An isolated mansion. A chillingly charismatic aristocrat. And a brave socialite drawn to expose their treacherous secrets. . . . From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes “a terrifying twist on classic gothic horror” (Kirkus Reviews) set in glamorous 1950s Mexico.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

“It’s as if a supernatural power compels us to turn the pages of the gripping Mexican Gothic.”—The Washington Post

“Mexican Gothic is the perfect summer horror read, and marks Moreno-Garcia with her hypnotic and engaging prose as one of the genre’s most exciting talents.”—Nerdist

“A period thriller as rich in suspense as it is in lush ’50s atmosphere.”—Entertainment Weekly

Repetitive. There were many sections that I had to quickly page through because they were so repetitive.

There’s a Fungus Amongus. The first 3/4 of the book was great. Mysterious and spooky. Then the book reaches a weird turning point. I just couldn’t buy in to the idea of what was controlling the house and the people within it. It was just way too far fetched for me. A fungus? Hmm.

Gripping and just the right amount of terrifying.. I’m not usually one to be surprised by a story. That being said, I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen in this book and it THRILLED me. This story is as intoxicating as the malevolent force our beloved heroine faces. I felt my heart pounding in tune with the house and held my breath at every turn. I sat down to read the first chapter and I’ve finished the whole thing three hours later. I literally could not put it down. I must say however that this isn’t the sexy crime thriller you might think it is, and if you aren’t prepared for genuine gothic horror you might wish to find your crime fiction fix in another story. This story has revived the true gothic horror genre. This author has made the spirit of Mary Shelley proud, and reminded us that anything can strike fear into your heart if the right person tells the story.

Great!. Fresh and entertaining.

Took too long to get to the point. The beginning dragged and the main character turned annoying. IT wasn’t bad but took too long to get to the actual story

Gothic indeed. Spell-binding, hold on for a wild ride! Just in time for Halloween and spooky things. A great read!

Wow. Mexican Gothic is a slow burn book with the perfect amount of horror. I love the author’s way with words and imagery that it made me feel I was a ghost watching from the sideline. There were times that the book did drag on and it felt a bit repetitive but it can be overlooked. If you are a Lovecraft fan or a horror fan in general I highly recommend that you read this book.

Fresh take on the gothic romance. While the premise sounds fairly typical—a cousin fallen mysteriously ill at an isolated mansion in need of rescue—the development is not. The cultural influences (indigenous and Mexican mythology) lend a new element unfamiliar to the average reader. The atmosphere is suitably chilling without being over the top. The characters are mostly dynamic, though the villains could’ve been fleshed out a bit more. The romance itself doesn’t feel too forced or abrupt either. A solid choice for lovers of horror with a touch of romance wanting new experiences from other perspectives.

Amazing!!. Once I started I couldn’t put it away

Long Winded. Great story, unfortunately it doesn’t really pick up until the last half of the book. Beginning is really slow going. Would love a sequel. What happens to Francis and Noemi? How do they live? Does the Gloom call him to return?

Love. My boss gifted me this book & it was my first time reading a sci fi “spooky” book and i loved it !! The way the author writes just takes you into such deep imagination. I was cringing at times while reading what Naomi was going through in the home.

What can I say, it kills the time. Pretty good. A unique take on a well worn standard.

I really liked it. Excellent read highly recommend it. The first half is like Edgar Allan Poe meets Jane Austen. The second half is more like HP Lovecraft meets Emily Brontë. Some people complaining about pace need to remember that this story has a slow burn. It is old-school horror which builds the suspense.

Captivating and chilling. Such a fun and eerie adventure! I felt transported into the creepy house and freaking out every second lol

Phenomenal read!. So so so good! Let me tell you. This book is creepy to the fullest! Well written and great character development. Such a great thriller to get your hands on.

Pretty great!. It took a little to get into but I ended up really enjoying it! Kinda wish there was another one but it ended well and is probably a good place to leave the story!

It was okay. Okay story but the answers you seek fall flat when revealed. I wanted something more mind blowing to happen. Meh. On to the next one.

Fantastic. This is such a fun read!

5 stars. Very good!

Pulp. I expected something that would break new ground. Instead, nothing but old pulp fiction in a new bottle. The woman has talent, but it is wasted on gothic retread. Disappointing.

REALLY GOOD READ!!!!!!. This book was so ensnaring once you pick it up make sure you have so free time cause you won’t be able to put it down! This is a fantastically written book!

