The Sentinel by Lee Child & Andrew Child Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BLOCKBUSTER JACK REACHER SERIES THAT INSPIRED TWO MAJOR MOTION PICTURES AND THE STREAMING SERIES REACHER

Jack Reacher is back! The “utterly addictive” (The New York Times) series continues as acclaimed author Lee Child teams up with his brother, Andrew Child, fellow thriller writer extraordinaire.

“One of the many great things about Jack Reacher is that he’s larger than life while remaining relatable and believable. The Sentinel shows that two Childs are even better than one.”—James Patterson

As always, Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. One morning he ends up in a town near Pleasantville, Tennessee.

But there’s nothing pleasant about the place.

In broad daylight Reacher spots a hapless soul walking into an ambush. “It was four against one” . . . so Reacher intervenes, with his own trademark brand of conflict resolution.

The man he saves is Rusty Rutherford, an unassuming IT manager, recently fired after a cyberattack locked up the town’s data, records, information . . . and secrets. Rutherford wants to stay put, look innocent, and clear his name.

Reacher is intrigued. There’s more to the story. The bad guys who jumped Rutherford are part of something serious and deadly, involving a conspiracy, a cover-up, and murder—all centered on a mousy little guy in a coffee-stained shirt who has no idea what he’s up against.

Rule one: if you don’t know the trouble you’re in, keep Reacher by your side.

Sentinel. The plot is too complicated for pleasure reading.

Good book. I enjoyed the pace of the book and Reacher was again on point.

The Sentinel. It took me 2 months to finally finish this book. I read all the prior Reacher books in two days. Just not the same. Never again.

Not up to usual standards. A bit disappointed in the book. Way to much detail with a lot less action. A storyline that twisted so much in the middle I could not follow it.

Sadly annoying. Diarrhea of the keyboard. Who needs a complete description of every person place thing and thought. Started thinking child was getting paid by the number of words.

Well written overall. But the plot is staged, trite, and there are many leaps of fortune and thought that lead to the plot’s resolution. Great, but typical - and sort of pat - Reacher action, fights. Dad should have done more than be lead author, he should have polished the rhythm and story. Too bad it’s come to this.

Overly complicated with very little action. I have read most of the Jack Reacher novels, and liked them. This one, i stayed with it for 2 months, hoping it would get better. It never did. Hard to follow, too much detail, little action, uninteresting and unlikable characters. I gave up before finishing it. Time to move on from this series, maybe from Lee Child altogether.

Worst book ever. I could not even finish this. Don't waste the time or money on this one.

Disappointing. This seems to be mostly written by Andrew Child. The words and phrases are different from his past 20 something books. The story is more far fetched than the usual Reacher story, and not as gripping as usual. I’m a huge fan but this is by far my least favorite book. Hope this isn’t a sign that Lee Child is out of ideas or getting lazy like John Patterson.

Is Lee Child using cut and paste?. I’ve been a fan of the Reacher series since their inception. This was the only one I was unable to finish. It’s almost as if the “he saw the man on the left so he pivoted and kicked him in the knee” or “he knew if he went east toward town he would find a diner” scenes were taken from previous books. Tedious, sadly, and predictable.

The Sentinel. Confusing, boring and l had to force myself to finish it— There wasn’t a sentence with more than 4 words— such a disappointment.

Confusing plot - would have been better to stop the series.. Sad day, I’m done with Jack Reacher. Never though I’d say that. The pilot is confusing and Reacher is a nothing like previous books. Bring back Lee or retire the series.

Awesome. Love how his mind works

The Sentinel. Long on words short on action. Very difficult to make to the end since so many pages were all words that filled space. Big fan of Lee Child but losing faith. Not a book that holds your interest.

The Sentinel. The best.A thriller for sure.

