t want to communicate also the whole plan to get him to confess his live is stupid the idea of a fake wedding like wow aren’t they supposed to be adults it sounds like something a teen would write for a fan fiction or something

Disappointing. Following the near-perfect Kiss Quotient, this book plays out an overused trope and ends in a rushed manner.

Sexy, Charming and Addictive!. I first saw the Bride Test book in a Relay store while I was at the airport. Written by a Vietnamese! Being Vietnamese, it seized my attention. Then I saw that her first book was The Kiss Quotient. So i downloaded it on my phone to read while on vacation. Couldn’t put the book down. Every little detail, I love! Especially when it was referring to Vietnamese culture. One down and I started her 2nd book, The Bride Test. As great as the first one. Now that I’m done with both books, I can’t wait for her 3rd book. I miss the characters already.
