A great story of unconditional love. Gavin and Raven are from two different worlds, with Raven’s mother being the hired help for Gavin’s rich family. When they meet in their early twenties, the attraction is immediate and a whirlwind affair quickly ensues. Forced apart for the next ten years, sparks fly when they are unexpectedly reunited in this fabulous second chance love story. Penelope is a master of telling the story of a dysfunctional family and of love that never dies. The side characters were intriguing and I would love to hear more of their stories. There were some heavy situations, but they were handled in a way that didn’t overpower the story with sadness. The pace was flawless, the love was real, and there couldn’t have been a more perfect happily ever after.

The Day He Came Back. Heartbreak, Second Chance, & So Much Love I love this heartbreaking second chance romance. Penelope Ward is easily one of my favorite authors as her writing is always exceptional. It's captivating, she seamlessly brings you into the world of her characters and falling in love with Gavin & Raven is so easy. The relationship between Gavin & Raven at age 20 and 21 is fresh and so genuine and although forbidden because of his mother, their connection becomes soul deep. Due to an impossible situation, Raven is forced to break both Gavin's & her own heart. Is it fate that brings them back together 10 years later? Raven continues to keep her secret and Gavin has his own. As the two try to navigate whether they can find their way to having friendship again, they also struggle with feelings left unresolved. I loved everything about this book. Gavin is so kind, compassionate, and completely swoony. Raven is funny, strong, also compassionate and so loyal. There is so much love in this story. Get comfy and fall in love with Gavin & Raven.

A top favorite. Wow! I feel like I haven’t read a book this well written in forever. Kept my attention and I caught myself constantly thinking of the storyline when I wasn’t able to read it. Amazing. Highly recommend :)

A favorite. This was my first Penelope Ward book. I was not a reader, just looking for something to do on a flight.... until I read this book. I absolutely could not get enough. I never wanted it to end and have finished two more of Penelope’s books in the last week. Exactly what I was looking for and more!

Amazing Second Chance Love Story!. I absolutely love everything about this story. Gavin and Raven are wonderful, lovable characters that I fell in love with almost immediately. They have incredible chemistry and such sweet and good hearts. And speaking of hearts, mine sure took an emotional journey as we went back to see when Gavin and Raven first meet for the first half of the book and then jump back to the present which is 10 years later for the second half. So many important life changing things happens during this time. I love stories like this! There is so much character and story development that I feel as though I know these people. Penelope Ward is a phenomenal story teller who gives us as readers everything we could possibly want in a tear your heart out and put it back together kind of story that is emotional, gut-wrenching, angsty, and heartwarming all rolled into one fantastic book! The epilogue was so amazing and satisfying I wanted it to go on forever!!

A beautiful second chance romance. What a beautiful story of second chances and true love! Raven is a nurse that has returned back to where she had her heart broken ten years ago; to take care of Gavin’s father. That mansion held so many memories between its walls. At least Gavin Masterson was no longer there. Until one day...he came back. They are from completely different backgrounds. Can they ever truly make it work? What really happened to break them apart in the first place? This is told in both the past and present tense so you find out how they met ten years prior. I was totally immersed in this story from the beginning. A very enjoyable, funny at times, sweet, emotional second chance romance! Major Swooning over Mr. Gavin Masterson!! Told in dual POV

You always make me cry!. I cannot even count how many of your books I have read, but you seem to love making me cry! The deep-rooted emotion, it kills me every time. Thanks for your excellent writing!

A high angst, second chance romance that kept me turning the pages!. I totally loved Raven and Gavin in this story! It was so refreshing to see that Gavin wasn't a spoiled rich kid like his brother Weldon. And I loved that Raven was a strong heroine with a solid head on her shoulders. Penelope does a great job of showing how these two kids from opposite sides of the track were so deeply connected to each other. I have a love/hate relationship with second chance romances, because for me, the reason for the separation of the two characters has to really be believable, and Penelope really crafted this one well with Gavin's despicable mother. Ugh, I hated that woman. The grown up me had to really step back and remember that Raven was just a 20 year old girl from the wrong side of the tracks that had everything to lose, so the decisions she made were what SHE needed to do. Again, I hate that evil witch, Ruth! Fast forward 10 years and Raven and Gavin are brought back together, and the sparks fly immediately. This part of the book was so angsty for me with what these character's present situations are. Gavin's present situation mostly is what caused this stress for me. Even though it caused me stomach aches, I couldn't read fast enough to see what was going to happen with Raven and Gavin. I absolutely loved the secondary characters! Gunther, Marni, and yes, even Weldon. Fans of high angst second chance romances are going to eat this book up!

