The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER |  A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

“A great narrative about personal strength and really captures how books bring communities together.” —Reese Witherspoon

From the author of the forthcoming Someone Else’s Shoes, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond in Depression-era America

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve, hoping to escape her stifling life in England.  But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity, and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic--a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

I’m a fan.. Jojo Moyes is a fantastic writer. It was a pleasure reading this story. I want to read some of her other books.

The giver of stars. A great story!

Powerful. What a beautifully written book. It has love, friendship, murder, etc. I never knew of the Kentucky library system and the work that was done to spread literacy into the harder to reach and more rural areas. So beautifully written and so glad Reese witherspoon book club suggested it!

Beautiful. This book changed my life!

Lovely. Lovely book. Thanks

Unique and absolutely wonderful!. I rarely give 5 star ratings but this book is refreshing and awesome! It is written so well that the reader feels like he or she is right alongside the characters in a true life journey through history. Highly recommend!

Really great story. Read this for good feelings

The Giver of Stars. An authentic telling of life in a small Kentucky town! The protagonists were all women and each had an unforgettable journey of living each day in this environment! They had romances, trials & trails to deal with their buddies supporting them! This is also the telling of how the town dealt with it’s first library & it’s female custodians!

Beautifully written. I enjoyed every minute of it and didn’t want it to end.

Enjoyable and informative. I appreciated knowing about this important program begun by Eleanor Roosevelt. The author used that background to create a fascinating and touching story.

The Giver of Stars. Reads like an old romance novel, if you like that type of literature. Characters are one dimensional. Can't finish it.

Powerful women. Even when I wasn’t reading, I found myself wondering what challenges the powerful women, Margery, Alice and all the others would face, and how they would resolve their problems. The characters came alive to me.

Great read. Excellent story based in history

Horrible. This may be the worst book I ever read.

Great book!. Floods, trials, and despair all wrapped up in an entertaining story. I enjoyed the characters. Tears shed.

Giver of stars. This book is plagiarized from a book published a few months before this one was published - the blue woman of troublesome creek. Shame on you Jojo.

Truly delightful. This was a wonderful story of women working together as part of the WPA Packhorse Library program in the 1930’s in a small Kentucky mining town. The friendships and struggles they endured were moving and empowering. An entirely worthwhile read!

Pls help!. I wanted this to be read to me (I.e. audiobook) but it requires me to read it. How do I ‘return’ this purchase?

The giver of stars. Excellent read!

The Giver of Stars. Jojo Moyes’s characters always ring true. The Giver of Stars is a beautiful story and all who read it will recognize the gift of books as one of the most important gifts to humans everywhere.

The giver of stars. What a wonderfully amazing story of women and hard times

A must read!. Excellent character growth and historical Lu significant for today !

Best book I’ve read this year. This was one I was sad when it was over. I absolutely loved the characters and everything about it. I had a busy week and still somehow managed to read this in a few day’s because I couldn’t put it down.

Stingy With My Stars. I very rarely give a 5 star rating, but this book hit most of my favorite highs: history, romance, suspense, and strong female characters. I had never heard of the WPA’s Packhorse Librarians, and the story was wonderful!

Giver of Stars. Excellent book. Wonderful character development.

The giver of stars.. So well written. A page turner. Interesting and informative. Based on a true story.

One of the best books I’ve ever read!. One of the best books I’ve ever ever read

Kentucky mountain life. This is an eye opener concerning the life in small town and countryside Kentucky.

The Giver of Stars. Amazing read.

Couldn’t put it down!. What a beautiful adventure! Loved it.

Slow start. Great read after.. The beginning was very slow. Once the story line really picked up, it was great. I loved learning about the packhorse librarians during the depression. I wasn’t aware of them until this book. Amazing women.

Beth. Absolutely the best book!!! I couldn’t put it down! I laughed and cried and loved these strong women fiercely!

Great Read!. I could not put this book down. Beautifully written, lavish imagery, and a satisfying ending. One of the best books I have read in a long time!

Wonderful. From opening page to the words on the final page, the book captures and holds one’s attention. The characters are genuine and colored with personality. I didn’t want the book to end, Always a good sign!

