Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren Book Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners and the “delectable, moving” (Entertainment Weekly) My Favorite Half-Night Stand comes a modern love story about what happens when your first love reenters your life when you least expect it…

Sam Brandis was Tate Jones’s first: Her first love. Her first everything. Including her first heartbreak.

During a whirlwind two-week vacation abroad, Sam and Tate fell for each other in only the way that first loves do: sharing all of their hopes, dreams, and deepest secrets along the way. Sam was the first, and only, person that Tate—the long-lost daughter of one of the world’s biggest film stars—ever revealed her identity to. So when it became clear her trust was misplaced, her world shattered for good.

Fourteen years later, Tate, now an up-and-coming actress, only thinks about her first love every once in a blue moon. When she steps onto the set of her first big break, he’s the last person she expects to see. Yet here Sam is, the same charming, confident man she knew, but even more alluring than she remembered. Forced to confront the man who betrayed her, Tate must ask herself if it’s possible to do the wrong thing for the right reason… and whether “once in a lifetime” can come around twice.

With Christina Lauren’s signature “beautifully written and remarkably compelling” (Sarah J. Maas, New York Times bestselling author) prose and perfect for fans of Emily Giffin and Jennifer Weiner, Twice in a Blue Moon is an unforgettable and moving novel of young love and second chances.

Another Christina Lauren hit!. I really enjoyed the story, but I wish it was a little more detailed at some points. It felt kind of rushed sometimes, but it is a cute love story, of “coming of age love”.

Couldn’t put it down!. Great book! I was hooked with the twists and turns ... I couldn’t put it down. I kept wanting more!!

Second chance romance with a twist. Twice In A Blue Moon starts out as a really sweet romance. Tate and Sam meet as teens while both are on vacation in London each with a grandparent. They immediately connect and find ways to be alone together, get to know each other and share their private selves. Their split is sudden and comes with a heartbreaking betrayal that sends Tate’s life off in a new, unexpected and unplanned direction. “It’s not like you won’t be disappointed regardless if nothing happens. I don’t know why people think permanent denial is better than temporary disappointment.” I loved the sweet romance between Tate and Sam. I really enjoyed the slow way that the time between their split and their reunion is eventually revealed and the twists involved. #NetGalley #TwiceInABlueMoon -4 Stars!-

Loved but needed more. I loved this story but seriously needed like 5 more chapters. I don’t think the ending did their relationship justice. I loved them together and needed more.

Must read. Such a great read! It’s been a while since I lost myself the whole day in a good romance book

Meh. This book makes me a little angry, because it could have been so much more. The characters had moments of depth that made me want to know them better, but that never happened. Everything felt very rushed - especially the ending, which gave the reader almost nothing. Combine that with how sloppily researched it was (cow tipping is not a real thing, that’s not how making scratch art works, and almost everything about how the table read was presented was completely wrong) and it just feels like very lazy writing. The three stars are for what this book had the POTENTIAL to be.

I love a good heartache! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic's Read. I love a good heartache! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic's Read Sam and Tate's Journey into love is not an easy one. It's filled so much wonder, intrigue and heartache. Tate takes a chance at trusting this man with her desires, heart and body for the first time in her life, then experiences the crushing heartache of betrayal from him. When she see's him more than ten years later she is rocked to her core. You can feel that with one look that he still wants her, but she does not know if she can trust him. She feels pulled to him thru the entire story, has so many conflicting emotions. Will hearing his side of the story change everything for her? Her heart still belongs to this man. I loved that we felt the same conflicting feelings as the characters. This was an amazing story.

So charming!. Such a lovely story. I loved the characters! Christina Lauren never disappoints

Good Read. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and overall recommend, but the ending seemed awfully abrupt to me. I felt disappointed, thinking, “That’s it? What about (XYZ)? What about (ABC)?” I would definitely read it again, but I also definitely deducted a star for that ending.

A tad bit boring.... I love everything Christina Lauren and was greatly looking forward to this book, but I have to admit, it just didn’t captivate. The plot was kind of subpar, the characters were kind of boring, and it just felt incomplete. Usually I fall in love with at least one character in one of their stories, but I couldn’t really find anyone to like in this one. Overall, just okay.

WOW JUST WOW. These women just know how to write man. I loved this book so much! I wish I hadn’t read it yet so I can experience it all over again. You feel for Tate and everything she endures through the book, but you know Sam and her have that crazy love that goes deep. Definitely recommend.

Love CLo but.... I’ve been reading CLo since Chloe and Bennett were first introduced in the Beautiful series. I love them, and look forward to reading their books, but their writing style has changed considerably over the years. I read this book in one sitting. I enjoyed it, but felt let down by the final third of the book. I needed Sam to do more wooing, and make more of an effort to win Tate back, especially given the betrayal. I felt like CLo missed the mark by not giving them more time to develop their relationship as adults (without the cast and crew watching). Likewise, how could Tate, once she realized the author of the screenplay, not instantly connect the script to Sam’s life? CLo have a gift for swoonworthy steam a la the Beautiful and Wild Seasons series. I hope they will revisit that writing style at some point.