First love and second chances are the best!. I absolutely loved Gavin and Raven. Gavin is the rich boy and Raven is the hired help. And Gavin’s mother is the wicked witch who does not want them together. This story is everything! First love and second chances—two of my favorite tropes. And Gavin’s father will steal your heart! You need this book in your life! 5 amazing stars

Intensely passionate!. Just how I like my romance novels; full of passion and yearning desire, but not lacking in plot and character development either. Plenty of reasons to lose yourself in the suspense and heartache of this love story for a couple of rainy days!

The BEST Repaired Heartache!. There are lots of ways to embody romance, so many ways to tell about the trials and tribulations that a couple may endure to get to that perfect, blissful place that is all their own. “The Day He Came Back” is the veritable embodiment of such a story. Raven’s own life struggles that bring her world to meld so perfectly with Gavin’s is truly told in the best possible way! Penelope Ward weaves this story just so - she gives new meaning to “hurts so good”. The heartbreak endured by both of these characters made me so anxious to find out how this story would unfold. It has all the elements (and then some) that caused my heart to beat erratically, and had me adjusting my thermostat in search of a cooler temperature. Gavin is DEFINITELY my new favorite book boyfriend. In the same light, Raven is the best kind of female lead that you root for - strong, honorable, and unapologetically honest. This book left me utterly sated. It’s the kind of book that I found myself wishing a silver screen adaptation would be made of. No doubt, if you’ve never read a book by Penelope Ward - make this your first one. If you’re already a fan - the euphoria continues!

Absolutely loved Gavin and Raven. Penelope has done it again. Only this time, this book I really connected with in a few ways. Some parts were hard to read because of my own life but this was another beautiful book by an amazing author. I couldn’t love Gavin and Raven more. Their story was as beautiful as it was sad. It truly showed the power of true love and what someone will give up to ensure a better life for the other. I loved how perfect these two were for each other even though they came from different worlds. I knew their journey would be filled with pain and trials to battle through but the outcome would be more beautiful because of it.

The day he came back. The first half of the book was difficult. Had to force myself to get through it. Conversational dialog between characters was, sorry, awful. Part 2 made up for it though. I think the author was trying to hard to emphasize, in part one, that the main characters were young.

I loved every last word. **“What other truths have you bent?” “I’m pretending I’m okay being your friend right now, when all I want to do is taste your lips.” A great second chance romance with a hero that is sexy and super sweet (despite his evil mother!). I love it when the guy is genuine and down to earth, who can also be the alpha at all the right times. 😏. “I am not sure I could walk away if I tried.”. I love Penelope and her writing style! "The Day he Came Back" is a beautiful second chance book. The first part of the book takes you through Gavin and Raven's background. Raven and Gavin are young adults when they meet. They have an undeniable chemistry right off the bat. Even though they come from two different worlds it does not matter to them. I loved how down to earth Gavin was but he is such a kind hearted man. Then you have Raven, although she is sweet and kind she says what is on her mind. I was really sad to see how their love ended, I thought it was heartbreaking. Then Part 2 happens ten years later. Although I loved Part 1 is awesome Part 2 drew me in. There were so many emotions that just kept me going. The secrets that surfaced were so fitting for the story. I loved all the secondary characters who added to the beauty of the story. This book was absolutely perfect. There is swoon, angst, and great comedic relief. I high recommend this book it is an excellent second chance book.

Second chance romance PERFECTION!. NO SPOILERS! The Day He Came Back was another MUST READ love story from Penelope Ward! The storyline and characters were phenomenal, and I loved the author’s writing style. Penelope crafted a sweet, sexy, swoon-worthy, angsty, and emotional standalone second chance romance with all the feels in The Day He Came Back, and I was addicted from beginning to end. I LOVED Gavin and Raven, as well as a few secondary characters, and couldn’t get enough of their incredible love story. There weren’t as many plot twists as I would usually expect from Penelope Ward, but it was still a very unique and enjoyable romance. I loved everything about The Day He Came Back, except for one side character, and I can’t wait to devour more must read love stories from Penelope Ward!

The Day He Came Back. This book is perfection a great read that addresses a fear that every women faces. Penelope has a way of writing a story that immediately leaves you wanting more and this wickedly awesome story did not disappoint. Gavin is a handsome son of a prominent Florida family who becomes infatuated with the daughter of the housekeeper, the beautiful Raven. Ruth his mother doesn’t approve and goes to great lengths to break them apart. When Raven’s mother finds she has breast cancer and no insurance Gavin’s Dad agrees to pay for the treatments behind Ruth’s back when Ruth learns of Gavin’s involvement with Raven and the fact her husband is paying for treatments she forces Raven to make an impossible decision. It’s here the story truly begins. This is a story of forced decisions, family betrayal, true all encompassing love, selflessness, fate, and true devotion. You are guaranteed to laugh, cry, and love as the story develops a five plus plus plus read that pulls every heartstring. A book that leaves you full of hope and craving more. If you have never read Penelope Ward make this your first....Bravo Penelope.

