So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo Book Summary

In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Ijeoma Oluo offers a revelatory examination of race in America

Protests against racial injustice and white supremacy have galvanized millions around the world. The stakes for transformative conversations about race could not be higher. Still, the task ahead seems daunting, and it’s hard to know where to start. How do you tell your boss her jokes are racist? Why did your sister-in-law hang up on you when you had questions about police reform? How do you explain white privilege to your white, privileged friend?

In So You Want to Talk About Race, Ijeoma Oluo guides readers of all races through subjects ranging from police brutality and cultural appropriation to the model minority myth in an attempt to make the seemingly impossible possible: honest conversations about race, and about how racism infects every aspect of American life.

"Simply put: Ijeoma Oluo is a necessary voice and intellectual for these times, and any time, truth be told." ―Phoebe Robinson, New York Times bestselling author of You Can't Touch My Hair

Necessary. To the person who wondered why “this garbage was in the personal finance and business section” in another review—I don’t want to work in your place of business. Business is about people. People have racial identities. We all need to become educated about racism and learn how to address it in the workplace, along with everywhere else in life. This book helps. And FYI—ignoring it and pretending it doesn’t exist just because it doesn’t happen to you doesn’t “address it”.

Talk about race.. No one really wants to talk about race. As soon as you bring facts and stats to it you get called a racist.

Ok...so you got my attention, but. Page one was a turn off! What about a self identity crisis is based on racism? While I am not a black woman I did experience all of the issues the writer faced. Clothes that didn’t fit my body, not being considered magazine beautiful, being too loud and opinionated. Not getting those jobs I wanted and others being hired. Why are these problems your race? Everyone has them, not just POC, especially if you are from lower to middle class incomes. There are bars and neighborhoods in my area I wouldn’t feel comfortable in.. GET OVER YOURSELVES PEOPLE.

To quote spongebob. Am I a pretty white supremacist? Because I’m white people also watch that episode

Why?. Tell me, how is this garbage in the business & personal finance section?

I found this to be a necessary read for all... I found this to be a excellent read.

Making money from the biggest lie of the century.. Systemic racism does not exist. I am not planning to read this book.

Cool Heads Prevail. Actually read it(till the end), because it’s probably not what you assumed it would be during the first few chapters.

Amazing fundamental and guideline. I have been blown away what I have learned of the constant systematic racism. I love how how Ijeoma provide guideline to move the needle. Thank

Expertly written. She has such a clear and concise manner that makes her work so easy to enjoy and to explain to others! I appreciate how skillfully she used her personal anecdotes to illustrate larger trends and how graceful she was about “sharing the spotlight” by honoring people who helped her on her own Anti-Racist journey. She’s an excellent wordsmith and I cannot recommend her enough!

Those who care, read. If you are interested in race, talking about race, learning about current events, and seeing the world from a non-white perspective, read on. It might get uncomfortable sometimes, but that’s part of learning.

It was ok. It had some points.

The harsh medicine White America needs. Quick lean read, with a heavy hitting and appropriate message for anyone who checks the white box on their census. Buying in particular during the mass uprisings for justice in May 2020, support Black businesses and creators.

A must read!!. Are you interested in ending racism? Then this is a book to start with. Don’t get comfortable, you have work to do.

No thanks. More racist nonsense hiding behind a glass door.

Incredibly informative. Absolutely incredible read on how to approach the conversation of race in America. Educational, informative, and empowering. I highly recommend.

Racism should end — not like this. Racism should end just as much as the “antidote” this book offers. Judging black people by the amount of melanin in their skin is just as bad as judging white people by that factor. I’m multiracial — black, white, and Native American — and I think all multiracial people are evidence that skin color itself has no objective moral aspect.
