A Time for Mercy by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a courtroom drama that The New York Times says is "riveting" and "suspenseful."

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many readers know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy.

Excellent. Jake Brigance is back. I loved this story. Great read!!

Great read. Like this one a lot. Had to get into it but once I did it was great.

Couldn’t put it down. Great read as are all of Grisham’s books! More of the Jake Brigance series please!

DO NOT READ THIS BOOKGreat book until terrible ending. This well written character portrait has all the Grisham excellence. Until it simply doesn’t end. The story just abruptly stops. No conclusion, not even a saved by the Gods! Just nothing.as if they forgot the final chapter. I am Grisham fan, have loved all his books. I wish I never started this book. If you are a Grisham fan, you will feel as if you got a gut punch in the end. The book is so excellent, instructive, sensitive, multiple plot lines, and then? NOTHING. This book is writer malpractice, if will tear your heart out in a nasty way.

Excellent Book. It is a wonderful book and very hard to put down. I enjoyed it immensely.

MUST READ. This was a roller coaster worth riding. It had me on my toes from the very start.

A wonderful book. This was a great read.John Grisham is my favorite author and he has inspired me to start writing fiction of my own.Ive been writing since I was 14.I’m 45 now,and I thought that I’d try my hand at writing a full book.Thank you John Grisham.Keep up the good work.A writer writes always.

Good read. It’s as if John Grisham is back! Yea!

A Time for Mercy. John Grisham, as usual, provides another outstanding book!

A Time For Mercy. A book written by formula. I expected better, but everyone reaches burnout.

good read. good read

Here’s a hopeful Win for Jake!. Thanks for the beautiful story about the fragility of life

Quick read. Great read! Not the ending I expected or hoped for, but fun read nonetheless

Great story. Very engaging and enjoyable

Time for mercy. Grisham is a great wordsmith and story teller but the ending was a dud. Wrap it up. Left me flat.

A Time for Mercy. A sad story about abuse and rape of a 14-year old girl plus the trial of her 16 yr old brother for murder of the horrible monster (policeman) who I would have found deserving of death.

Good read. The story line is interesting and complex, with lots of detail. However, the ending was anticlimactic. Thus, the lower rating.

A Time For Mercy. This book is another book that follows Jake Brigance. First time we saw him was in" A Time to Kill.” I found myself enjoying this book. I felt that I was fully into the plot and the characters. It ended on a high-note, but I felt that the ending was possibly a lead-in to another book. I like John Grisham’ novels. I highly recommend this book.

A bit of a yawn. Not quite any excitement. I could’ve gone without reading. The end gave nothing.

Good book. The book kept me interested until the end. The ending was anticipated. I judge a book is good when after done reading, I wonder what happened next to the characters. I wonder happening to these characters.

The Ending is Not Complete. Love Jake Brigance and the cast of characters but this story does not have a conclusive ending.

No hum. Was a great read until it petered out at the end. Like the author did not know how to wrap the whole thing up. It just sort of faded away with no surprises. I was hoping for more

Outstanding read!. Exceptional and intriguing!

Once Again. John, once again, has written a book that kept me up at night and waking up early to find out what is next. The flow is just impeccable to me the reader. It is like he is sitting across the table reading his book to me.

A time for mercy MW216. I enjoyed reading a time for mercy. I have read most of Gresham’s books, practically all of them. I found this to be well written fast-paced and quite enjoyable

Time for Mercy. A typical Grisham read......

Hard to believe Grisham wrote this. The narrative repeats itself ad nauseam as if the publisher only cared about word count. The name Carl Lee Bailey is used so many times one could easily forget who the actual defendant in this story is. Tedious and only marginally entertaining.

Great book. One of the best books I’ve read this year! Must read. Mark

Expected More from John. The story was development was very slow and sometimes burdensome read. I do appreciate the charter development but little payoff for the reader. Still a fan.

A time for mercy. Very disappointing. I made it through 120 pages only due to my reluctance to admit I had wasted $14.00. The characters, the setting and dialogue are all boring and bland. It gets some very favorable reviews on here. I assume the writing must improve later on , but I’m not willing to stick it out. After being disappointed a couple of times by Grisham’s later works, I’m beginning to believe that his initial books were ghost written instead of the other way around.

A time for mercy. Terrible book....I miss the old John Grisham. This just seemed to be thrown together.....maybe he needed a new yacht.

Give Me More Jake. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that it ended. My favorite Grisham book has always been A Time to Kill, so I was thrilled to discover Sycamore Row. And by the time I finished A Time for Mercy, my thirst for more Jake reached an all time high. I sincerely hope Grisham continues to share these characters and location with us.... My only concern is that he needs to pick up the pace! I’m not getting any younger.

Mercy Denied. Not Grisham's best. Started hot, but died in a pool of slow courtroom procedure. Actual court was riveting but was way at the end and needs a sequel to complete the story arc.

A Time for Mercy. Another book impossible to put down. A typical John Grisham book absolutely. Can’t wait to start the next one. I have read every one of his books. If you like reading his are the ones to read.

A Question To Ponder. A very interesting question sets the tone very nicely

Mercy. The best of J.G by far this book kept me up until the wee hours of the night three nights in a row.

The Best. I couldn’t put this book down. I looked forward to getting up early to grab a cup of coffee and start reading. I love Jake, Lucien Judge Noose and even the Kofer clan !

Another Perfect Grisham Novel!. When I see a teenager involved in a murder, I always feel luke they should be tried as an adult. Thus book made me think deeply about that opinion...

Absolutely a great read.. A fantastic read. Many of Grisham’s books are great and keep you on edge throughout. This did no disappoint. Anxiously awaiting the next publishing.

Not as good.. Too much filler to keep me interested. Did not feel or read like a John Grisham book. I would have sworn it was written by a ghost writer.

Captivated. I could stop reading, thanks Mr. G for another awesome book. If you are fan of his books you have to read this series. I will miss Jake in the courtroom.

ATime For Mercy. Grisham is a great story teller. While this book lacked thes. Suspense of the Firm it read well.As a lawyer who has tried cased I was impressed with the authenticity. I did have one question: Keira’s baby was the sole heir toKofer’s assets. Whatever else he had the house was worth quite a bit( relatively speaking). Why not have the adopting parents appointed as guardians and make the money available for her later on in life. The adoption would not cut off the child’s right to inherit. I am sure Grisham was aware of this but wonder why he chose to ignore it. Better that the Money benefited the child than his redneck family. John Farrsuto

A great read.. Always a great story teller.

Not worth the time. Too much idle detail that did not advance the story or illuminate the characters. There was also no resolution to any of the storylines. Very disappointed.

A true masterpiece. This was an outstanding novel and I could hardly keep myself away from it. I felt a personal connection to the characters in the book and the range of emotion extending across bursting in laughter to crying tears. Wonderful book. I hope a movie comes from it.

The ending…..ummmm?!?!?. I loved this book and then it just ENDED!!!! Seriously John?? WTH!! I’m bummed! Of course I’ll read more but it was a major let down for sure! That’s the reason it’s 3 ⭐️ instead of 5!

Mercy. Another great Grisham book. Read a Time to Kill many years ago. Will definitely go back and reread.

Great legal intricacies! Love it!. Never a question about the story details with the great writing skills of Grisham

“Too short!”. As with any writings I’ve loved reading, thus one was too short! Will miss the characters!

Good ending to a series. A good wrap to the series. Small towns and small counties can only be so convincing. That is how many dramas can occur there?

Page turner. Great read, but leaves many loose ends, unlike the previous Brigance books

A Grisham of old.. I could barely stop reading long enough to eat a meal.
