The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer Book Summary

The New York Times bestseller—for fans of All the Light We Cannot See!

From the bestselling author of Truths I Never Told You, Before I Let You Go, and the The Warsaw Orphan, Kelly Rimmer’s powerful WWII novel follows a woman’s urgent search for answers to a family mystery that uncovers truths about herself that she never expected.

“Fans of The Nightingale and Lilac Girls will adore The Things We Cannot Say.” —Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author

In 1942, Europe remains in the relentless grip of war. Just beyond the tents of the refugee camp she calls home, a young woman speaks her wedding vows. It’s a decision that will alter her destiny…and it’s a lie that will remain buried until the next century.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now fifteen and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate.

Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears. Where Alina used to measure time between visits from her beloved, now she measures the spaces between hope and despair, waiting for word from Tomasz and avoiding the attentions of the soldiers who patrol her parents’ farm. But for now, even deafening silence is preferable to grief.

Slipping between Nazi-occupied Poland and the frenetic pace of modern life, Kelly Rimmer creates an emotional and finely wrought narrative. The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced…and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it.

Don’t miss Kelly Rimmer’s newest novel, The Paris Agent, where a family’s innocent search for answers brings a long-forgotten, twenty-five-year-old mystery featuring two female SOE operatives comes to light!

The Things We Cannot Say. Beautifully written.

The Things We Can Not Say. Very touching toward the end. The characters are well described. It’s not one of those stories you can’t wait to see how it ends, you know before the ending.

Great book. It’s an emotional read. Very well written. The story kept my interest and kept me guessing until the end. Highly recommend.

Beautiful, fascinating, tear jerker. I have not cried this hard reading a book in a long while. This story was enthralling and kept me guessing. The ending was exactly right.

Well written and highly moving story.. I loved everything that I learned in this story and how it affirms love and respect for loved ones that have forged a path for us.

Masterpiece. Profound. Astounding. To mourn and to rejoice.

Things we can not say. Excellent book

The Things We Cannot Say. Excellent book that I could not put down.

I never expected…. To gain personal insight from a book that I thought would simply be a story. It was slow for me at first, as it is not my typical read. However; very shortly I found myself immersed in the history of Alina and empowered by Alice laying down her titles.

Great Book!. A wonderful book! Must read! So interesting and enjoyed the journey! Thanks for this perspective in history! I always have wanted to learn more about my history! As my great grandmother was killed during world war 2. I look forward to soon doing it!

Worth Finishing This Book. The story unfolds slowly and sometimes confusingly. Once the threads are pulled together, this story becomes a beautiful story of love, hope, and discovery. The ending of the book is worth it.

Compelling. One of the best books I’ve ever read. The authors ability to go back in forth in time, the depth of the characters, I felt as if I was seeing it all in my mind. Highly recommend this book!

Amazing!. Amazing

Great book!. This was a wonderful and emotional book to read. It brought home the reality of things people went through and suffered through in Poland leading up to and during WWll. Very well written, I couldn’t put it down! I’ve found a new favorite author, and am starting another book!

Amazing. Very beautiful and touching. Made me sob but it was 100% worth it.

Fantastic. Rarely do I give a book Five Stars. The story is heartbreaking and amazing.

Awesome. One of the most enjoyable books I’ve read. I couldn’t put it down.

Loved this book. I’ve read an other book from this author but I’m starting to really love the depth of heart of these books! I can’t stop now…. Going to her newest book, thank you for writing from your heart and about the heart. Life changing

Love and war :(. A great historical recollection of fierce love and the imminent invasion of Poland during WW2. I was sad reading this but loved the ending! The detail and side-stories all relate to the bigger picture and I like how the integration of two story lines because smoother as the story went on. Would recommend.

The Things We Cannot Say. A must read! The story stays with you long after the book is finished. The WWII facts and present day real life issues make this a memorable story of love, survival and family bonds that can’t be broken.

Life loved cherished. A story well written to explore the impossibilities of history. The resilience of one families heritage, souls past and present.

One of my new favorites !. This is a wonderful historical fiction novel with a twist of mystery!

A Great Story About Resilience Regret and Closure. My mother and grandparents lived in Europe during WW2 and this story brought to life some of the terrible tragedies and heroic efforts to salvage human dignity. The author wrote a wonderful story about family tragedy, honor, and personal growth dealing with challenges.

So-So. Written to hold your attention and you want to read the ending. You know sort of where the story is going.. somewhat of a formula type fiction. Passes the time but you'll forget most of it wit hi n a couple weeks.

SENSATIONAL. This book was absolutely sensational. I was gripped by the details of the lives of each of the characters. Just when I thought I knew how the story would end, I was surprised. This book was so well done! I wish I could go back to the moment I first picked it up, and read it all over again.