So so. Too much voice in the head not enough meaningful dialogue. Had some good moments but I found myself fast forwarding the pages, a lot of the pages felt like noise. Sorry Christina and Lauren, I will still consider buy your books but this one is not a keeper for me. Not worth the 8.99 price

I couldn’t put it down!. It’s such a cute story! Read it on two days!

Sobbing, I’m so lonely. Sobbing on my back porch while finishing this one. A mixture of knowing the end is coming and also just pure sadness bc I’ve never had a “love” like Tate and Sam! This is my third re-read of this book and I love it so much more this time around, probably bc I’m sequestering into my mid-twenties alone while everyone around me is engaged or married or or getting a divorce (?!?). 10/10 would(will) read it again!

Nice second chance romance. Tate Jones and Sam Brandis meet when traveling with their respective grandparents to London. They fall in love, but Sam disappears and betrays Tate in a very public way. Fourteen years later, Tate is a rising movie star and is arriving on the set of the movie that may take her career to Oscar level heights. Of course, as she walks onto the location, there is Sam, the writer of the screenplay for the movie. I loved the opening act of this book, the slow buildup to that first great love of Tate’s live. While the betrayal is pretty bad, there are enough breadcrumbs payed out that you can guess why Sam did what he did. What I had some problems with was the second part of the story. I thought parts of the second half were rushed and glossed over. If you a fan of second chance romance, you will enjoy this book. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.

Emotional!. This was a lot heavier than I was expecting from this author duo. Everything I've read up to this point have been Romcoms. This one will really pull on your emotions. I viewed this more as a woman's fiction story instead of a romance. Only because it wasn't the romance that was the draw for me this time. Tate's character is what really had me pulled into this story. Tate has lived a very sheltered life, falls in love for the first time at eighteen years old, only to be immediately betrayed by that love. Tate’s struggle after that betrayal had a domino affect in her life. In fact it seems a lot of the women in this book have dealt with similar betrayal. It’s hard not to be effected by what they all have been through. When we first meet Sam, I adored him. His betrayal hit hard and felt morally wrong no matter the good reason he had to do it. I never really recovered the romance in the story after that. Part of that is I also didn't feel that Sam every truly earned her love back. Usually this would ruin a book for me, but I actually still very much enjoyed this book. That really says something about the writing if I can overlook the lack of romance that I initially read the story for. This is why it came off more as a womens fiction book. I really am a fan of the writing from this author duo. I think I could enjoy anything they write. I look forward to what they bring us next.

Strong start, lackluster resolution.. I feel like the ending was a bit rushed. There was so much build up from the conflict and the resolution just fell flat. There was barely any story to them making up, especially considering how hurt Tate was for so many years! Sam didn’t have to do much to get her back. It all happened so quickly. On a positive note, the early chapters of them in London were great! I loved the development there. I wish that energy had been kept through the ending, though.

Favorite CLo book yet!. Just finished this book in one sitting (at 4am!!). I’m still swooning and so sad it’s over - I think the story line and characters are the best of the CLo books yet (and yes, I have read all of them, some twice) I literally love Tate and Sam! #tateandsam4ever

Free-Range, Bottomless Love. There is just something about young love that gets me every time. The giddy feeling and invincible hopefulness that only first love can create. Second chance romances that start like this are always my catnip. Twice in a Blue Moon definitely delivers on this (as well as on the forced proximity trope), but I wouldn't necessarily classify this book as a romance. It certainly has romantic elements and a large part of the story focuses on romantic love, but an equally large part focuses on the love of family (blood related and not) and the sacrifices and lengths we will go for those we love. I really enjoyed seeing Sam and Tate's relationship begin and how the whirlwind of young love consumes them. The chapters in the past were written so beautifully that I couldn't help but be swept up in their love too. It was so relatable and Christina Lauren captured the excitement, uncertainty, and wonder of first love so well. Just as quickly as it begins though, it all comes crashing down. 14 years pass before the stars realign for Sam and Tate and circumstances push them together again. The connection they shared all those years ago is just as strong and I liked how they were able to get to know these older and somewhat wiser versions of each other. There are some wonderful (and not so wonderful) secondary characters in the book, specifically Charlie, Marco, and Ian. Charlie is the BFF we all wish we had and Marco is the rock that will see you through anything. Ian was perfectly despicable and the fact that I wanted to throttle him several times in the book shows how well written his character was. The ending of the book felt a little rushed and my greedy heart really wanted an epilogue, but I loved how the story came full circle. Twice in a Blue Moon left me smiling ear to ear. *I voluntarily read an advance review copy of this book*

Always love this writing duo, but.... I really enjoyed this book. The story line was interesting and unlike other romance novels, not entirely “see through” and predictable. Loved all of the characters and their ability to make the story unique and enjoyable. The reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars was because of the ending. I expected to get more answers, but was left with too many questions about what happens next. I was captivated by these characters and their story, and left feeling like I missed out on their final chapters. It just ended so abruptly. All in all, I believe this was worth the read, but be prepared to make up your own ending for Tate and Sam.
