Greyhound (Movie Tie-In) Book Reviews
Greyhound (Movie Tie-In) by C. S. Forester Book Summary
Soon to be the major motion picture Greyhound, a WWII naval thriller of "high and glittering excitement" (New York Times) from the author of the legendary Hornblower series
The mission of Commander George Krause of the United States Navy is to protect a convoy of thirty-seven merchant ships making their way across the icy North Atlantic from America to England. There, they will deliver desperately needed supplies, but only if they can make it through the wolfpack of German submarines that awaits and outnumbers them in the perilous seas. For forty eight hours, Krause will play a desperate cat and mouse game against the submarines, combating exhaustion, hunger, and thirst to protect fifty million dollars' worth of cargo and the lives of three thousand men. Originally published as The Good Shepherd and acclaimed as one of the best novels of the year upon publication in 1955, this novel is a riveting classic of WWII and naval warfare from one of the 20th century's masters of sea stories.

Destroyer Life. Best depiction of the war for the Atlantic. Having served aboard a Destroyer and Naval Control of Shipping commands - this honors those who served in the Atlantic well.
Tom Hanks does it again. Beautiful cinematography, great acting all around. I could feel the emotion when decisions had to be made. Wonderful story telling about a determined generation of heroās.
Entertaining film!. Excellent filmmaking with tight editing and convincing action. You really get a feel of what it was like on the bridge of a destroyer in World War II somewhere in the frigid north Atlantic. Exciting stuff.
Strange book. I wish I had āsampledā this book before purchasing it. Iām an avid reader of all kinds of books, however, this one is close to unreadable.
Greyhound. This is another great movie with Tom Hanks at the helm. He wrote the screenplay and gave us the ability to feel the tension between the characters that is not explicitly explained through otherwise lengthy character development scenes. The central theme of the story isnāt character traits and personalities, itās the physical and spiritual exhaustion, hunger, and thirst Captain Krause experiences to save as many lives as possible. We even sense his heartbreak at the loss of fifty souls on the first U-Boat sinking when he witnesses a literal ocean of blood in the aftermath of the sinking. He is deeply affected by that, and weāas an audienceāfeel the depth of the loss and feel the victory for the lives saved. āDoug in Austin, Texas
Good action, mediocre storytelling. Greyhound isnāt a bad movie but itās not a very good one either. My dad served on Fletcher class destroyers in the Navy, Iām a history buff and a big Tom Hanks fan so this should have been a slam dunk. The action sequences are well done, the special effects are convincing so that part of the movie - which is about 80% of the total - is compelling and entertaining. On the other hand, the Greyhound DESPERATELY needs another 15 minutes of character development for Tom Hanksā character and the other key cast members. Thereās an undercurrent that SOMETHING is going on with Hanksā character, thereās some tension with the crew, but the movie never gives you any hint of what it is. Unlike Saving Private Ryan, you donāt get any sense of who this guy is or whatās driving him so he comes across as distant and troubled by something. The same is true with the truly perfunctory opening scene with his girlfriend. I wasnāt sure until the end of the scene if Elizabeth Shueās character was his sister, ex-wife or his motherās uncleās third cousin. It could have been a really good movie but the lack of character development mostly left me thinking about how much better it should have been.
