Hideaway by Nora Roberts Book Summary

"Reading Hideaway is like a mini vacation, as Roberts transports you from the sun-drenched mountains of Big Sur to the rolling hills of Ireland to the bustling streets of New York City." - Associated Press

A family ranch in Big Sur country and a legacy of Hollywood royalty set the stage for Nora Roberts’ emotional new suspense novel, Hideaway.

Caitlyn Sullivan had come from a long line of Hollywood royalty, stretching back to her Irish immigrant great-grandfather. At nine, she was already a star—yet still an innocent child who loved to play hide and seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared.

Some may have considered her a pampered princess, but Cate was in fact a smart, scrappy fighter, and she managed to escape her abductors. Dillon Cooper was shocked to find the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his house—but when the teenager and his family heard her story they provided refuge, reuniting her with her loved ones.

Cate’s ordeal, though, was far from over. First came the discovery of a shocking betrayal that would send someone she’d trusted to prison. Then there were years spent away in western Ireland, peaceful and protected but with restlessness growing in her soul.

Finally, she would return to Los Angeles, gathering the courage to act again and get past the trauma that had derailed her life. What she didn’t yet know was that two seeds had been planted that long-ago night—one of a great love, and one of a terrible vengeance…

Disappointing. I’ve read all of Nora Roberts books (not Silhouette Romance) and loved them all. Several are favorites I read again and again. This one was flat, it actually felt like some of her earliest work, like maybe it was a manuscript in the bottom drawer from 1989 she pulled out to fulfill a publishing commitment. The beauty of Noras talent is her character development. The reader knows and loves the characters and I get lost in the worlds she creates. This one was a shell. I never knew or loved any of the characters and Cate wasn’t real in any way. This is one of the few I’ll never read again like Come Sundown and The Villa. Unlovable, 2 dimensional characters, weak storylines and just - disappointing.

Exciting. Love the story had many twists and turns with family love.

Great Read!. Very entertaining!

Lame ending. Ending anticlimactic

Hideaway. Another Winner for Nora Roberts. I’d give it more stars if I could. Cate and Dillon are young and in love. Lily, Julia, Maggie are the best female role models a girl could have. Plenty of drama and suspense to keep you interested and a slam bang ending. Perfect.

Hideaway. Great story and well developed characters!

Real Good but Could Have Been Great. I love Nora and this book was good however she cheated us on the ending. Did she have a deadline to meet and ran out of time? We deserved the wedding payoff and to see the instigator find out his plan has blown up! The ending was disappointing.

Hideaway. Kept your attention, but drug on too long, an the ending was a let down. There was so much tension during the book, but lost it all in the end!

Hideway. I loved this book. My 2nd Nora Robert’s of 2021 {Under Currents being my 1st}. I bought the book and put off reading it for a day or 2 because of negative reviews. The reviews both indicated a disappointing ending... that the ending seemed rushed or the couple have gotten married. I thought the ending great. Once I realized Cate and Dillon didn’t break up or one or both didn’t get killed I was very relieved. In fact it ended with them talking about getting married. All Nora Robert’s Fans and Happily Ever After Fans - you’ll enjoy this book.

Tiny spoiler.... The book was great! I just wish she would have finished it with the wedding perhaps. It was just missing a little something at the end for me.

Escapism for 2020. I love Nora Roberts. I just finished ‘The Awakening’ and then found this one. If your looking for a book to escape 2020 for a bit and don’t need a huge reveal, this is the book for you. The characters were not fleshed out, two dimensional and not as well written. The book feels like it was pieced together. I imagined the story had been written awhile back, and worked on to bring it up to date. The ending was unsatisfactory.

Good. Great very Nora Robert

Great read! One of her better novels. She did a great job. Story pulls you in right away. Characters were great. Good development of characters and great dialogue. Really good story.

Meh. Predictable and PC’d

Hide away. Too formulaic!