Surprisingly cumbersome and complex. Of all the Jack Reacher books, this is the least Jack Reacheriest. The plot line is cumbersome, the story involves single dimension double agents and undeveloped side characters. It’s not a bad read, but it’s not a Reacher novel. Reacher is an unusual character. He learns nothing during our encounters with him. He is a force of nature who follows his own set of rules and applies them to the setting where we join him. Then he departs. Suddenly. Abruptly. Immutably. Like a tornado, Reacher is there and then he is not. But this time, Reacher talks about the dark web like he knows what it is. For a guy who barely reads a newspaper and shuns property and technology, his sudden development of IT skills is at odds with his Jack Reacherieness. When he departs, he heads back to Nashville and breaks another of his few rules. This story has a “ripped from the headlines” vibe that just doesn’t serve it well. Still, it’s a Jack Reacher novel and so I bought it and read it. For the first time ever, I’m going to wait before buying the next one. I hope the author doesn’t treat us like Lucy.

New writer. Just ok.. After several pages into this it was plain there was a new writer. Same Reacher character but just enough differences to make it slightly off and kind of weird, disconcerting. Definitely not as good as Lee Child historically. I’ll try one more and may have to move on to other authors. Kind of like when Clancy passed and they’ve had other authors continue with his characters.

Not A Good Transition. That did not seem like a Lee Child at all: too rushed, sloppy dialogue, clunky plot. I hope the second book is better. It is so sad, really. I really enjoyed the Reacher series. Lee Child got better with each book. It is not like his brother is a bad writer, but he is not the master of suspense I have become accustomed to reading.

The Sentinel. This was the worst Jack Reacher book in the series. It was uninteresting and did not keep my interest.

Andrew Child isn’t Lee. Many authors have writers take over for them - usually posthumously but it is very obvious that Andrew “Child” aka Andrew Grant wrote the majority of the dialogue as it sounds nothing like Reacher. I was so looking forward to a new Reacher story but while it was good, it didn’t reflect Reacher...kind of like Tom Cruise playing Jack NMI Reacher .. too far fetched.

Sentinel. Good beginning and end. Totally lost in the middle trying to follow the plot. Not up to the level I expect from Lee Child. Hope this is not the end of an amazing series about a man all real men dream they could be.

Not quite up to snuff. Andrew needs a little work but this joint venture was pretty good. Although I felt there was too much conversation and not enough brawls. I am always fascinated by the geometry that goes into the way Jack Reacher meets opponents. There was very little of that in this book.

Good one; who is lying to whom?. Amuses with the hoped-for mix of cleverness, evil, kindness, surprise, and action... some modern tech is a challenge for an aging MP, and there’s even a cameo of wanna-be Nazis thinking a tall guy is antifa.

Downhill Slide. After 20+ Reacher books that I would rate as good to very good (and extremely re-readable), this one falls flat. It is trying too hard to be current/topical with components like Russian interference, ANTIFA, and punching Nazis. The Reacher series has done a great job of remaining current while also being apolitical. Even when Reacher was trying to prevent the assassination of a politician, we got to be engrossed in the story, not the politics. Additionally, the physical confrontations were not as fast paced and taut as I was used to. They were drawn out, verbose, and almost boring. A real letdown. Seeing Andrew Child on the byline was reminiscent of seeing the Clancy books go steadily downhill as his involvement waned and then disappeared. Hopefully Reacher gets back on track while Lee is still alive. This ranks as the weakest Reacher novel of all by a wide margin.

Something Different. I read that Lee Child had written his last book (the last one) and that his brother would continue the Reacher series. I think this book is the first work of a new author who remembers that Reacher like coffee and presses his clothes beneath any sort of mattress he can find. The excitement is good. I’ll finish it but with the slow moving filler and page long paragraphs it’s an easy book for me to put down. Half way through. I made myself finish the book. It’s horrible. I wonder how Lee Child was persuaded to allow the book to be published under his name.

Another great book. Another great book

Obviously two writers. The story isn’t too bad but some of it reads like it was written by a 7th grader. I don’t know if Lee’s younger brother is in 7th grade or if he wrote those parts but they are pretty terrible. If you can ignore those sections then it’s a half decent Jack Reacher book.

The Sentinel. This most recent of my Jack Reacher thrillers was a fast paced story of Jack again befriending and saving a stranger's life then getting all mixed up in this Computer Nerd's troubles. We meet several protagonists, a few beautiful women, and several ruthless thugs, but Jack can handle them. Surprising ending. All in all I liked it, although Jack's amazing strength was not as believable this time.

One of the best. You’d think Jack Reacher would start getting dull and his martial art skills and bar brawling days would wither on the vine…but OhNo, he is as sharp as ever and his bad guy tutorials are funny as all get out. Hooray for Jack!

