“Maureen Callahan’s deft reporting and stylish writing have created one of the all-time-great serial-killer books: sensitive, chilling, and completely impossible to put down.” —Ada Calhoun, author of St. Marks Is Dead

Ted Bundy. John Wayne Gacy. Jeffrey Dahmer. The names of notorious serial killers are usually well-known; they echo in the news and in public consciousness. But most people have never heard of Israel Keyes, one of the most ambitious and terrifying serial killers in modern history. The FBI considered his behavior unprecedented. Described by a prosecutor as "a force of pure evil," Keyes was a predator who struck all over the United States. He buried "kill kits"--cash, weapons, and body-disposal tools--in remote locations across the country. Over the course of fourteen years, Keyes would fly to a city, rent a car, and drive thousands of miles in order to use his kits. He would break into a stranger's house, abduct his victims in broad daylight, and kill and dispose of them in mere hours. And then he would return home to Alaska, resuming life as a quiet, reliable construction worker devoted to his only daughter.

When journalist Maureen Callahan first heard about Israel Keyes in 2012, she was captivated by how a killer of this magnitude could go undetected by law enforcement for over a decade. And so began a project that consumed her for the next several years--uncovering the true story behind how the FBI ultimately caught Israel Keyes, and trying to understand what it means for a killer like Keyes to exist. A killer who left a path of monstrous, randomly committed crimes in his wake--many of which remain unsolved to this day.

American Predator is the ambitious culmination of years of interviews with key figures in law enforcement and in Keyes's life, and research uncovered from classified FBI files. Callahan takes us on a journey into the chilling, nightmarish mind of a relentless killer, and to the limitations of traditional law enforcement.

Couldn’t Put it Down. Great book. I couldn’t stop reading it even though it was disturbing me to the core.

American Predator. Absolutely fantastic book, Israel Keyes was a terrifying killer who knew how to avoid the mainstream media and stay off the grid. Really awesome book on a lesser known serial killer. A must read for any true crime fan!

At the edge of my seat!. This book threw many curve balls and once you thought you understood what happened we find out that there’s more. There’s always more even when there couldn’t possibly be more. 10/10 all around! Very well put together and very informative. I think I learned a lot!

Very Tough Subject Matter. I don’t think I knew what I was reading….I finished it in half of a day. Just weird, really weird.

Intriguing. Very well written I was captivated from page one.

American Predator. The worst book I ever read, bar none. The author is an idiot. It meanders and ends nowhere…

Don’t review irrelevant aspects. Someone wrote on the review that the book was inaccurate because the coffee stores, the area and the snow drifts weren’t described correctly. This is known as the writer’s imagination and it’s done in every single book including “true crime” when the author has writing ability. Also to describe the exact area as if one is writing a book report typically comes off robotic Book was good. Kept me interested. I have some knowledge of crimes. I’ve researched these. The relevant aspects were well researched and accurate

Fantastic. This book was fantastic from the 1st page to the last.

July 26th, 2019. This would better as a TV show or a documentary. The description of Alaskan culture sounds sensationalized.

Phenomenal book. For anyone that enjoys true crime this is a must read. It turns all the profiling and criminal science on its ear. Really well written and truly scary individual.

True Life Horror!. This book is evidence that monsters are real. This book is well researched, fascinating, horrific, all the while maintaining a excellent tempo. Well done. I highly recommend it.

Impossible to put down. A captivating story that had me hooked right away. Crazy that not too many people are aware of what happened! A definite must-read!!

Captivating. I rarely read books, however I did first see about this case on YouTube and was surprised to see a book written on this case. I was taken back at how this book kept me reeled in page by page despite not having picked up a non-fiction literature specifically for years. Extremely captivating and exciting book, and the absolute most informative source I’ve ever found on Israel Keyes despite going thru pages on the internet.

Gruesome. Compelling story. Such an evil man it was hard to read. Frustrating that the FBI couldn’t extract more info from him.

Wonderful. I’ve never heard of Israel Keyes. I’m so glad I read this book. It is definitely a page turner! Extremely well written. I’ve not read a true crime book in a few years. Now I’m going to start again. I highly, highly recommend this book.

Savage!!!. Amazing story that kept leaving me wanting more. Perfectly written. It put you in those interrogation rooms with this monster. Great story, great author!

Worth every cent. I loved this book from beginning to end. I couldn’t put it down. I love how the interviews were a part of the book! Great read during Covid

Great. Awesome book!! Loved it!!

Amateurish cliched writing. Made it through 100 pages only. Skip it

Good read!!. I’ve never heard of Israel Keyes before reading this book. Scary to think that there are people in the world like him. I looked forward to reading each chapter and was shocked at how detailed he was in his planning.

Title is accurate.. Gripping from the start to the end. I wish this were a fictional story.

A Case I’ve Never Heard Of That Blew My Mind. Whoa..🤯 Twists and turns on every page. Never hard of this man and his crimes. I found the writing to be so intriguing and I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the interrogations and interviews.

Fantastic Read!. Very informative book on Israel Keyes!! I knew very little about him until I was recommended this book! A must read for true crime aficionados!

Murderino Must-Read. While I had heard of Israel Keyes from the true crime podcasts, this book kept me turning the page until I devoured it all. I felt like the author wrote each chapter with gripping detail that made me feel like an FBI agent sitting in the interrogation room. I would highly recommend reading this book if you love true crime or are just fascinated by serial killers. Keyes is like no other.

Disturbing. This guy was insane. If you want an in depth look into one of America’s pre eminent serial killers, this book is for you. It makes me wonder if we will ever truly know the full extent of his killing career.

Tenacity & Grit Level: Expert. I’m in the midst of remodeling my home and still couldn’t put this book down. The author has my sincere awe. Battling corruption & cover ups in Court to bring light to this evil and tell this story shows dedication to the truth & transparency. The writer is respectful of the families of victims. The rubberneck part of me wants to know all the gory details, but a bigger part of me admires her integrity & craft to gently & subtly guide us to the macabre without leaving us feeling dirty. A class act. I could spend another hour writing about the masterful prose, sensitivity to the subject, detailed research and so on, but my remodel is behind schedule now (worth it!) so please just read this book. Then sit & contemplate the monumental feat that you just witnessed within the pages. Bravo!

Gripping read!. Edge of my seat the entire time! I found myself being so astonished chapter after chapter! Don’t hesitate to buy this!

Completely inaccurate from the first paragraph. I wanted to buy this book as I just saw a brief documentary about the book and the Israel Key case, but the first paragraph is so completely inaccurate I have serious reservations about it. How do I know? I lived in Anchorage for more than 10 years, and I was there when the murder of Samantha went down. The coffee stand is called Common Grounds, on Tudor Road (630 E Tudor Rd, Anchorage, AK 99503), I’ve driven past it countless times. The area is primarily industrial, there are (or were at the time) not any so called big box stores anywhere near it. Furthermore, Anchorage usually does not get enough snowfall at one time to create “drifts” that would (or did at that time) obscure the shop from being clearly visible from the road. The snow plows do occasionally pile up snow but it is removed fairly regularly. If the author wishes to so overly dramatize the opening paragraph rendering it factually inaccurate, what other liberties may have been taken to sensationalize the rest of the story? Hard pass on this one.

So intense. This true crime story is one of the most riveting tales of pure terror I have read in years.Just reading this story had me pausing to catch my breath by the non-stop rollercoaster ride I was so skillfully put on. I highly recomend this shocking yet amazing and fast moving ride.
