Missed opportunity. In general the books are an easy read, but what was set out as a main plot point, Sal’s gender fluid (non-binary) identity, was regulated to a few short, simple passages about expression (dressing as a male or female) that really didn’t give the readers any insight into them or their experience. I was really hoping to leave the books with a better understanding but had to look elsewhere for that. This would have been the perfect opportunity to share the non-binary perspective and experience with a captive audience and educate us, but it slipped away merely hinted at but never truly developed or explored.
Good concept, bad execution. The idea of this story is cool. The worldbuilding, characters, and plot are all very interesting but feel underdeveloped. The writing is very rudimentary, it feels like a abridged version of a longer work. It’s certainly a fine read but I wouldn’t call it the most artistic of novels. If the prose was better this story would be miles more engaging. Very diverse, can’t speak on how well the genderfluidity is represented as I have no experience in that front, but I appreciate the attempt at the very least. There are sparks of something greater in here but overall I’m underwhelmed.