Penelope Ward has just rocked my world!!!!. Where does one begin to describe a masterpiece of words???? This book has so many emotions that I literally laughed out loud at times...and shamelessly shed tears...this book was EVERYTHING!!! Gavin was so swoony that it hurt...Raven was so relatable that I honestly felt like I was experiencing every single feeling, action, and thought that she had. When Penelope typed “The End” on this book...I hope she did a mic drop. She has completely blown me away...in the most amazing way. Well played Mrs. Ward.

The Sacrifices One Makes for Love. I have a few authors that I will practically drop everything in order to read their newest releases. Penelope Ward is one of these authors. Fortunately I was provided with an opportunity to read her latest release a little bit before everyone else. I consider myself lucky. The Day He Came Back was a book that once I got started, I didn't want to put it down. Gavin Masterson was a great character - a total book boyfriend to say the least. He does not act the way one might expect a wealthy, popular and good looking character too. Now his younger brother Weldon did indeed fit the stereotype expected. Gavin has come home for the summer from college, before going off to law school in the fall. He encounters Raven working in his parents home and is immediately taken by her; her strong nature. Raven is younger than Gavin and working the summer with her mother, Renata, who is the Masterson's housekeeper. Raven is an independent woman who was raised by her single mother. Finances are a bit tight and Raven is working with her mother to help ends meet. She meets Gavin upon his return home for the summer and pretty much immediately develops a crush. Gavin is impressed by Raven's honest, outspoken nature. This story follows a storyline that can be somewhat predictable. But it still works and is highly entertaining. A beautifully written story about first love and the sacrifices one might need to make. A highly recommended story.

3.5-4 Stars. The Day he Came Back was a sweet second chance romance. Gavin and Raven come from completely different backgrounds. Gavin comes from a family with money and there are certain expectations that he has to live up to. Gavin is the complete opposite of his elitist and judgmental mother and his pompous, egotistical younger brother, but Gavin is tired of the their lifestyle and how they treat others that don't have money. When he first meets Raven he is taken by her beauty but he also loves how real and down to earth she is. Raven is a breath of fresh air and a welcome change from all of the stereotypical rich and materialistic girls Gavin has grown up with. Raven can't help but question Gavin and his intentions, but once she is able to his true heart she sees what a kind, humble and respectful person he is. Even though Gavin's mother has made it clear she would never approve of him dating Raven, they spend the whole summer getting to know each other, and they fall and fall hard. Both Raven and Gavin can't imagine a life without one another and begin to plan a future together. But life gets in the way, and when cruel obstacles and loyalties drive them apart, they are both left shattered and heart broken. I enjoyed the chemistry between Gavin and Raven, but there were parts of the story that felt rushed. I was taken aback by a few of Raven's secrets, secrets that felt a little misplaced in the story and left me confused. Overall it was a sweet story

Review: The Day He Came Back. The Day He Came Back by Penelope Ward is yet another emotionally charged, sexy romance from a must-read author. A second chance romance that is about so much more than JUST second chances. Told in dual points of view between Raven and Gavin, this story had me hooked from the first page. Raven may come from the other side of the bridge in Palm Beach but she knows her worth. Gavin is tired of the haughty expectations of his mother and wants nothing more than to be happy, and Raven makes him happy. But when social standing becomes more important than her own sons happiness the relationship that was just getting started between Raven and Gavin implodes. Fast forward ten years and it is sheer cosmic fate that has Raven and Gavin back in the same house at the same time. Will they ever be able to get past their history and work out their differences or is this meeting just a chance to properly say goodbye. Emotional, heart-breaking, romantic, sexy, powerful - as always - Loved it! Enjoy!

Loved it!. 5 Stars The Day He Came Back is the latest and incredible stand-alone novel by Penelope Ward. OH. MY. GOSHHH you guys, I don’t even have the words to describe just how amazing this story was. It was everything I’d come to expect from a Penelope Ward novel-addicting, sweet, and phenomenal characters. Second chance romances are one of my favorite tropes and The Day He Came Back reminded me why I love them so much. I LOVED Gavin and Raven so much! With both of them coming from different sides of the track so to speak, I couldn’t wait to see how it was going to play out. Gavin had the biggest heart despite being raised in a privileged home. When he meets Raven, who was hired to help run the house, sparks flew off the pages. Their connection was beautiful. But how could it ever work? Now years later he’s back and everything has changed. Will the feelings still be there? Or will have time changed them? “Sometimes you can still feel the love you had for someone inside your heart, even after they shattered it.” I ADORED this book so much! The relationship between Gavin and Raven was complicated but oh so wonderful to read. Ms. Ward is a fantastic writer that is able to make you feel a part of her fictional world. I highly recommend reading it!

