Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An unflinching examination of how our drinking culture hurts women and a gorgeous memoir of how one woman healed herself.”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Untamed

“You don’t know how much you need this book, or maybe you do. Either way, it will save your life.”—Melissa Hartwig Urban, Whole30 co-founder and CEO

The founder of the first female-focused recovery program offers a groundbreaking look at alcohol and a radical new path to sobriety.

We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

When Holly Whitaker decided to seek help after one too many benders, she embarked on a journey that led not only to her own sobriety, but revealed the insidious role alcohol plays in our society and in the lives of women in particular. What’s more, she could not ignore the ways that alcohol companies were targeting women, just as the tobacco industry had successfully done generations before. Fueled by her own emerging feminism, she also realized that the predominant systems of recovery are archaic, patriarchal, and ineffective for the unique needs of women and other historically oppressed people—who don’t need to lose their egos and surrender to a male concept of God, as the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous state, but who need to cultivate a deeper understanding of their own identities and take control of their lives. When Holly found an alternate way out of her own addiction, she felt a calling to create a sober community with resources for anyone questioning their relationship with drinking, so that they might find their way as well. Her resultant feminine-centric recovery program focuses on getting at the root causes that lead people to overindulge and provides the tools necessary to break the cycle of addiction, showing us what is possible when we remove alcohol and destroy our belief system around it.

Written in a relatable voice that is honest and witty, Quit Like a Woman is at once a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol in order to live our best lives without the crutch of intoxication. You will never look at drinking the same way again.

Helped change my life!. This was the most true and inspiring book on alcohol I’ve read. I’ve bookmarked and taken screenshots of many pages that help remind me why I don’t want to drink. It truly changed my perspective and I’ve been able to quit drinking and actually love the process. I didn’t think that was possible. Please read this if you are even contemplating quitting drinking.

Great read. Loved this book! Goes beyond those that just want to become sober. Speaks on social justice, activism, the patriarchy and mental health. Holly is so raw, informative, funny and relatable. I even gained a lot of other resources from this book. Recommend for anyone, sober or not.

Quit Like. Woman. Thank you.

Too political. I LOVE the title and the idea behind the book but she completely smothers the reader by forcing her political agendas in this book. I didn’t buy a book to hear about feminism or her hate for Trump.

Missed opportunity to connect with ALL women. Blaming conservative politics for a life filled with bad choices and debauchery isn’t what I expected. The story started off great and took a turn into a leftist victimhood political rant. Missed an opportunity to connect with all women. I don’t recommend this book at all

INCREDIBLE!. What an amazing book...I don’t know how else to put it. To have a book focused on women, not only who may be struggling with an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, but Holly touches on so much more than that. Bravo to you, Holly for speaking your truth, and calling out so many issues that have needed to be called out for decades. This hit me on every level and is an extremely powerful read. It has helped me stay focused on my journey, and for that I am grateful.

Missed the Mark. So many positive possibilities but the book was riddled with so many political opinions, I couldn’t finish it. It’s a shame because it marginalized half of societal women. If you’re not an extreme leftist, this book isn’t for you.

Interesting read but too political. I picked this book hoping to get some good information and clarity on the topic of alcohol. I was disappointed to find out that the author used her left-sided political beliefs to try and support her way though the book. I didn’t pick up a book on politics, nor do I agree with her side of the fence, so instead of focusing on alcohol, I found myself feeling defensive towards her attacks on a system I truly believe in. She could have made a neutral platform, as not to alienate those who disagree with her. She lost me when she separated her audience through political parties. Also, if graphic “slang” language isn’t your thing, then this isn’t the book for you!

Thank you. This book has changed my life and I am beyond grateful!

The book I didn’t know I needed to read. Just looking to get some inspiration to get me through a dry-Jan has got me rethinking a lot more. Very insightful, fresh take on sobriety (coming from someone with no experience but could use the encouragement).

Weird. I was really looking forward to reading this book until yet again, another liberal shows how they can blame everything (including alcoholism) on Trump. Way too political!

Just ok. The author has a few good pointers but her annoying political opinions ruin this book. I read half this book by skipping over that nonsense .

It’s okay. I felt like I was reading a very long research paper. It wasn’t bad. I think the author made some very good points and arguments. It’s made me look at my own drinking habits.

Pass. Just another book, just another person, villainizing alcohol and anyone who drinks it.

Too much political bias. I really liked this book as a tool to become a non-drinker, but I was turned off by the frequent political bias. I used the references for other sobriety methods and found them more helpful and focused.

A MUST READ FOR WOMEN!. Tour de force! Whitaker’s unwavering courage to tackle alcoholism at first struck me as misguided. It’s not like others haven’t tried and ultimately authored books with different’spins’ but coming to the same dull and I enlightened conclusion. Not so here, this is a tectonic shift made not by her relentless and thorough commitment to research and reporting the facts. This coupled with her analysis and unwavering honesty makes for a ‘game changer’ of a book. She turns conventional (read white male) ‘thinking’ about alcohol on its head and reveals its dark and distorted underbelly. She shares her journey and tools on how to reclaim your voice and life. This book has changed my life and I’m profoundly grateful to Holly Whitaker for finding her voice and sharing it with us!

Changed my alcohol perception.. I read this to learn about what it would be like to not drink. and I learned so much more about self acceptance, society, and how alcohol has a role in my life.

Awesome!. So motivating and helpful. Must read

Loved this book!. This was an excellent read! I enjoyed Holly’s writing style and loved the new take on recovery. I was sober before reading the book, but still found so much to take out of it. Highly recommend no matter what your “sobriety status” may or may not be.

Yes!. Beautifully said. Healing to read.

Phenomenal. This book was phenomenal! I highly recommend all women to read this book.

Enlightening. An interesting, humorous, honest and informative book. I enjoyed it. I recommend it for all walks of life.

Great book all around. This book is written from a great view and with many eye openers, highly recommend for a first read into if your new into the journey of sobriety.

Recommended reading for all women. This is not just a read for the “quitters”, but for anyone who has questioned if alcohol was really working for them. Also recommended reading for women to see how they might be numbing out with other things (shopping, eating, etc) and why. Holly’s voice is genuine, fierce and comforting all along the way, and her narrative is well researched and completely compelling. Don’t miss this one.

Excellent, life changing read. Life changing, so well written and informative. Loved it!

Amazing, eye-opening, breath taking. Flew threw this book. Can’t recommend it enough.
