In Five Years by Rebecca Serle Book Summary

A New York Times bestseller
A Good Morning America, FabFitFun, and Marie Claire Book Club Pick

In Five Years is as clever as it is moving, the rare read-in-one-sitting novel you won’t forget.” —Chloe Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author of The Immortalists

Perfect for fans of Me Before You and One Day—a striking, powerful, and moving love story following an ambitious lawyer who experiences an astonishing vision that could change her life forever.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Dannie Kohan lives her life by the numbers.

She is nothing like her lifelong best friend—the wild, whimsical, believes-in-fate Bella. Her meticulous planning seems to have paid off after she nails the most important job interview of her career and accepts her boyfriend’s marriage proposal in one fell swoop, falling asleep completely content.

But when she awakens, she’s suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. Dannie spends one hour exactly five years in the future before she wakes again in her own home on the brink of midnight—but it is one hour she cannot shake. In Five Years is an unforgettable love story, but it is not the one you’re expecting.

- A Twist of Fate5 star

When I found this book, I thought it would be another romance novel about betrayal from a partner and a best friend, but it was so much more than I would of thought. There is love in every shape and form in this novel—not just romantic relationships with a partner. I was burning with anticipation of what might become of Dannie, Aaron, Bella, and David, but the ending was truly something I would never forget. P.S. My name is also Danielle (I go by Dani) and my boyfriend’s name is Aaron. What are the odds!

very slow and honestly the girl doesn’t have her life together bc she’s pining over her best friends boy when she has a husband like sissss get it together. also not well written sounds like every other romance book i’ve ever read

- Avoid2 star

Boring. Slow. Don’t recommend. I read A LOT and I am telling you there are other books worth your time— unfortunately this is not one of them.

- Loved it so much5 star

I loved this book, I could not put it down. The writing style is unique and beautiful. The whole idea of the flash forward five years is so intriguing and I was so invested in finding out what happened. The relationship between Dannie and her best friend Bella meant so much to me. I really feel like I know them both. I’ve never felt like that about a relationship in a book before. I was so invested in these characters and I know this book will stick with me for a long time. The story will surprise you and move you deeply. I highly recommend.

- Perfect easy read5 star

Kept my interest the entire time, felt like I was watching a movie with all her wonderful descriptions. I couldn’t put the book down!

Was a little slow to start, but eventually found myself not able to put it down.

Good so far

- Very very disappointing.1 star

I wasn’t expecting a majority of the book to be about cancer treatment. Very very disappointing.

- Cried & felt so much5 star

Beautiful story & I never expected the end

- Couldn’t put it down!5 star

I read this book in a day and told my best friend she has to read it. It doesn’t get boring and will make you not want to put it down... fair warning.. the end will leave you crying, but it’s such a beautiful story of friendship and love. Definitely a must read.

- Interesting4 star

I sampled the first 32 pages and fell in love with the story. I read the book within 24 hours. Couldn’t stop reading it. Although the book made me sad, I still really enjoyed reading it.

- LOVEEEE5 star

Definitely recommend during quarantine.

- Wow!5 star

This is the first book I’ve read in a long time and I couldn’t put it down, it was so good. I really hope there is a sequel to this book because there is so many unanswered questions. I need to see what happens next with Dannie! Please continue the series!

- Great book!5 star

Honestly, the plot was not what I expected. However, the book was beautifully written about love and friendship. Enjoyed every minute reading it!

- Beautifully written4 star

The language in this book makes you want to slow down and enjoy every sentence. The author does an extraordinary job bringing the characters — and their emotions — to life. The plot was not what I was expecting (in a good way), and comes together beautifully at the end.

- Mehh3 star

This book went a total different direction. The writing was very charismatic and if you have a love for nyc you will enjoy this, however, the sample is far from what this book is really about. More of a friendship driven plot.

- Disappointing ending3 star

The author does have talent and the book has some important things to say about love between friends and being open to life. The sample looked intriguing — a woman on her engagement night dreams that she wakes up 5 years in the future in an apartment other than her own, apparently living with a man other than her fiancé. An hour later she returns to reality. The story unfolds as she is haunted by the vision for the next 4 1/2 years as she pursues a busy career as a lawyer. Then, still unmarried, she meets the man in her dream under unexpected circumstances. The plot structure was a bit preposterous, but my expectations made it easy to suspend disbelief. Unfortunately the story veered off into a rather emotionally heavy direction and dragged a bit. I found the ending to be unrealistic, unsettled, and disappointing. I give it 3 stars.

I have never read a book this fast. It was so good! Thank you Rebecca.

- Love!!5 star

I picked this up under the premise of another romantic book to keep me distracted while social distancing, and I was pleasantly surprised. The story took a few turns I was not expecting and captured love in such a beautiful way. While it ended up being different than what I was anticipating, I still really enjoyed it and would recommend for a good weekend read.

- Meh3 star

I expected more. The description made me think of a completely different story line. I read the sample, but the promise of the description lead me to believe it was a different type of story. If u love a good book about friendship then this is the book for u. I guess I just expected a futuristic premonition type of story that wasn’t exactly fulfilled the way I wanted it to be lol. But the story of love beyond all measures between two friends is why I gave it 3 stars.

Read his in less than a day. So worth it and unexpected.