A Must Read Of 2019!. What can I say? Penelope Ward writes these stories that make me feel ALL the emotions! I laugh, I cry, I cringe, I gulp, I LOVE! I don’t know how she does it, but she does it again and again. I get so emotionally invested in her stories and characters that I struggle with letting go once the story ends. I absolutely loved this book. I love how this author always gives her characters just a little something that makes them fun and likable. For example, Gavin and his music. It contributed so much to his personality. I adored him and Raven. One of my favorite couples! That being said, excuse me while I go and scream from the proverbial rooftops... First love, Last Love, Forever Love. I fell in love over and over with this heart-breakingly beautiful, angsty, second chance romance. Raven and Gavin were each other’s first love. They were meant to be each other’s last. Get ready to fall in love. Gavin was totally smitten the first time he laid his eyes on Raven. He wasn’t your typical rich boy. He was gorgeous, and privileged but he wasn’t entitled. He was tired of all the “fake” in his life. He wanted a real connection. Raven was unfiltered and had no problem telling Gavin the truth. She wasn’t about to be another girl throwing herself at him because of his wealth or family name. She was just the “help” anyway, so she never thought he would want anything real with her. They weren’t supposed to fall in love. Their story is somewhat tragic. But their love was strong and never waned. I adored both of these characters. Raven was strong and resilient. Gavin was a good man even when his heart was broken. They had chemistry that just wouldn’t quit. They had a love that seemed unlikely at such a young age, but true love stands the test of time.

Don’t waste your time. The level of writing it terrible. Forced myself to finish. Sounds like an early high school girl wrote it.

If I could give more stars, I would <3. I love these characters SO HARD. Man, Raven is the type of girl I would have loved to have been in college. The fact that she knows Jiu-Jitsu, made me love her harder. A girl from "the other side of the tracks," knew she would never fit into someone like Gavin's world. Gavin's family (mainly his mother) considered her "the help" and would never approve of her son getting involved with her. The way he immediately connected to her made me love him more. Their connection was so deep. And the emotional choice Raven had to make.... would it all matter the day he came back?

HEA. I love this author, and this story doesn’t disappoint! I loved that their connection was still there. The sacrifices that Raven had to make personally and in her love life. Life is full of unfairness and plain evil, but 10 years gives them a chance to come full circle.

Loved loved loved. I absolutely loved this book, i know i could name a few of Penelope Wards as my favourite but this one just went straight to the tops. I loved Gavin and Ravens story. I loved both Raven and Gavin’s character both of them were so lovable and there was never a point in this story where you disliked one more than the other these were just two characters trying to find their meaning in life and in a way try not fall to fast. This was an emotional book that had you hanging on to each word, you knew that there was going to certain things that would play into this story that would make it hard for Gavin and Raven to be happy. What these two go through made it such a sad but beautiful story. I don’t want to say to much to give it all away but this was such an amazing story and if your fan of Penelope Ward you won’t be disappointed and if you have never read her before not sure what your waiting for. Absolutely loved this book and would love to give it more than 5 stars this deserves all the stars in the world loved loved loved it.

Loved it. If you love second chance romance you really need to one click The Day He Came Back this is a must read for lovers of second chances. This book certainly has all the feels you want and expect in a great read, it’s beautifully written, it has the perfect mix of love and angst and It will draw you in and captivate from the very first page to the very last line. Raven is a nurse assigned to look after Gunther who is suffering from dementia, he believes she is actually her mother Renata and Raven let’s him believe it rather than upset him. Both Raven and her mother used to work for the Masterson family and it didn’t end well so what will happen when the man she walked away from to help her mother walks back into her life...... Gavin can’t believe the girl who dumped him all those years ago is looking after his grandfather so will he leave the past behind or will he insist on knowing what really happened back then... This is a romance at its best, I fell extremely hard for Gavin but I also loved Raven and her unfiltered mouth, first love is always hard to get over and it’s even worse when you fall for the hired help will this time around be any different for this couple....I guess you need to read the book to find out what happens when Gavin and Raven spend time together. Once again we get another great story from this very talented author, just when you think you have seen her best she throws us another romance we won’t forget for a very long time.
