Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Now a Hulu original series

“If three characters were good in Big Little Lies, nine are even better in Nine Perfect Strangers.” —Lisa Scottoline, The New York Times Book Review

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies

Could ten days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty’s latest page-turner, nine perfect strangers are about to find out...

Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.

Frances Welty, the formerly best-selling romantic novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House nursing a bad back, a broken heart, and an exquisitely painful paper cut. She’s immediately intrigued by her fellow guests. Most of them don’t look to be in need of a health resort at all. But the person that intrigues her most is the strange and charismatic owner/director of Tranquillum House. Could this person really have the answers Frances didn’t even know she was seeking? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in everything Tranquillum House has to offer – or should she run while she still can?

It’s not long before every guest at Tranquillum House is asking exactly the same question.

Combining all of the hallmarks that have made her writing a go-to for anyone looking for wickedly smart, page-turning fiction that will make you laugh and gasp, Liane Moriarty’s Nine Perfect Strangers once again shows why she is a master of her craft.

Not my favorite. I was very disappointed in this one. I have read, and loved every one of her books, and this one just didn’t do it for me.

Better than the show. Not surprising, but better than the show. A little bit heavier and less light hearted, but a good read. You feel attached to each of the characters as you get to know them.

Disappointing. Not what I expected. Nothing like her usual writing. I didn’t like it.

great book. excellent read

Great. Great read. Full of surprises.

My goodness…. This was a must read, I don’t read books often but I can say I read this within two days and could not put it down. I honestly wish there was more of it so I can just envelope myself in this world. Just happy all around, kept me on my toes and I mean I would yell out loud when something serious or unexpected happened. :)

Disappointed. I love this author but this is not her best work. Really hard to get through it - kept hoping it would get better but it did not.

9 thumbs up. Great character development and suspense, couldn’t put it down!

Nine Perfect astrangers. Very disappointing after Big Little Lies

Contrary to apparent popular opinion:. This book was different than Liane’s others, I’ll give the naysayers that. But the embodiment of altering realities and the vividness was insatiable. And being someone who has lost someone to suicide, her telling of the family dynamic and it’s effects was interesting to me because it’s so different for everyone but similar in ways she nailed. Definitely one you can’t put down.

Great concept, enjoyed the twists!. So well written, funny and rich, but lost me a bit at the end.

Never gots going. There should be SOME narrative at the half-way point. I think I’ll quit....

Meh. Was hoping for great, but it was just ok.

Don’t waste your time. Couldn’t finish. Ridiculous story, ridiculous twist. I actually did like some of the characters but couldn’t bring myself to find out what happens to them because the story was so bad.

Jumped the shark. I’ve read all of her books and loved them. But this one jumped the shark.

Nine Perfect Strangers. What. A. Trip. (You'll understand what I mean if you are smart enough to pick up this book) Couldn't put it town. So tantalizingly woven, so heartbreakingly real, these stories of strangers who become bound together for life. LM exposes the human condition with the skill of sushi chef laying out perfectly filleted vegetables (oh, you know what I mean!)

Nine Perfect Strangers. I thought the author did a good job wrapping up the end of her book...

Don’t bother.... I usually love her books but this was not a good read. I found my self scanning over parts, getting annoyed over the unrealistic story line, insipid characters. and repetitive character descriptions. Her worst book to date. Don’t waste your money, or even waste your time to borrow from a friend.

Great book, hurried ending?. I love Liane Moriarty’s books for their pace and suspense; you can never really tell what will happen next. This book didn’t take me long to get sucked into. Halfway though it, though, it almost seem hurried. Things got weird in an unbelievable sense. It was as if Moriarty hit a point in her writing where she thought, ‘I’d better hurry up!” And it got careless. I’d still recommend this book but it did disappoint me towards the end.

Things get weird. I really like this author but this was a strange one. Starts off developing each character, seems like there’s going to be some intriguing breakthrough, but things just get bizarre. Then once the weirdness is over, it just rushes through the end. Don’t want too give too much away so I won’t write more details. Just feel disappointed with this one though. Not one I’d honestly recommend.

Not her best. Still enjoyed it though

Nine Perfect Strangers. It am sorry I have read her other book and like them, but this one, I just wanted it to be over.

Preposterous story and ending. Good character development though.

Great read. Greatly enjoyed this book!

Bizarre health resort. Such a quirky, skillfully told story about nine people who come to this health resort to be transformed. It’s way more than they bargained for, and full of hilarious twists. I laughed and cried....couldn’t stop turning the pages!

Ok. Ehhh, didn't care for the way it was laid out. I'm sorry, but I found it underwhelming.