The things we cannot say. I couldn’t put it down.

Grab a tissue!!. What a fantastic book! I felt every emotion I have. Please do yourself a favor and read this book! It’s beautiful!!

The Things We Cannot Say. I enjoyed this book mostly because of the historical story, but I also enjoyed the way it switched back and forth from current challenges to WWII trauma.

Enthralling. Couldn’t put down this book! Intertwined lives of two women and a great love story at the heart if it.

Excellent. one of the best books I’ve read; the story it tells is very important and heartfelt.

Things we cannot say. Good story, things like this did happen. Well written.

The things we cannot say. A truly heartwarming book couldn’t put it down

Amazing. Beautiful story. Gently told. I felt like I was there and could feel and understand all the feelings written.

Loved it.. I never wanted this book to end.

Touches your soul. Amazing,heart-wrenching, and exquisitely beautiful.

Riveting. A beautiful heart wrenching love story of family, past and present. A real page turner with all the feels!!

Why just 3 stars. Well written, enjoyable to read, but a little predictable! For me it was a real stretch to believe a 95 year old woman suddenly on her death bed, sends her granddaughter to find the past, with no information except a few names, it’s not realistic. I think it would have been interesting for Amelia in her 70’s or 80’s to tell Alice her story and then ask her to go find out what happened to Thomas and all would have had closure. This could have filled many chapters, and made Alice realize she had more to do, more to give like time to herself. The part where she is consistently ill, was too easy to figure out, and I knew too soon the baby was not his. And once Saul and Amelia were married, the author does not give any information into their marriage except they were friends. There was another good chapter waiting there, how did they live?, for 70 years they were never intimate ?, so no more babies? I have an autistic grandson, and I know there are different levels, but the Alice kept him back, did she need this ? I think she was someone who needed a project and that became her son. I would have enjoyed the book more if the author had addressed these issues.

Touching and well written. I read it in a few days, great love story in the past and modern day couples

Very good. I liked this one a lot. It was a good mystery and just a wonderful story

Loved reading this book. A well written book with an excellent story!

Absolutely. Heartbreaking. Incredible. My eyes could not stay dry. Written so beautifully, tackling so many issues at once; tragedy, family struggles, aging, dying, trauma, community, love. Such a gorgeous and moving historical fiction, very well exemplifying the truth and mourning of such a violent part of history. Thank you for this book, it has moved me unimaginably.

Absolutely Thought Provoking and Engrossing. This book has absolutely held me to my points end bringing me and then down. The conclusion is an honest bittersweet and it is beautiful to read. I have no complaints with this book, none at all. I’ve learned so much about the history in Poland, and much about the History of the world. And I feel as though this is an important read for everyone, not just for the profound story but for the history intertwined.

Just ok. Found the writing a bit simple.

Well worth it. A moving book through generations. This made me appreciate more those that came before me in my family.

The Things We Cannot Say. I picked this book by accident and I’m glad I did. I was sucked in from the beginning and couldn’t put it down. This book reached my very soul. Beautiful story.

The Things We Cannot say. This is a wonderful book. I could not put it down. Highly recommend it.

Excellent book. Loved this book!

Unputdownable!. Wonderfully written. A captivating story that restores a little bit faith in humanity, whilst reminding us of the worst of humanity. And I'm always a fan of a female protagonist. A must read.

Amazing. So beautiful

5 stars. I absolutely loved this book and the style in which it was written. The Alice character was a little too much at times but her perspective was greatly influenced by the trials that she went through with her autistic son. I loved Thomas and Alina. I’ll miss those characters. Just downloaded multiple books by Kelly Rimmer. Five star author.

The things we cannot say. Interesting story line but young naive ramblings throughout. Ending had a twist but predictable.

Beautiful story.. I loved and enjoyed this book a lot It was gentle and exciting at the same time. Very interesting ti have it narrated from two different people living in twin different times.

Best book I’ve read yet. I can’t explain how I feel about this book in short but it left me feeling emotions I didn’t know where there. This is the best book I’ve read.

Great book. Great book to read

Incredibly unlikeable characters. I had to stop reading as I simply could not stand the whiny, entitled Alice character. The other characters all seemed very 2 dimensional and stereotypical.

The Things We Cannot Say. It has been a long time since a book has captured my mind to such an extent as this one. It brought me to tears several times. Couldn’t put it down... Speaking as a grandmother of a child on the autism spectrum- the author’s depiction of Eddie was excellent. The horrors of the Nazi occupation of Poland were unspeakable as the title of the book implies. Read it!

The Things We Can Not Say. The beauty of love is the only thing that can transform the horror of war. An emotional read that highlights the stark realities of past and present day injustices for the Jewish people.
