Genre-Defying Psychological Thriller. I don’t typically read mysteries or thrillers, and this is a genre-defying take on those styles. Vesta Gul finds a note in the woods that reads “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body.” Even though there is no body, this starts Vesta’s investigation into the death of a stranger. The novel is internal and we share Vesta’s intimate thoughts as she searches for a killer, or at least more information, only accompanied by her dog in an undisclosed, rural, northeastern village. She has lost her husband and recently moved to a cabin in a former Girl Scout camp. Over the course of only a few days we follow Vesta as she processes her loneliness and grief. This novel is psychological and, at times, heavy, but the writing keeps it light with a charming narrator and humor. I have a hard time describing this book since there is not much plot. The writing is so intimate, yet buoyant, it never feels like a slog. I was engaged the entire length of this book. I loved the precise writing, the humor, the subtle details. In many ways this book has a number of similarities to “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” which I read earlier this year and also enjoyed. Both of this literary mystery/thrillers are captivating, yet slowly unfold to reveal deeper issues.
