The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah Book Summary

"The Bestselling Hardcover Novel of the Year."--Publishers Weekly

From the number-one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes a powerful American epic about love and heroism and hope, set during the Great Depression, a time when the country was in crisis and at war with itself, when millions were out of work and even the land seemed to have turned against them.

“My land tells its story if you listen. The story of our family.”

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows.

By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive.

In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it—the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

Great read you won’t soon forget. I read this a few months ago and have read several books since. Somehow I keep thinking of the characters in this book. Hannah does a great job with character development and this book really displays that skill. Great read.

Amazing. I was rooting for Elsa the entire time. The timeline of this book is great, it doesn’t drag on at all. I won’t give anything away, but I wanted more for her and her family. I think it still turned out great, I just wish Elsa found her voice sooner. She had SO much to offer.

I mean, awesome. Kristin Hannah does it again

Four Winds. A riveting saga of a family living in Texas in the 1930’s during the Dust Bowl. The main character, Elsa survives one darkness after another and then sets out to find “ hope” as she and her two children migrate to California, only to find that dreams can’t keep you warm, feed you, or make you brave. As they fight environmental disasters, greed of those whom they work for, and their own fears Elsa and her family realize that the only thing that really remains is love…. This historical fiction novel depicts an era during the Great Depression along the Great Plains. All those pictures I saw as a girl stydying the Dust Bowl came hauntingly alive. Pictures of families living in unbelievable circumstances. This story written during the Pandemic describes Americans who turn against other Americans because of fear, greed, and ignorance. These vices prove to be even blacker than the dust that moved over the Great Plains for over a decade.

Page turner.. Really enjoyed everything about this book. Learned a lot about the dust bowl and how history continues to repeat itself.

Touching story. You can feel the characters’ heartache in all the issues they have to deal with. So beautifully written

The Four Winds. Once I started I could not put it down! Great read!

Hard pass. Possibly the most depressing book I’ve read ever. I forced myself to the end thinking that surely something good will happen. NOPE. Move along, folks.

Finding a voice has never been so moving.. Thoroughly engaging, real women are the backbone of Hannah’s works. The Four Winds brings the Dust Bowl era to life through Elsa & Loreda. Leaning into the challenges of the mother-daughter dynamic on multiple fronts, Hannah crafted a moving story of family, faith, love, loss, LIFE! Highly recommended.

Captivating. Powerful and moving with character development so deep that you feel their struggle, pain, courage and love.

Enjoyed it. I enjoyed the parallels to modern day topics - immigration, politics, recession, faith. Good character development. Book moves a little slow in the middle. Overall good read .

Warrior. This book moved me in so many ways. Tingles through my body , smiling from laughter and tears of sadness. Great read. I highly recommend this book.

Suspenseful and deep. This book gives you an up close and personal perspective on the lives of the people who experienced the Great Depression through the 1930s. You read about women with true grit and strength and courage. Is it is real, is is raw, and it is amazing.

An incredible novel!. Well done Kristin Hannah! You took me back to the 1930’s. The parallels with our current crisis went straight to my heart. Thank you!

Depressing. Well written but very depressing.

Greatness. Heart wrenching read but such a joy

Four winds. This book is a page turner. Kristin Hannah does such a fabulous job developing her characters and making you feel like you are experiencing it along with the characters. You will not be able to put this book down!

Best book I’ve read this year !. I’m behind on this one it’s old I know but what a inspirational great story.

Fast read. This is the first book in a while that I’ve read through quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I even cried towards the end and had strong emotions rattle me. The story isn’t something I would usually go for so I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it so much. I only picked up this book because it kept popping up in the recommended section. I just grabbed another book by this author so I hope it will be a good read as well.

Mediocre and predictable. Premise of the novel is interesting. However, characters were one dimensional and the writing was mediocre at best. I advise readers to skip this one.

Too repetitive. Good story but too repetitive. Not my favorite.

Good insight into the dust bowl. This is a great historical fiction book that gave me a better idea about how life was like for survivors of the dust bowl. I was confused at intimacy part in the beginning but it got better after. The main character is a strong headed woman willing to do anything for her kids. It did seem like everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I give it 4 stars because it kept me wanting to read and I learned something new.

