The Room Where It Happened by John Bolton Book Summary

As President Trump’s National Security Advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves.

The result is a White House memoir that is the most comprehensive and substantial account of the Trump Administration, and one of the few to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the President, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a President for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation. “I am hard-pressed to identify any significant Trump decision during my tenure that wasn’t driven by reelection calculations,” he writes. In fact, he argues that the House committed impeachment malpractice by keeping its prosecution focused narrowly on Ukraine when Trump’s Ukraine-like transgressions existed across the full range of his foreign policy—and Bolton documents exactly what those were, and attempts by him and others in the Administration to raise alarms about them.

He shows a President addicted to chaos, who embraced our enemies and spurned our friends, and was deeply suspicious of his own government. In Bolton’s telling, all this helped put Trump on the bizarre road to impeachment. “The differences between this presidency and previous ones I had served were stunning,” writes Bolton, who worked for Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. He discovered a President who thought foreign policy is like closing a real estate deal—about personal relationships, made-for-TV showmanship, and advancing his own interests. As a result, the US lost an opportunity to confront its deepening threats, and in cases like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea ended up in a more vulnerable place.

Bolton’s account starts with his long march to the West Wing as Trump and others woo him for the National Security job. The minute he lands, he has to deal with Syria’s chemical attack on the city of Douma, and the crises after that never stop. As he writes in the opening pages, “If you don’t like turmoil, uncertainty, and risk—all the while being constantly overwhelmed with information, decisions to be made, and sheer amount of work—and enlivened by international and domestic personality and ego conflicts beyond description, try something else.”

The turmoil, conflicts, and egos are all there—from the upheaval in Venezuela, to the erratic and manipulative moves of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, to the showdowns at the G7 summits, the calculated warmongering by Iran, the crazy plan to bring the Taliban to Camp David, and the placating of an authoritarian China that ultimately exposed the world to its lethal lies. But this seasoned public servant also has a great eye for the Washington inside game, and his story is full of wit and wry humor about how he saw it played.

Insanity. Bolton is inventing things to sell books.

Not Worth Reading. Truly not worth reading. This book has nothing new and further explains his motive.

Self-interested traitor. Traitor.

Terrible unpleasant tedious reading.. Full of irrelevant information, and tedious details. Horrible lack of literary creativity.

No surprises. No one is surprised about this administration, and it’s fun to read about trumpie-poo doing idiotic things that we all already know and see him doing.

The room where it happened. Self serving and critical of everyone except, of course, himself. And boring to boot.

Government workers angst. It’s obvious Bolton was not debriefed when he exited government. Furthermore...Bolton and all government workers work for the American People. Bolton has allowed his own personal angst to be on display along with classified information he has thrown before the world to see. Anyone that is paid via tax payer’s funds should check their personal vindictiveness and politics at the door. Nice try Bolton.....you mostly just showed your ass.

Boring and Repetitive. I am not Pro Trump, but this book is tedious to read. Stopped half way through the end.

Lot of garbage.. Tales from the swamp.

Another?. This guy has bad mouthed everyone he has ever worked for. The entire book has been debunked.

Awesome. Counteracting the hater votes

Should have testified!. I won’t buy this book because Bolton should have testified and not waited in order to make money! He claims congress committed “impeachment malpractice“ but they didn’t have the info he could have provided. The people who worked for him were courageous and testified in the face of presidential bullying but he couldn’t be bothered to even speak up for them! History will judge him harshly! I already have!

Extremely boring. Full of irrelevant and tedious information. Way too long. Honestly couldn’t even finish it and I don’t know if I will.

Debunked. Trump, even makes his haters money.

Disappointed. My disappointment in this book is not with the substance, but with the style, if that makes sense. John Bolton definitely has a lot of interesting issues to discuss, but the narrative fails, in my opinion, to capture and reconvey in a manner that works for this individual reader.

Excellent Read. It opens your eyes to the world of reality TV has-been turned narcissist president.

Jamal. J.. Great job after all. Thanks John for your honesty and loyalty for your country

Fictional Read. Bolton seems to be full of himself This should be called a Fiction

Weak. One egomaniac complaining about another egomaniac.

So boring. Not sure if it’s Bolton’s writing or if he is just horribly boring. This was hard to read from the first page to the last. Snoozer.

ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY MESMERIZING. If you are planning on voting this November 2020; I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK and what had happened the first term of President Trump. I am NOT asking you to believe its contents; I am ONLY asking you to read it and make your own judgment and decide if you want President Trump for second term in the White House!!! I voted for Trump in 2016 & I lobbied for his presidency passionately even though my dad advised me against it; nonetheless; the idea of a business man away from your everyday genuine politicians running the White House was extremely appealing; yet; I didn’t know whole a lot about Trump Narcissism . If you care about your family you will read the book. If you care about this great nation you will read the book. I don’t think the book is full of lies and fiction like some claims.Bolton was genuine nationalist and always eager for a war but he was smart and honest. After everything happened with Trump in 2020 and after I read the book ; I WOULD NOT BE VOTING FOR TRUMP IN NOV 2020 for a second term. I no longer can explain and justify what Trump does and says to my four kids.ENOUGH IS ENOUGH...!!!

Trump is a moron. A little self serving how he bashes nearly all of Trumps National Security decisions but did not speak up until after anything could be done. However it was interesting to get the behind the scenes look. I enjoyed the book.

Insightful. Delivers much needed insight into the Trump administration hiding behind closed doors.

No Surprises. All one needs to do is listen to Trump speak and read his Tweets to know this was happening behind the scenes. Truly boggles the mind why anyone thinks Trump has the capacity to have anyone’s interests in mind other than his own. It’s also telling how he buddies up with dictators and views Kim Jong-un as a best friend. I’d say it’s funny if it wasn’t so sad and scary.

Review without reading the book huh!. I don’t understand how someone can post a review when they haven’t even read the book, that should not be allowed. I have not read the book but I still had to say something.

FDT. I love how all these brainwashed people in the reviews listen to any crap Trump says. HE LITERALLY LET 200K PEOPLE DIE IDIOTS!!!

Uggh. So hard to get through! I thought it was just me. Boring!

Traitor. Bolton is a traitor to our country. This book proves it

Well, It’s Definitely A John Bolton Book. Mostly, about how he can do or did everything better. Would have done this. Would have done that. They fumbled around. Trump was not the person for President. Clearly anyone including my dog could have done a better job. I can see why Bolton hoarded the information & didn’t come forward during Trump’s impeachment. Bolton is clearly about himself & his politics. Not an American.

Great book, Sad reality that many don’t want to believe. Front Row view of the circus. I can’t wait until everyone witnessing the evil first hand, expose the truth. It really doesn’t surprise me. Thug in office, CONFIRMED.

Fantasy. Designed only to make excuses for himself and to criticize trump. Bolton has no integrity.

TP. Toilet paper

Good Book. Wow is all I can say!

Something is off. I just dont trust this guy... seems like he has an agenda. Seems like another nothingburger...

Sycophant turned whistleblower?? Helpful!. I’m failing to see the value of all of these sycophants who supported these people into power and stuck around to soak up whatever benefit they could from people that *we all knew* were corrupt and greedy turning around and doing these *tell all* books, as if the rest of us should be surprised that someone who acted a way for 30-60 yrs+ is still acting that way. John Bolton is apparently the only person in America who didn’t know of Trump’s 60+-year-long struggle with mental illness and the pattern of behavior that resulted. Some Advice: DONT BE A SYCOPHANT!! It’s equally as corrupt and evil as the principle actor! You guys are adults. These excuses are pathetic. You’re enablers for your own gain. You did know better. You convinced yourself otherwise. Live it, but don’t pretend your an innocent, unknowing victim just because you lied to yourself for so long.... especially after you betrayed your country by refusing to come out with this information in a timely manner.

Sleeping wasn’t a problem.. I get it. Bolton doesn’t like Mnuchin but does like the word “apace “. At least my supply of melatonin is still good.

Bad book .... Crazy

Boring. I love to read but this book after only reading 8% is terrible. Too much dribble and not enough substance. It doesn’t hold your attention. What a waste of money and shame on the publisher to think thus was worth printing!

😫. Well I can’t read it because it won’t download and I cannot figure out why been waiting all day

The room where it happen. I enjoy this book very much.

S-L-O-W READ!. Too much hype over this book. Nothing spectacular about it. Nothing we already don’t know. Don’t bother buying over priced book that is really a boring one to read. Had high expectations and was totally disappointed.

Excellent read. Excellent book. Great look at the chaos of Trump presidency.

Not worth your time. Terrible boring interesting

Bad. Not worth reading

Worth the read. I highly recommend reading this book.

Great tell-all book!!!. Amazing accounts of how messed up the Trump White House is!! And all the shocking things he’s done!!

Cringe. Bolton is a Warhawk Neocon responsible for our terrible foreign policy of the past 20 years. Now he's trying to appeal to the Left by being anti-trump. He's right-wing grifter who needs to be shunned.

Elect a clown, expect a circus!. Sad but true account of the total circus our White House has become..... I never would have believed this could happen in America. Treason!

Five Stars So Far. Fascinating read and an interesting expose on the Trump White House. Also interesting to me how the first review here was posted literally before that person could read the book. To those who want to read about what’s been happening under our noses by this administration I recommend this book.
