One by One by Ruth Ware Book Summary

This instant New York Times bestseller and “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) from Ruth Ware follows a group of employees trapped on a snow-covered mountain.

Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

When the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy London-based tech start-up, organizes a weeklong trip for the team in the French Alps, it starts out as a corporate retreat like any other: presentations and strategy sessions broken up by mandatory bonding on the slopes. But as soon as one shareholder upends the agenda by pushing a lucrative but contentious buyout offer, tensions simmer and loyalties are tested. The storm brewing inside the chalet is no match for the one outside, however, and a devastating avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. Even worse, one Snooper hadn’t made it back from the slopes when the avalanche hit.

As each hour passes without any sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles further…one by one.

Hooked, Start to Finish. I really enjoyed this one. The beginning gets you invested in the characters, then the twists and turns of their plight leaves you unable to stop reading. I’d definitely recommend it. This was a perfect book for my flight, and I finished it by the fire place at home, which felt appropriate considering the winter setting of the story.

One by One. Erin and Danny were the only likable characters in the book. Liz was the most despicable and repulsive character from the very beginning. All others were awful, too.....spoiled, entitled, corrupt, immoral, and just creepy. It was just tortuous reading some of the long winded descriptions and trite dialogue. I should have trusted my instincts and skipped this one, but I enjoyed an earlier book by this author and had hoped for the best. It felt like reading a middle school student’s story with way too many words, superfluous and synthetic.

Fun read. Well written and entertaining

Solid Mystery. Starts slow, but doesn’t take long to get you hooked. Good read!

Tense and inventive. A very enjoyable read. Couldn’t turn the pages (so to speak) fast enough.

Fantastic!. Could not put it down. Love her books!

Really good, just predictable twist... And Then There Were None + The Guest List 10 current/former employees of a booming UK music app startup (for those of you from the States, think Silicon Valley yuppies) decide to take a holiday at a French chalet to make the biggest decision of their lives. When an avalanche hits, they and the two workers start to see what lies in the heart of (wo)men.. I enjoyed this book. It’s my first Ruth Ware (and won’t be my last). What would have made it a 5-star for me was structuring the book a bit differently so that it wasn’t obvious from before the halfway point “whodunit.” I don’t want to say much more than that for spoilers, but I think you’ll see when you get there. I did love the way she fleshed out the characters, and the way she opened each chapters. Buy this for yourself or someone looking for a no -so-cozy mystery. If you’re twisted, get it for someone about to go on their first ski trip.

Talk about suspense!. Modern day ‘whodunit’! Loved every second of this suspenseful read.

Thriller. A page turner! Finished in a day. Excellent story, scene and characters.

Really Good. I don’t like the app idea of snoop but this book was really good, and snoop did play a big part of the story.

Pretty good. A little slow to get started, predictable in some parts, but overall good.

Read it now!. So insanely good! I couldn’t put it down!!

Perfect diversion.... ... from deep, pandemic reading. No spoilers but just know it is never who or what you think. The plot pulls you down a steep mountain so to speak.

Great mystery!. The characters were easy to follow and sort out. Just enough of a thriller to keep my interest. Ruth Ware writes another good story.

Page turner. This is a great book. Fast paced thriller ! I enjoyed it from start to finish.!

Classic Ruth Ware. Loved this book! Kept me hooked all the way to the twisty end.

Couldn’t put it down!. This book was hard to put down! A very easy and entertaining read.

Obvious. This is my first RW book. She’s clearly a brilliant writer. The characters were vivid, the setting beautifully described. But the murderer was obvious from the very beginning. I kept hoping and hoping it was all a lead up to a twist, but the twist never came. The conclusion with who did it and what happened after went on wayyyyy too long, like the author needed to meet word count. That said, I devoured the book. But, do know there are no twists. It’s painfully, in your face obvious from the very start.

Too predictable. Save your money.

Couldn’t put it down!. Suspenseful and great characters!

Easy fun read!. Big Ruth Ware fan and this did not disappoint! A great whodunit.

One on onehe. I was disappointed. Characters not believable. The end was disappointing

Slow start but worth the read. Gosh this book had a slow start, I realized I was almost halfway through before it really started picking up and I couldn’t even keep every single character straight even towards the end because there was quite a few but reading the whole thing through was worth it. I love anything Ruth Ware writes but tbh this wasn’t my absolute favorite. Still worth a read imo though! Erin is super likeable as a character and the storyline is so unique.

One by One. Great read!

Meh. Not a terrible read but nothing I’d recommend. Wasn’t expecting literary greatness but still felt underwhelmed. Most of the characters are a caricature of a “type”. Twists and turns were predictable.

Loved. Ruth does it again. I actually listened to the audiobook. Between her and Imogen Church performing, I was spellbound. Amazing as always and I can’t wait for another!

Good, but not her best…. I like Ruth Ware and generally she keeps me guessing until the end. This story was good and the characters were believable and well written. I did have the plot pegged early on though which makes it difficult to read through. Overall good.

I love Ruth Ware but this was awful. Weak.

Pretty decent. A slow build with a fairly obvious “who did it” but stimulating and enjoyable nonetheless.

One By One. I loved the psychological buildup and crescendo, but the crescendo and the wrap up were a little too long to give the book a perfect rating, but definitely a 5 Star rating and a strong recommended reading.

Another great read. Great read like her other novels. Suspenseful

Solid. This was a solid thriller. I love Ruth Ware and have read all her books. There isn’t a ton of character development or depth but they’re all hard to put down.

Nice ending. I love Ruth Ware’s books. She really does draw you in, even if you find most of the characters (like I did in this book) to be annoying and obnoxious. I have to agree with the people who found the big “twist” of whodunnit to be predictable, but in my opinion the ending makes up for it. When something ends up as, “ok, so it’s exactly who I thought would be the culprit”, I tend to lose interest, but the author did a great job of hooking you in to see what happens afterwards & how it ends, regardless. She has a great writing style. Almost a 5-star for me.

Not her best. This book was fairly entertaining but seems to fall short of the author’s usual stories. The ending was entirely predictable.

Very appropriate. Superb and quite well written.

Amazing novel!. I could not put it down. I highly recommend it.

Ready to Ski now. Excellent read! One of the best written by Ruth Ware.
