Maid by Stephanie Land & Barbara Ehrenreich Book Summary

"A single mother's personal, unflinching look at America's class divide (Barack Obama)," this New York Times bestselling memoir is the inspiration for the Netflix limited series, hailed by Rolling Stone as "a great one."    At 28, Stephanie Land's dreams of attending a university and becoming a writer quickly dissolved when a summer fling turned into an unplanned pregnancy. Before long, she found herself a single mother, scraping by as a housekeeper to make ends meet.

Maid is an emotionally raw, masterful account of Stephanie's years spent in service to upper middle class America as a "nameless ghost" who quietly shared in her clients' triumphs, tragedies, and deepest secrets. Driven to carve out a better life for her family, she cleaned by day and took online classes by night, writing relentlessly as she worked toward earning a college degree. She wrote of the true stories that weren't being told: of living on food stamps and WIC coupons, of government programs that barely provided housing, of aloof government employees who shamed her for receiving what little assistance she did. Above all else, she wrote about pursuing the myth of the American Dream from the poverty line, all the while slashing through deep-rooted stigmas of the working poor.

Maid is Stephanie's story, but it's not hers alone. It is an inspiring testament to the courage, determination, and ultimate strength of the human spirit.

"A single mother's personal, unflinching look at America's class divide, a description of the tightrope many families walk just to get by, and a reminder of the dignity of all work." -PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, Obama's Summer Reading List

Not impressed. I got tired of the author complaining about almost everything and everyone. She complains about not eating but then when she gets extra money she spends it on an on line dating website. The next time, she goes on a 5-day vacation and leaves her daughter with her abusive ex who she knew was leaving her young daughter with some random guys. Seems she keeps making the same mistakes getting into abusive relationships.

Maid well!. Excellent book! Thought-provoking while really interesting to read. The author does a great job showing (not just telling) you about her journey! While Iā€™ve always been a neat freak, Iā€™m going to be even more mindful of the condition I leave a motel room in! The author has definitely increased my awareness of the difficulties many women face when faced with limited options for supporting themselves and others. Thank you.

Great read, inspiring story. I couldnā€™t put it down. This young mother was trying her best with what she was dealt and her gift of writing has brought us along for the ride. Been there as a single mother also. None of this is easy. No choice is easy.

I finished it. I kept waiting for something to happen. I liked the idea of this book and it wasnā€™t poorly written. It just wasnā€™t memorable for me.

Lots of whining. I realize the extreme hardship the author went through, and I do empathize with her. However, the entire book basically boils down to her repeating over and over again the things she cannot afford. This should be talked about, of course, but it is on every page. She goes on about how much pain she is in from being a maid and the hard physical labor it is and that she has no health insurance. I wonder why she did not get an office position making minimum wage (which is what she made cleaning) and try to work her way up. There are many unanswered questions in the book. All that being said, her family situation is quite sad, she has no support and no one who can help her with child care or financially, not even her parents. She does write about the people whose houses she clean, which is interesting in a voyeuristic kind of way. But other all it is a tiring and tedious read.

Ms. While I really wanted to like this book I found it to ramble way too much. Much of it was overly descriptive to the point I found myself skimming. It did generate in me more empathy for those who need to utilize government assistance out of genuine need. Unfortunately we see way too much of the abuses of the system where I reside. The ending fell very flat. I was hoping for so much more from this book.

Whiny self-indulgent waste of money. Unapologetically narrates one irresponsible life choice after another. An insult to the working poor truly trying to do their best.

Maid. To me the book was whiney. Written by a member of the entitled generation. She talks about living at poverty level yet sheā€™s been to Paris, graduated from college, had health care, had vehicles, and went on vacations. I donā€™t think she knows what poor really is. I grew up poor. And we werenā€™t even the poorest family in the neighborhood, and we all had it harder than this author. I know itā€™s not a contest. But I just couldnā€™t get the whiney tone out of my head. It was an okay ready. Not great, not awful, real whiney. Just my opinion.

Maid. This book was irritating....a 28 year old woman gets pregnant by an abusive man, continues to live with him, goes on public assistance, works her way to a decent living, gets lonely, starts living with another loser, repeats the same mistakes, all the while complaining about the system. Well written but the character was unsympathetic. My opinion, and everybody has one.

Touched on so many issues. Emotional abuse was the main issue, but also parents with mental health issues, a bit of alcoholism, a bit of hoarding, depression, and how hard it is to escape some circumstances when the odds are stacked against one financially. Highly recommend

Much better options to root for.... I love to cheer for someone that faces adversity and rises above, especially someone thatā€™s faced a life thatā€™s all too familiar. Unfortunately, this person is NOT Stephanie Land. I cannot tell you the number of times ā€œI didnā€™t have a choiceā€ is written in this book when clearly she did. I hope Ms. Land turns the critical eye she administered to others (soccer moms, single moms, elderly people, the Chef, etc) inward and gets to work taking responsibility for what she did with her middle class upbringing that took her down the path she chose. She could also gain perspective should she choose to bail on her self-imposed pity party and engage with those that are working hard for a better life. The only one I felt for was Mia... poor thing.

Required Reading!. Should be required reading for every person in Congress ā€” and other governmental agencies ā€” who make decisions as to where, when, why and how financial aid is given in this country.

Loved. As real as it gets. You feel as if you are walking a mile in her shoes. Highly recommend.

Honesty. The author writes with the authority and honesty Of living life the best she can and doing it with very little help. The saddest part is that some in this country doubt the amount of work and commitment that goes into such a life.

A success story. A success story about a young momā€™s determination and fight to provide for her child and make a better life for them on her own. A harsh lesson to those who judge and criticize people purchasing food with government resources. Think before you speak and be kind!

A page turner. I couldnā€™t put this book down. It was absolutely beautifully written, heartbreaking and funny. I love her story, her resilience, how hard she fought for a better future for herself and her daughter. This book makes me want to write my own life story one day.

Ok, but lacked compelling storytelling. It was ok. Her story is inspiring, no doubt about it. It gave me empathy for those in poverty. But I think it was how the story was told/written. Parts were repetitive and it lacked a much development or anticipation. At times I found it hard to keep reading. It felt monotonous at times. I would have liked to have learned how she ultimately got through college and escaped poverty and had a better life, but it never got to that point.

Maid. A well needed read. Thank you for writing it!

Brava. What a life. Good for you and your daughter and family for survival for tenacity and love.

Excellent and insightful. Should be required reading in all high schools

Donate your money instead of buying this book. Some people have no luck, no choice, ending up in poverty. I truly believe in a social system that supports the poorest and those facing adversities. Yet, there will always be persons with some having a personality disorder who repetitively make bad decisions and blame others for their predicament. Sadly, it might be the case for the author of this book. If you feel that you might want to read this book, please consider donating money to a good charitable organization instead of spending anything on this book.

Inspirational story but WAY too long. It goes without saying that Stephanie Land is remarkable. Her grit and heart are so admirable. She persevered where others might have given up. I am humbled by her story and reminded of the power of a motherā€™s love. For this reason I read the entire 700 page book even though I really could have done without a couple hundred pages of excruciating detail. Itā€™s like going for a quick coffee date with a friend to catch up only to spend 3 hours listening to her talk about her job. A touch tedious. Again, I appreciate Stephanieā€™s struggles and donā€™t want to take anything away from her. Seriously though, 700 pages!