This is a very unique story and well written.. The story is pleasant and well assembled. It transports the reader into the mind and feelings of the characters

Hated it. Nothing good happened till two thirds of the way through and didnt like what did happened. Dont see how this was a ny times best seller

Perfect october read!. I loved this book, my favorite of hers so far! please HBO make this a miniseries stat!!!

Could not put it down!. I don’t like scary stories but I could not put this book down until the very end!

Mexican Gothic Review. I really really enjoyed this book. Though it was a slow beginning, at the halfway point is where things truly started to pick up. It was a wild ride. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Worth the Read. This books keeps you interested the whole way through. You don’t truly know what’s happening and have to keep reading to find out

Slow paced, but good. I liked this book. I read it in a day, took about 6 hours or so. The beginning-middle dragged a bit. The story was interesting. I would have preferred if the contents of the book were condensed to be the length of half the book or so, and then for some more content. Lots of pages for not that much development. I probably wouldn’t read a sequel, not invested enough in the characters.

Unsire. Hmm I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It was interesting, a setting I’ve never read about and hard to put down yet..? Maybe it was the writing that I found difficult to read—it felt choppy and difficult to glide through.

Dull Slog. I only read this book because it had some decent reviews but for me it was a tedious slog that failed to engage. To be fair I only managed 77% but that is also a sad indictment because I gave it a really good go; much to my regret. The main character is a spoiled high society Mexican debutant who enters an episode of “Tales of the Unexpected”; that in itself is not so bad, and maybe a decent editor could have salvaged a short story, but not for me.

AWESOME SLOW BURN HORROR. Some people say this book is slow paced but the slow pace of the book is meant to build tension and suspense. This book reads like thriller/horror movie, so good!! Moreno really knows how to bring the scenes in her book to life! READ IT

a lot of fun. this book was a lot of fun. it isn’t deep or full of thought provoking philosophy or anything - it is simply a straightup haunted house story with a fun twist and likable characters. i don’t always want or need great literature, sometimes i just need a fun little book and this was exactly that.

Way too slow. When it takes almost 500 pages to finally make the book interesting, the the book isn’t worth it. Sure when it finally got interesting, it ended. Very anti climatic and not worth the money I spent.

Loved it. Dark story full of magical realism. Beautiful horror story, where once again people are the real monsters.

Great Read. I haven’t read a book like this in such a long time. I was pleasantly surprised how this story was weaved. People say this book is almost like a combo of Pride and Prejudice and Dracula, and I agree. It’s not at all what I expected. The author did a great job of combining post colonialism with a classic gothic troupe that hasn’t been seen since books written in the 60s. You get the classic romance and eeriness of a big old house, but with an unexpected twist.

Excellent Ride. Great audio quality. Great voice acting. Great story. Definitely a buy.

Worth it. While a little slow initially this book picks up! Very suspenseful and fun to read. I couldn’t put it down

Can’t put down kind of book. Very different imaginative yet romantic with a strong woman character. Highly recommend it

Great Story. Spooky house...check. Creepy people...check. Shocking plot...check. Highly recommend this book. Only wish I didn’t know the ending so I could enjoy watching it unfold again. The perfect read on a dark and stormy night.

Atmospheric Novel of Gothic Horror. “Mexican Gothic” is a novel that slowly builds a rich and atmospheric tale of horror. It follows Noemí Taboada, a young socialite and student who is sent by her father to check on her cousin Catalina. He has received a disturbing letter from Catalina that makes him concerned about her mental health. Noemí puts aside her studies to become an anthropologist in order to travel to the mountainous and remote home of the Doyle family. This English family had moved to Mexico generations ago and operated a formerly prosperous silver mine, but the mine closed and the family has declined till only a few members remain. Catalina had met and married the oldest Doyle son, Virgil. When Nomeí reaches the ancestral home of the Doyle’s, things begin to get creepy. Her cousin seems distant and disturbed. The Doyles are strange and aloof, except for Francis, the quiet and studious youngest son. The story progresses later by layer into more disturbing revelations, and into more and more darkness. The story is a gripping and rich tale, that only clearly reveals the form of its horror in the final third. The characters are engaging and surprisingly modern given the time period of the setting. Nomeí is initially characterized as a social butterfly, but we learn she is also an intellectual, and later we see her amazing strength. The novel is well named, and Ms. Moreno-Garcia plays with the tropes of the gothic novel in different ways. The sacrificial virgin; the damsel in distress; the cruel, unyielding husband; the spooky, distant locale are all on display. However, there is also a post-colonial element throughout the story, and a racist aspect exemplified in the eugenics espoused by the Doyle patriarch. This is a modern gothic tale under the trappings.