Great beginning!. In normal Moriarty style, I was completely hooked from the beginning. Her characterisation was great, and it felt like you knew someone like every character you were introduced to. And then... 3/4 through. I stopped believing in the validity of the storyline. It didn’t seem real, not forced, but almost clutching at straws to keep the reader interested in what was happening which didn’t need to happen, her style of writing is so enjoyable. It was still written beautifully, despite the fanciful goings on, and I finished it in two days. But for me, the heart wrenching longing of her previous writing wasn’t there. At the end everything was tied up neatly in a bow, reminiscent of a Kerry Greenwood (I love her books but they are definitely happily ever after) style ending that also didn’t ring true. All in all, a great read, but for me it didn’t live up to her previous victories.

A good read. A crazy spa program leaves the reader wondering just how far they would go to comply when promised transformative results &/or enlightenment.

Nine Perfect Strangers. I’ve read and loved all of Liane Moriarty’s books. This one was truly bad. The more I read, the worse it got. Definitely not worth the time or money.

Dear Reader,. This book will have you clinging to it right until the very end. The characters are realistic yet complex, all unique, making them so human. If you’ve seen the Hulu version I’d say reading this book is great insight. You learn more about each character, and the outcome is different.

Ok read. Like other reviews, it was fine, just not nearly as riveting as some of her other novels. Took quite awhile to get into this one.

Nine Perfect Strangers. I loved it. Very entertaining!

It was ok!. I had really high expectations... I love this author but I’d say this is my least favorite of hers. But people rank it as their first I hear! You have to read it if you’re a true fan of Liane nonetheless 😊

By far one of the best books I’ve read. Such an amazing book.

Ok. It was a fun read, but nothing like her other books. Least favorite of her books.

Odd. It was off. I’ve enjoyed her books in the past, but this was out there. I had a really hard time getting into it, and then found it weird and unbelievable. Disappointing.

An ok read. Good but not great

Hands down 10/10. This book is fantastic. I think if you go into this book expecting it to be like the show, then you should think again. While the characters are majority similar, it feels like the book and the show are two different stories and shouldn’t be compared! Although, it doesn’t take away from how good both are respectively! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the series!

Was just ok.. I was first taken in by the story line. But then it just dragged on and on. Lost interest in it quickly. I did finish it.

Dull. This book didn’t go anywhere.

Fun. A fun summer read.

Awful!. I am a big fan of hers. I couldn’t wait for this book. It was awful. Story and characters are flat. I got 40% through the book and gave up.

Good but not my fav of hers. This book will stay with me because the storyline was unique. Her writing is always good. I didn’t sink into it like her others but I won’t forget the story anytime soon.

Eh….. This might be the one time the movie could be better than the book. I kept thinking the story would get more interesting along the way but it really didn’t. It might help to have the characters come to life with the awesome actors in the movie. I wouldn’t bother with the book though…

I hate this book. Most ridiculous story

Absolutely terrible. Unreadable. I really enjoyed her other books. So sorry that this was published.

Nine Perfect Strangers. I loved this book so much! Laughed out loud several times. Being a health professional myself, I could appreciate the obsessive behaviors that some others in my profession sometimes manifest when working with others. I especially love Frances.

Nine perfect strangers. What a huge disappointment! I even pre-ordered it because I’ve so enjoyed all her other books. Big mistake! I would never recommend this novel to anyone. I’m even hesitant to donate it to the library...

Eh.. just ok. Interesting book but weird plot…

Just awful. I feel really bad writing this bc I love all of this authors other novels... extremely far fetched story, very hard to get through had me saying “ WTH”did I just read?!?”

So disappointed. I am a faithful reader of Moriarity, she is absolutely one of my favourite authors. Trust me, it pains me to say I absolutely disliked this book. The subject, the plot, the characters. There was NOTHING I liked, except perhaps the house setting. It’s like Liane was replaced by a different author. I did recognize her style of writing and her descriptive narrative, but..... this book bombed big time for me. Sadly, I had been waiting so long for her next novel. Very disappointed.

9 perfect strangera. This was another great Moriarity read. Liked the characters, well written, a bit of suspense and the ended rocked!

A-ok. It was an a-ok book easy to read

This one didn’t do much for me. In the beginning I was really enjoying this book but then as the plot twist hit this book got ridiculous. Though this book gives a glimpse into serious mental health and addiction issues it just felt too over the top which didn’t drive the intensity of the issues home. However I really enjoyed Frances character. My heart broke for Marconi family and for Masha and Ben because of the loss they suffered. This one didn’t do much for me.

Great book. The first half of the book has a slow pace, but you know something is coming. This was a very interesting read, definitely worth it! Enjoy.
