Apropos of Nothing by Woody Allen Book Summary

The Long-Awaited, Enormously Entertaining Memoir by One of the Great Artists of Our Time—Now a New York Times, USA Today,
Los Angeles Times, and Publisher’s Weekly Bestseller.

In this candid and often hilarious memoir, the celebrated director, comedian, writer, and actor offers a comprehensive, personal look at his tumultuous life. Beginning with his Brooklyn childhood and his stint as a writer for the Sid Caesar variety show in the early days of television, working alongside comedy greats, Allen tells of his difficult early days doing standup before he achieved recognition and success. With his unique storytelling pizzazz, he recounts his departure into moviemaking, with such slapstick comedies as Take the Money and Run, and revisits his entire, sixty-year-long, and enormously productive career as a writer and director, from his classics Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Annie and Her Sisters to his most recent films, including Midnight in Paris. Along the way, he discusses his marriages, his romances and famous friendships, his jazz playing, and his books and plays. We learn about his demons, his mistakes, his successes, and those he loved, worked with, and learned from in equal measure.

This is a hugely entertaining, deeply honest, rich and brilliant self-portrait of a celebrated artist who is ranked among the greatest filmmakers of our time.

Rmpage. Love it! It’s like watching his movie! Funny! Entertaining! Witty! So Woody!

Badly written. I am astonished at how badly-written this book is. I’ve read Allen's writing before, and thought he was a decent-enough writer, but his attempt at a memoir is terrible. First of all, the very first line has an obscure reference to Holden Caulfield. Does he not realize that Catcher in the Rye is not the touchstone it once was? Or is Allen's inability to see the changes in the world one of the reasons his last number of movies have been terrible? The book could have used a strong editor, or an editor at all. Some sentences are so labored and confusing that they have to be read a number of times to be understood. And his writing is just…bad. Perhaps age has diminished his writing ability or his ability to form coherent sentences, and his vanity prevented him from seeking an editor who could have corralled it into a wonderful book. This ain't it. I’m very disappointed.

Woody the wit. Who knows woody better than woody? Imagine if Jesus wrote a tell all book and was excoriated by the me too son of Sinatra ? Mia’s mea culpa is to not let go and move on. Don’t let one man imprison you. Woody is a great American story and his should be told the master.

Worth reading... I assume you admire Woody Allen movies or you wouldn’t be here. For what it’s intended to be it’s 5 stars from me. I’m glad he didn’t go into more detail on the making of each movie… I could’ve used a little less on everybody he ever worked with… I intended to skip the #MeTooStuff but once I got into it I couldn’t stop. What a nightmare of a story all the way around. It’s worth hearing his side..which you probably haven’t. The fact that it was so difficult to get this published is very very disturbing.

A great read - explains a lot. I have enjoyed many Woody Allen movies over the years, but had a long period of not being drawn to them. After reading this book, I want to get back to seeing the ones I have missed. Kind of like losing interest in a musical artist for many years only to return refreshed and remembering all that you loved about them. Greatly appreciated his clear telling of the allegations, particularly given the muddled reporting in the news. Found innocent after two detailed investigations - evidence provides the more convincing story. Happy to support him with the purchase of this book. Now just wish I could see the recent movies.

Apropos of Nothing. I was skeptical about even buying this book. I had already formed an opinion of the scandal surrounding Woody Allen in the intensive press coverage received - especially after his adopted Daughter Dylan Farrow came out with her damaging accusations during the #MeToo movement with an open letter to the New York Post in March of 2014. Also, I read Ronan Farrow’s book “Catch and Kill” which has made Farrow one of the #MeToo movement’s favorite reporters. However, after reading Woody’s book, I have to say that Woody’s book has me seeing his side of the truth. And his book is so much more than just defending himself against the scandal. He has had such a long and storied career. And within this long career he has been a long time supporter of so many actresses which most support him to this day. Woody’s book was pulled by its original publisher Hachette Book Group. Of course, this came after complaints from another author - Ronan Farrow who’s book “Catch and Kill” was also published by Hachette. Farrow made a statement linking Mia to the #MeToo Movement - in response to his Mother’s accusations about Woody “She’s nuts, she’s jealous’ is an old and thin deflection tactic in child abuse cases, but she was in the crosshairs of that at a time when a certain echelon of a powerful man in Hollywood with the right team of publicists really held all the cards. In retrospect I see the parallels to some of the systems that I’ve reported on.” Read Andrea Peyser’s article in the New York Post March 28, 2020 entitled “Mia Farrow has finally succeeded in Destroying Woody Allen - and We Should be Afraid”

Apropos of Nothing. First of all. Thank you Arcade for publishing this book. Too bad for you Hatchet. You proven yourself to be an Unpublisher. Nothing makes me more determined to read a book as for anyone to try and prevent me from reading it. “And now for the rest of the story”. Thank you Woody for writing it. I look forward to seeing “A Rainy Day in New York soon.