The Giver of Stars. Beautifully written about a slice of little known American history. The decription of eastern rural Kentucky mountains in the 1930’s made you feel like you were right there with the characters and their pack animals as these women delivered their library books to the rural inhabitants. I couldn’t put it down. An excellent pick for our bookclub!

Historical fiction that tugs at your emotions. Loved the way this book brought out so many different feelings and emotions. It was an easy read and very enjoyable book. Highly recommend.

Rural Kentucky, Feisty Women, Traveling Libraries - Fascinating!. A well crafted story of rural Kentucky built around a little known government program in the 1930s that used small traveling libraries to promote literacy. But that hardly does this novel justice. Because it’s about so much more. Alice Van Cleve is a young, English woman who marries the son of a wealthy American coal mine tycoon, to escape her too-proper life and critical parents. Alice and Bennett settle into her father-in-law’s home in rural Kentucky. Although her home life turns our disappointing, Alice soon volunteers for the fledgling library program where she meets a small group of disparate women who slowly become a tight circle of friends. One is Margery O’Hare - a gutsy mid-thirties single woman who speaks her mind, flaunts the conventions of society, and is even more interesting a character than Alice. There’s also a young woman whose polio disability and overprotective mother have closed down her life. A tomboy eager for time away from an all-male household. And a quiet, dignified black woman who knows much more about libraries than all the others put together. But the story is less about the library program itself than about the lives of women in rural America in the 1930s. The deeply ingrained expectations that shape their lives, the limitations imposed by a conservative society, and the consequences — both good and bad — when women begin to behave more independently. The story is also set against the growing labor movement in America. The Van Cleve mines — with their sub-standard housing, over-priced company store, and unsafe mining conditions — are relentless in their efforts to resist unionization. And like many men with money and power, Mr. Van Cleve expects (demands!) to get his way in all areas of his life. Especially dangerous in someone who so fiercely holds grudges. It’s a suspenseful read, with unexpected twists and turns. And yet, there is also a central love story that is tender and lovely. A well-executed historical novel that will show you a slice of historical America you've probably never seen.

Fantastic Book and Writing Style. Fabulous- I could not put the book down. A wonderful read that I was able to highlight my vacation with.

Excellent. Very unique characters and story line. Beautifully written and moving.

So so. I felt the book was interesting but some aspects a bit far fetched. A book as a murder weapon and the man had a gun?

A book about books. I love books about women, nature, love, tragedy, and books. This was a perfectly written story.

Mesmerizing book!. I COULD NOT PUT DOWN this delightful book. I loved the characters, the setting, the creation of friendships and loyalty, the sheer bravery, and the growth of love. For anyone who enjoys a good story told by a skillful storyteller, READ THIS IMMEDIATELY!

Excellent book!. Great story! I loved learning about the packhorse librarians.

Excellent!. A great book.

Page Turner!!. I loved the pace, setting & detailed descriptions of the challenges that faced each character & watching their evolutions but most of all, I just fell in love with the main characters in this wonderful novel. I enjoyed being sent back in time and to a place where life was slower and nature was fully appreciated but it also made me thankful of the rights I enjoy as a “modern woman” in present time! This was chosen as a Book Club book and I enthusiastically give up 2 thumbs up!!! What an enjoyable read!!

Great read. Loved the story. Great ending. Women helping women.

Fascinating. This book opened up a subject that I didn’t know existed. I live across the Ohio River in Cincinnati and it gave a whole new meaning to the mountains of Kentucky. These brave women did a noble deed of trying to bring books and knowledge to people who might otherwise be forgotten.

Mesmerizing. This mesmerizing story accurately reflects the 1930s in Appalachia country, especially in the areas of religion, poverty, women’s rights, domestic abuse, the mistreatment of African Americans, and the coal industry. The story of female friendship was heartwarming. I was saddened when I finished this story because I didn’t want it to end!

The Giver of Stars. This is an interesting well written book. It will make a good movie.

Great Read. Loved this story of friendship and family. Fast read hard to put down!
