Robin DiAngelo has worked as a diversity trainer for corporations for many years. Over time, she began to see patterns in how white people responded when asked to confront the issue of racism. In order to maintain our image of ourselves as good people, even the discussion of racism raises feelings of discomfort, defensiveness, and anger. This is where she coined the term “white fragility.” Our carefully constructed selves lash out at the suggestion that racism is a systemic part of our society, and something that needs to be examined continually over our lifetimes. Only “bad people” are racist, and we are not bad people! That examination would necessitate the admission of white privilege. DiAngelo argues that White Fragility protects our self-serving interests and prevents us from entering into meaningful dialogue about racism in America today.