Awesome. Another amazing piece of work

Fantastic book from Nora!. I’m a huge fan of Nora Roberts and she has outdone herself yet again! I finished the book in 3 days and I’m a working mom of 4 and I just couldn’t put the book down. I’m going to go back and read it again, slower this time. She just has such a rich and enigmatic writing style, which pulls you in and keeps you in until the very end.

Hideaway Nora Roberts. Love anything Nora Roberts writes. Saw some more negative reviews, so was questioning if I should buy it. But, I did, and throughly glad I did. Great story, fun characters. Kept me in it ‘till the end. Although as some said, would’ve been nice to get to a wedding or something.

Hideaway. Great characters, quick witted dialogue, excellent imagery without beating it to death and a very compelling story. A win in all categories.

Milk Toast. I love Nora Roberts but this was by far one of her most disappointing books. I gave this book one star because Part 1, out of 4 parts, was very good. After that it became boring, predictable and repetitive. The character development was weak for the male lead, and the ending was anti-climatic at best. I’m mad that I spent $14.99 on the audio book.

A letdown. I’ve enjoyed Nora Roberts work for years, but much in the same way I enjoy sitcoms on television. They’re slightly predictable but still provide decent entertainment. Hideaway was a let down on almost all the things I love about Nora Roberts books. The plot was drawn out and boring. The characters were one dimensional and boring. The dialogue was trite, and again, boring. Even the romance was rushed, as it didn’t even start until well past halfway through the book. Even the sex was mundane and I say that as someone who generally only skims those portions in all her books. These ones I skipped over entirely and missed nothing. I’m hugely annoyed with Roberts use of the phrases “I’m going to say...” and “... because ‘reasons’.” I have noticed these two particular phrases pop up frequently in her more recent books and neither of them flow like real conversation. I’m not sure why she continues to write people, from all different regions and all different dialects using these two phrases. I’ve never heard anyone, in real life, use them. It annoys me on a very petty level. The ending was anti-climatic. I was invested in neither hero nor villain nor any supporting characters. And the concept of Cate’s first relationship ending because he (and his entire family) blamed her for a hate crime was a low blow. I’d rather have seen his character flat out die than for him and his entire family to blame Cate for something she obviously had nothing to do. It came off very “A black man was viciously attacked, but white, rich, Cate is the real victim bc they used her name and cost her her relationship.” I was interested, initially, in this story because it somewhat reminded me of Public Secrets, which has alway been a favorite of mine. But unlike with Public Secrets, there is no mystery in Hideaway. You know who all the “bad guys” are right off the bat. There are no twists, no “oh, I never expected it to be HIM/HER.” Everything is spelled out quite nicely within the first couple chapters honestly. I have rarely had to force myself to finish reading a book, but sadly this one falls into that category. Not all books will appeal to all people, this one hit an extremely flat note for me.

Love story. Kept my attention. Good beach read.

Not her best. I’ve been reading Nora Roberts books since the early 2000’s, and I am a huge fan of her earlier works. This book has all her usual style with these types of stories except zero suspense. You knew where it was going every step of the way. This book is split into four sections and while I enjoyed the first three parts it seemed to me that the last section of the book felt rushed, and the ending was unsatisfying at best.

Hideaway. I thought I was reading a Danielle Steel novel. Everything was too perfect. Ending was too simple.

Hideaway. Just finished reading the latest gem from Ms Roberts. It hits my comfort level in every way. The writing is so mature, strong while the story unfolds brimming with emotions and intrigue. I look forward to her next literary jewel. . A huge fan having read all of her stories and especially the “In Death” saga several times . Judy Holmes.

Hideaway tree. This novel is pitiful!

A disappointing book with NR’s often recycled theme.... From an author who can (usually) deliver suspense and well-researched novels, Hideaway was a dull read with no mystery, no engaging relationships, and contained an anti-climatic ending to a very predictable theme of childhood trauma, decades old revenge, and later-in-life loves. It felt very much like a book trotted out on the fly simply to meet a deadline.