Pure nonsense. If it were free it still would not be worth the price

The middle class man with a US$26 million house. Just a middle class guy who dotes on his wife and kids. A nonentity compared to the many wonderful people he’s met (who he name-drops shamelessly). Still, lots of laugh out loud anecdotes, the joy of beautiful women and the grimly serious tale of his vindictive ex. And yet it was all worth it, he is happy with his lovely and charming wife, still has plenty of moviemaking in him. This is a lovely and funny book, and for that reason I recommend it highly. But if you are an aspiring filmmaker looking for tips, it falls short. There are few clues for the reason for his success. He started as someone who wrote better gags than anyone else. The most important thing about a movie, in his view, is the writing, and I think he’s right. Then he grew into directing movies, which in his eyes is just pointing the camera at the right places and telling people to do what he needs to have done. And if his actors are uncomfortable with a line or have suggestions for improvements, he’s going to use the feedback to make the films better. So he basically makes the movies as head of a bunch of professionals, including on screen talent, that he trusts to do the job. If you want to learn the true story of #MeToo and his smearing by Mia Farrow, his argument for his innocence is very convincing, primarily because he quotes court investigations that were made very carefully, with no apparent bias. To anyone interested in our justice system, the continued attacks on him are disturbing. If this is your interest in reading the book, buy it. It’s very clear and compelling. Other than that, its the story of a middle-class guy who made it big but remained modest and self-effacing. You get the feeling he can barely believe his incredible good fortune. This is a good man who succeeded in life, love and pretty much everything else. It’s a great way to remember him

A+++. Woody Allen is hilarious and has a way of viewing the world with witty perspective at his own foibles and his priorities are both relatable and insightful! I truly enjoyed this book!

Fantastic Memoir. A terrific look back at a memorable career told with his customary wit and self deprecation. Highly recommended.

Honest Bio. Woody Allen reveals himself for who he is. He is witty and socially awkward and talented and phobic. I liked him much more after reading this book. He did a very persuasive job to exonerate himself from false and distorted allegations. I am convinced he is an honest man, a little odd but honest. He was also gracious towards everyone he worked with and if he found fault he blamed himself.

Sexual assault. In 1993, Woody Allen sexually assaulted his 7 year old daughter in the attic of his girlfriends home.

Loved every line of it!. Great reading for troubled times.

No good deed ever went unpunished. I hope Woody becomes vindicated. Great writing, hilarious chuckles and ironic tragedy.

A Great Look into the Life and Films of Woody Allen. My introduction to Woody Allen came when I was a kid and my dad showed me the film, Bananas. Since then, I’ve made it a point to see all of Woody Allen’s films. I’ve also read his books, as well as countless interviews and articles published over the years. In Apropos of Nothing, Allen discusses all of his films and sprinkles writing and filmmaking advice throughout the pages. What the book does best, however, is give us a glimpse into the life of the man behind these great films. Allen tells his story in chronological order, but veers off on topics as they come up. Each time, however, he makes his way back to the established timeline. I loved reading Apropos of Nothing and I didn’t want it to end.

Yuck. I believe Dylan—no matter how much he turns on the charm. No more Woody Allen for me.

Misconceptions. When I told my daughter an inspiring actress that I bought the Allen’s book she said how could you ? He is a child molester little did she know how far away from the truth she was ... I m always scared about the masses this books explains why .

Apropos of Nothing. Brilliantly honest and inspiring storytelling.

Admirable Woody.. Perfectly written and wonderful to read. Such admiration for Woody and his body of work. Frightening how a woman scorned really lives to ruin his life.

Terrific!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. ‘Reading for pleasure’ has never been truer of a phrase. I always love Woody Allen and I am grateful for his work.

Honest. Honestly, I don't know what I expected. Love his films for all sorts of reasons. A bridge in American humor that can be fairly said to personally have paved the road from Chaplin & Groucho to Seinfeld & Larry David. As a woman reader, an academic child mental health professional who has lived the proto-feminist experience, I am so sad & horrified by the obvious wrong done to him in the perverted name of Me-too-ness. A beautiful soul! This book has been a fine read in the time of Covid, providing escape to the long & wonderful life work of this amazing writer & film director.

Trash. A witty tome is not enough to rebut all the allegations against you, Woody. You’re fooling again only those who’ve already been fooled by you.

Woody Allen. Very much enjoyed reading about his life growing up and how he got started. He’s a great American writer and film maker. On the level of Williams Miller and Simon. And his films are wonderful because he is such a great writer! He’s an American Treasure!

Truth is on Woody’s side…that Konigsberg kid is alright. I wish Woody and Soon Yi only the best lives… Good Karma belongs to them…

A great read except for one chapter. Really enjoyed this overall, but found the chapter describing his squabbles with Mia Farrow far too detailed and tedious, so I skipped it. The book would have been better if that had been left out or much shorter.

couldn’t put it down. A great read. If you are a Woody Allen fan, you won’t be disappointed. Thank god he got this written before he exits Earth.

I promise it won’t disappoint!. Have loved Woody Allen my entire life. Asked to name people that have ever lived or continue to do so, that I’ve never met and in some cases never could, who are not related to me yet have actually made a difference in my life, Woody Allen is one if not “the” one. As a writer/director/actor he has a feel that can be absorbed. This book helped give me a broader sense of the man and a glimpse into what rattles around in that wonderful noggin. I promise it won’t disappoint.
