The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger Book Summary

The "brilliant, funny, meaningful novel" (The New Yorker) that established J. D. Salinger as a leading voice in American literature--and that has instilled in millions of readers around the world a lifelong love of books.

"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caufield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days.

Amazing āļøāļøšŸ‘‘. This is a book I was always hearing you should read and it would change your life. I read Catcher In The Rye on my 18th birthday. It did change my life!! It changed my life because I had always felt different an outsider. I felt like the character was speaking to me. I just related so much and I never expected that. I love the beauty of the writing and Holden Claufield , so imperfect that he is perfect!! I love this book so much, great literature that will move youā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø

It was okay. I liked hearing a different perspective on how a person may think but I felt like nothing big happened throughout the whole book.

How is this book so revered?. I donā€™t get the appeal of this book. I hate the main character, he repeatedly says ā€œhe hatesā€ this or is ā€œdepressed byā€ that. If you cut that dialogue out this book would be 30 pages shorter. Itā€™s actually really annoying. I had to force myself to finish this book and Iā€™m not happy I did.

Timeless Classic. I recently reread this for the first time since high school, a true classic.

KILL JOHN LENNON. KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON KILL JOHN LENNON

Just the first two chapters. Do NOT buy, it only includes the first two chapters of the book

Classic. I now see why everyone talks about this book so much.

Not my favorite. The story line was good but the words didnā€™t really flow for me. Holden swears kinda excessively which kind of made it less enjoyable.

Overrated. I can not believe the amount of five star reviews of this garbage! With Holden Caulfieldā€™s obnoxious nature, the bland setting, the horrible messages, and the lack of fire breathing turkeys, there is no time when it will be EVER worth reading this garbage! Besides, Johnathan Yardley and Phillip Lopate already exposed this as garbage. Great American novel my butt!

My favorite book. I first read this three years ago when I was twelve. This book gave me the voice I didnā€™t think I had as I found myself within its pages. Since then, I have read this book around five times. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a book (especially if you find yourself caught in a struggle with the hardships of life).

Favorite book of all time. I recently re-read this. We read it in school but it never really stuck with me. Honestly the whole time I was reading I kept waiting for something major to happen or a plot twist. It never did. It seemed to just be the normal day to day of a teen. Full disclosure I have bi polar disorder and other mental illness. And when the realization came at the end and the sudden rush came over me at once I cried til I couldnā€™t breathe. No book has ever related to me so perfectly and no other ever could. If you start to feel like the book isnā€™t really going anywhere just keep going, I promise you will see. Especially if you suffer from mental illness. 20/10 would recommend!

a true classic. the Rye captures the angst felt by every child passing through adolescents on their way adulthood. it resonates with everyone who reads it.

I've no idea what the hype is. this book is hailed by many as a timeless classic, so I began reading excited to see what the hype was all about. by chapter 10 it was a pain to continue. Holden is just a whiney brat with awful opinions on the world presented in the just judgemental way. it's extremely difficult listening to people that judgemental. my only takeaway from this book is stay away from anyone who would rate this more than 3 stars.

One to come back to!. I love this book, especially coming back to it again and again. Thereā€™s no more serious disillusionment than realizing the nuance of the world and that everything isnā€™t so simple, no matter what lens you use. And through the eyes of the disaffected teen Holden Caulfield, JD Salinger helps everyone feel a little less sure of themselves, and a little more jaded. Or, maybe, a little less, depending on where one is in life.

Hellish. This is by FAR the worst book I have ever read! It reads like an episode of Seinfeld except there is no humor whatsoever and the main character is completely insufferable. Do not read unless you are being forced to at gunpoint.

Worst protagonist in any novel Iā€™ve ever read. It isnā€™t just that this protagonist is unlikeable, which I typically associate as a net positive rather than a net negative, but instead itā€™s that this character is without a doubt the most annoying protagonist Iā€™ve ever had the displeasure to read. It was an absolute chore to get through this tedious and aggravating book, I only finished it to ward off anyone whoā€™d try to tell me it gets better by the endā€” which it does not. While I understand the overall message the author was attempting to convey, the reality is that the protagonist is just plain annoying, and you have to deal with this annoyance for 500 pages. The irony here is that heā€™s mostly annoying because he spends the entirety of this novel complaining about everything, and now Iā€™m complaining about his complaining. So infuriating!

Simply Put. Catcher in the rye is a unique story about a boy from upper city with mental issues. His views are life are so dark that even with all the opportunities and support he receives from multiple people he still canā€™t seem to find the motivation to find to accomplish even the most basic of achievements. J.D did a great job of painting the mindset and views of the main character and used every interaction with another to further the image. This book is a classic

Terrible.. Worst book I ever read.

Don't read it. Please. I am VERY into classics and read this because it was supposed to be one. The main character is SO. ANNOYING. Every SINGLE PAGE has either the words madman or goddamn. The main character hates everything and everyone and complains about everything constantly. I honestly feel like this is the worst book I have ever read. Would rate 0 stars if i could.

Not for Me. I hated this book. I think I would of liked it in high school, but I really just hated the main character. Heā€™s spoiled, and I found myself painfully, reading this to the end. That being said, I think the characters had a lot of texture. Unfortunately, I could care less about them.

This book is great. A definite worthwhile read. This book is a classic.

Loved it. Read for a college writing course, honestly the first book I read every word of instead of skipping around like I did in high school. If you didnā€™t get ā€œitā€ you didnā€™t put much effort into it. Maybe Dr. Seuss is better to stick to. It made me appreciate reading much more and 30 years later Iā€™m reading it again. Maybe Iā€™ll hate it this time. Sam I am.. I love green eggs and hamā€¦

Love this book. Til death do us part. I read this book a million times and Iā€™m still not bored with it. It resonates with me, I understand the main character. For those who have never faced or seen this hardship of depression and grieving will consider the protagonist annoying but he is simply misunderstood. I say give it a go.

The Catcher In The Rye Is One Of My Favorites. The Catcher In The Rye is one of the best books that Iā€™ve ever read, and thatā€™s why itā€™s one of my favorites. It was a really good book, and itā€™s a must read if anyone is interested in reading a good book like The Catcher In The Rye.

Vivid personality. Holden Caulfield is one of the most idiosyncratic narrators Iā€™ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

Disappointing. Very boring and repetitive. Lousy writing, not sure why itā€™s so well known.

Had to look up what it was about. CITR was a good book, the only "problem" i had with it was i was a hundred pages in and still couldn't understand what it was about. Listen, i don't read a bunch of classics, i do enjoy me some YA fantasy most of the time, so my confusion was only explainable. When I understood and looked it up though, i found myself liking it quite a lot. I finished it a couple of minutes ago and i've been thinking about Holden and just how well he can live in his own skin, or for how long. He is worrying to say the least, but his mind is something to be explored. I recommend it, but truly look into it before if you're not familiar with classics. Don't be like me!