The Sentinel. Jack is, as usual, a thinking man’s Neanderthal. A fun read, and timely in a way.

Reacher series deteriorated. Couldn’t even finish with 100 pages left. No interest in this story.

The sentinel. Not really up to Reacher previous standards. Extremely wordy and verbose. Save your money.

Aboveground. Wordy, yet efficient. A thriller fishing wide for the biggest catch. Guess that’s the point. And why we keep following Reacher down the road…

Y x. gracias

Disappointing. I’ve enjoyed the Jack Reacher series, up until this book. What a disappointment. Probably the last Jack Reacher book I will read.

The Sentinel. The beginning of the end for one of the greatest series and characters ever created. This book was terrible......the style, language, and plot made it impossible to get into and want to read. The characters were boring with no effort to build them out throughout the book. Lee Child has always done an amazing job of saying more with less when it comes to Reacher.....he was a chatterbox in this book and came across as way too friendly. My favorite character and series of all time.....extremely disappointed. If this is the future of Jack Reacher, then do the right thing.......with Lee Child writing one final glorious novel, taking Reacher out in style.

The Sentinel. Slow going! Thought I would never finish it, and I was saddened by the deterioration of Child’s talent.

Excellent reading!. Action continues throughout!

Great!. All comes together in the end good novel !

Save your money. Yes, Lee Child’s name is first and largest but the writing style is not, in my opinion, anywhere near as good as the old Reacher books actually written by Lee Child and no one else. The prose is awkward and the storyline confused. The characters have no real personalities (yes, even the Reacher character) and every aspect of the book is flat. Save your money. This is the worst “Reacher” book ever. Books that are “co-written” are rarely as good as those written solely by the original author but this one really lowers the bar. Shame on Lee Child for letting his name be associated with this “Reacher” book.

Disappointing. Disappointing. That does not look like Reacher

Not the best but good. I must admit I was almost swayed not to buy this book by all the bad reviews I’d read about it, but in the end I bought it, read it and liked it. It wasn’t the best Reacher novel by far, and I’ve read them all, but it was good. I gave it 4 stars because it kept me entertained. But to Mr. Child, Sir, if you do read this, I’d love to see classic Reacher again in the style of Killing Floor, which really got me hooked.

Quintessential Reacher. I read many books similar in genre and still believe Child is the best of the bunch when it comes to writing. While saddened that Lee is stepping down from the series, any changes in style due to the two Child’s collaboration in Sentinel were subtle and carried on the short, quick witted quips that make me laugh. I was captivated from the start and enjoyed the complicated plot. The cast of characters were again unique, believable, and developed appropriately for their role in this adventure. I’m not a writer, just a reader. And if everyone took the perspective that change is necessary and change is good, there will be many 5-star reviews in future Reacher novels.

So bad I could finish it. Undermine the main stream media. Heard of Hunter Biden?. So bad!

Sentinel. Great read!

Nice. Suspenseful!!!!

Great title. Fast paced, excellent plot and of course Jack Reacher!!

Waste of time and money on this one.... Has the author been watching CNN for the last four years? I used to enjoy this series but this is the last time I’ll read one. Russian collusion and a right wing conspiracy to impact our elections?

Written by someone else. Not like any other Reacher book. The character is different, the thoughts are different, the skills are different. Not the Jack Reacher we pay for

Sentinel is great.. Great read, couldn’t put it down after I started. I don’t understand the negative comments because it moved fast and kept me interested throughout the entire story.

The Sentinel. This book in the series kept you thinking. It was fast paced and hard to put down once you started reading. Definitely recommend this read.

The sentintel. I have always enjoyed jack. Read almost all your books. Have been less impressed over time. Hoped your brother would bring new energy. Alas it was the same some of the old spark but way too much unnecessary filler

A bit of a disappointment. Not as good as others in the series. Less flow and less of the predictable pattern we’ve grown to expect from reacher. This book has seams where one can see writing by two people, not one. It’s ok, but just not great like the others which were iconic.

Another Jack Reacher novel. That didn’t disappoint but kept me riveted all the way through. It’s why I never tire of a Jack Reacher novel
