The Road Leads Back

The Road Leads Back by Marci Bolden Book Summary

Sometimes the only place left to go is home.

Kara Martinson always thought her high school crush was out of her league, but they did share one night she’s never been able to forget. Nearly three decades after being disowned by her parents and forced to raise her son on her own, Kara’s made it—her art is being toasted at a gallery opening. Even better, she and her son are finally on stable ground. Until Mr. One-Night Stand himself crashes her party.

Harry Canton always knew Kara would make it as an artist. Almost thirty years after high school, he still considers her the one that got away. But the surprise reunion doesn’t quite go to plan when Harry discovers he left her with more than just memories when he went away to college. Desperate to connect with the family he never knew existed, Harry convinces his son to move cross country for a fresh start with his father—and pleads with Kara to come home, too.

Kara hasn’t stepped foot in their hometown since the day she was sent away. But her son desperately wants the father he never had and denying him that may cost her everything. Can love heal old heartaches so Harry and Kara can have a second chance at the future they were robbed of so long ago? Or will the pain of the past be too much to face?

I made it halfway through and gave up. Lots of boring exposition, saying the same things over and over. Characters are flat and colorless. Don’t waste your time thinking it is going to get better.

- Happily ever after tale with some distress4 star

HEA stories are not my favorite but this one sucked me in by being about a young woman ejected from her home and family by an unexpected pregnancy bu being given succor in a modified commune in Oregon. Is gets complicated from there but is entertaining with it.

- Tears5 star

A real tear jerker! I felt for all the characters.

- It’s ok3 star

The first half of the book was good. But towards the end Kara became this “why me boo,hoo why me “ weak woman . Pull up your big girl pants and get over it. It’s not all about you you have a kid, think of him. Like I said it was a ok book

Nice story shows that time can heal a lot of wounds

- Wow5 star

What a super pack of emotions in this book. I don’t think there was one human emotion that wasn’t felt and dealt with. Kara was one broken but tough human being and some readers will say she is the heroine in this book. She is a heroine, but the one I think is truly the hero was Harry. He was the nucleus, the rock and her grounding man. I loved this book!!!

I loved this story! Not many romances have older main characters. The characters were fully fleshed out and very believable. I would recommend this book as a great read.

This story captivated me in the first few pages and kept me there until the end! All of the main characters are so fully developed as unique individuals and the family emotions are wonderfully described. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read Phil’s story next. Thank you Marci Bolden.

- Beautiful Romance5 star

Ok people. You HAVE to read this book. And have some tissues close by. And a dose of self-righteous anger. Because this book will bring all those emotions out. At the end though, it brings out the smiles and happiness because who wouldn’t love a story about two high school kids who reconnect after 27 years to bring their family together. Add in a cute little girl with downs and it couldn’t have more perfect.

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were great, even the parents who really were selfish and short sighted. Strongly recommend reading!

- “The road leads back” by Marci Bolden5 star

I almost stopped reading this book when I realized it wasn’t the usual kind of romance I was expecting. I’m so glad I continued reading. I can’t imagine the resentment, guilt and hate Kara, Harry and Phil feel at having 26 years taken away from them. How can they forge ahead? What they each have to go through seems insurmountable. EVERYONE has to find a new normal. I liked that a heartfelt apology didn’t just fix everything and make it better. It’s realistic that their hurt would flair up every so often and they’d lash out. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. Kara trying to figure out WHO she is and what SHE wants as opposed to being JUST a mother is a journey most women have to face. Given the length of the book, the author did an AMAZING job of handling such a tough issue. Happily ever after are given to us, they have to be worked at. Life is a work in progress.

- The Road Back4 star

This book deals incredibly well with human emotions, enabling the reader to identify and reassess their own issues. It insightfully covers a whole gamut of family and relationship issues, providing sound advice for resolving problems. I bookmarked many sentences that spoke deeply to me. Thank you for such a treasure

This is an outstanding story. I would definitely give many more than 5 stars if I could. I was absolutely hooked from beginning to end. “The Road Leads Back” tells the story ofHarrison, Kara, Phil and Jessica. Harrison is a man who runs his family business. Kara is an artist, a free spirit, with a grown son and an adorable granddaughter, who has Down’s Syndrome. Harrison is in Seattle for a conference, sees a flyer for an Art exhibition for a girl he went to school with. An innocent meeting to touch base with ‘the one who got away and totally disappeared of the face of the earth’. Kara doesn’t really fit the Mold of your typical artist, she’s a single Mum and Grandma who has struggled since her son was born and has been bartering for goods and services since he was a baby. This book follows the reconnection of Kara and Harry 27 years since they’d last seen each other. Marci Bolden’s writing style allowed me to see the story rather than just read a series of words. I felt happy, angry, hopeful, fearful and frustrated. I laughed and I cried. Honestly, I could not put this book down, I just had to know what was going to happen next. Please, do yourself a favour, read this book A.S.A.P., I guarantee you’ll love it as much as I did. Meanwhile, I’m off to read more from Marci Bolden, I just can’t wait to see what’s next! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
