Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie Book Summary

A Good Morning America Book Club Pick and New York Times Bestseller!

From debut author Asha Lemmie, “a lovely, heartrending story about love and loss, prejudice and pain, and the sometimes dangerous, always durable ties that link a family together.” —Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Nightingale

Kyoto, Japan, 1948. “Do not question. Do not fight. Do not resist.”

Such is eight-year-old Noriko “Nori” Kamiza’s first lesson. She will not question why her mother abandoned her with only these final words. She will not fight her confinement to the attic of her grandparents’ imperial estate. And she will not resist the scalding chemical baths she receives daily to lighten her skin.

The child of a married Japanese aristocrat and her African American GI lover, Nori is an outsider from birth. Her grandparents take her in, only to conceal her, fearful of a stain on the royal pedigree that they are desperate to uphold in a changing Japan. Obedient to a fault, Nori accepts her solitary life, despite her natural intellect and curiosity. But when chance brings her older half-brother, Akira, to the estate that is his inheritance and destiny, Nori finds in him an unlikely ally with whom she forms a powerful bond—a bond their formidable grandparents cannot allow and that will irrevocably change the lives they were always meant to lead. Because now that Nori has glimpsed a world in which perhaps there is a place for her after all, she is ready to fight to be a part of it—a battle that just might cost her everything.

Spanning decades and continents, Fifty Words for Rain is a dazzling epic about the ties that bind, the ties that give you strength, and what it means to be free.

What a Journey. I could not put this book down! I could see everything like a movie because her writing style is excellent. I was not ready for the book to end and I hope there will be a volume 2. It was that good!

Brb crying!. What an amazing book! I can’t remember the last time I read something that touched me so much I couldn’t stop crying. The writing is heartbreakingly beautiful. The characters are portrayed so vividly - they’re almost life like, and it feels as if I’ve known them in a past life. Thank you Asha!

Beautiful and haunting. It is a tale I will keep close to my heart for many years.

Skillful but brutal. Some great description, interesting, cultural detail, but way too brutal

Disappointed in the ending.. First of all, this was a compelling book about the strength and perseverance of the main character, Nori. Her upbringing with her hateful and sadistic grandmother made me so angry about the way she was treated. Through no fault of her own, she was made to suffer for her mother’s infidelity. Then she found love of sorts with her half brother, whom she adored and who made her whole. Just when you think she has found some measure of happiness, the author decided to kill him off and nearly destroys Nori once again. Once she has come to terms with her grief, she finds happiness with an old friend in London and meets a man who loves her unconditionally, and she agrees to marry him. So I’m thinking there will finally be a happy ending at last, but no, the author decides to have her return to Japan to fulfill her hateful grandmother’s request to stay and inherit the family’s wealth and legacy. She hadn’t known she was pregnant with her fiancée’s child, so rather than returning to England to have a life of love with him and their baby, she chooses to stay in Japan. She must agree to marry someone who will provide a legitimate heir whether she loves him or not. I really felt betrayed by the ending, and truly don’t see her justification to maintain the legacy of this family, who hated and abused her, and tried to have her killed more than once. The comment that “family is everything” only applies if you have a family legacy worth saving. Hers does not!

Good until the end…. I was engrossed in this book and was really enjoying it, until the ending. I don’t want a fairy tale ending but seriously disappointed in this ending. Abrupt and frankly not believable.

Gripping at every turn. Exhausting, emotional, fulfilling, and fascinating.

Fifty Words for Rain. The end was 180 degrees from the way Nori felt and lived. I would like to know why the author chose to end the book that way.

Beautiful book, terrible ending. This was a beautiful, gut wrenching book with no resolution. I would have given another star before the last chapter.

A great book!. A phenomenal read. I highly recommend it!

Loved it until the end. I give it three stars because most of the book is really good but I’m so confused and let down by the ending! It feels like there should be a book #2 but there isn’t. There are huge loose ends not tied up. What about Noah? What about her mother? It is just not nice to write an amazing book and get the reader all emotionally involved in the characters and then leave them hanging like that :( Please make a sequel!

Breathtaking. This is a frustrating tale of survival and duty. I finished quite satisfied.

Wonderful read!. This book has been among my most favorite I have ever read! Every page had me constantly hooked and loved every moment of reading it! I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested and I hope there can be a continuation to this story!

Read. Read it. That’s all I’m gonna say. Read.

Sad and depressing. Interesting insights into Japanese culture, but a very dark book. I kept reading hoping for a happy ending, but...

A Tapestry of Emotion. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. The characters are expertly crafted and each chapter feels like a stroke of a brush added to a beautiful painting. Although dark and harrowing, the finished product is one that leaves you deeply moved. A truly artistic tale. I can’t wait for Asha’s next book

Sad deep story.... I read this book fairly quickly (well within a week) and it was a very good read. It’s difficult to find a book to keep your attention sometimes but this book, i couldn’t put down. The main character Nori is an amazing having to go what she does and as the story progresses, new characters begin to shape around her. Then i got to the last part of the book, all the intensity just floundered and although i do like the book, i wasn’t a huge fan of the ending. It just seemed flat from the parts before it being so intense. Regardless of my thoughts on the ending, i would recommend this read. It will get you deep in sadness in some parts but good books always convey a great emotion inside a reader and this but did so for me.

Terrible. Poorly written and a predictable story. Do not read this book.

Riveting. This book carried me across time and culture, teaching me new things about the past and unfamiliar ways of living. Most importantly, it reinforced the universal depth of the human heart, and the strength of love.

Beautifully written. Gripping from the first page. I loved this book.