The Four Winds. I loved every page.

A life of struggle. I kept reading and waiting for Elsa’s life to get better. Mired in so much misery and despair. It left me unsettled. A do very sad…

Excellent. Great historical fiction piece

Four winds. Just an absolutely wonderful book.

Incredible. Hooked me from the first page and I couldn’t let go till the end. Another great story by this great author.

Great read. I only gave it a four because it took a while to take hold of me. But when it finally did I couldn’t put it down.

Four Winds. I couldn’t put this book down. I felt like I was a migrant living during the terrible Dust Bowl trying to survive. My heart raced at thrilling points and I cried near the end. It was a fantastic read.

Refreshing and enlightening. The way this story is weaved through history is beautifully written so well you can imagine the sights and smells. Kristen Hannah has captured a part of Americas past rarely if ever mentioned and brought it to life in a manner that will touch and change you.

Okay. I was a little weary to read this book because of the varying reviews. However, I didn’t hate it. It opened my eyes to the hardships faced by those during that era and made me feel grateful and blessed for all that I have. It is a bit of a slow read in my opinion. The ending broke my mama heart and I did shed a few tears. I feel as though some parts were very repetitive and some parts carried on for a little too long. All in all, it was an okay book and I’m not sure if I would recommend this one to anyone.

She does it again. If you loved the nightingale you’ll love this as well!

As good as The Nightingale!. I thoroughly loved this book! Even though I cried through a lot of it!

Wonderful. Wonderful ! Inspirational story of a mother who finds her strength to love and protect her family in a harsh rich man’s world that existed during the “dust bowl” and early wealthy landowner years and the poor field workers surviving on pennies a day…

Immersive tale. While the story of the Depression has so many sad tales, this book immerses you in one strong woman’s will to survive despite not just the odds, but so many people against her. It will leave you thinking for days after.

Beautifully imagined!!. I have read all of Kristin Hannah’s books and this is her best work❤️

Great book. Kristin Hannah never disappoints. Filled with historical information- you will feel like you are living through the depression with these characters. A great story about life in the 1930’s. Your eyes will be opened to what horrible conditions these people lived through.

Outstanding book!. I am 74 years old and was born in western Oklahoma. I remember my grandparents talking about those horrible years. Outstanding book!!!

Awesomeness. I LOVED this book. It made me laugh, thinking of motherhood. And also made cry thinking of people I have lost. Great read!!! Highly recommend

Good book!. Moves faster than the plot summary suggested.

Great Read. From the first page to the last page, I was mesmerized reading about the life story of a strong woman who lived through the difficult history of America in the 30’s.

Beautifully written story but no fairytale ending. I have heard such wonderful things about the author and my book club decided we’d tackle this thick tome. The story of this woman’s life is incredibly compelling and paints a bleak picture of life for women in the Great Depression and into the Dust Bowl. As a native Texan who drives through this tiny town every other year (headed to Colorado), I was intrigued to read about the town during its time of prosperity. But the life of a woman who’s always been told she’s unlovable is a tough road. I still encourage you to dive in & swim to the finish, if only to see what those days required of a brave woman.

Great book. Wonderful book, cried many times. Amazing historical narrative

Honest, Gritty, and Real. This is a heartfelt and well-researched novel about life and love in the Dust Bowl.

Such a great book. The depth of this book is indescribable. The characters, the time period, historical references, the character growth and relationship growths. Just so good, recommend it!

You have to read this book!!!. This is the best book I have read in years and I am an avid reader!! Absolutely loved it! The plot keeps you hanging on and you just can’t put it down. It’s so easy to get attached to the characters, I found myself paging ahead at times because I was so worried for them. What was going to happen next?! I don’t often read books twice but this one might be the exception. I highly recommend this book!!!

A Must Read. Enthralling. I could not put this book down. Read for hours. Thanks

Just okay.. I was surprised to see so many rave reviews about this book- I thought it was just okay. I love stories about characters surviving hardships, (books like White Oleander & The Glass Castle are some of my favorites.) So I thought I would really enjoy this. However, I was put off by the typical “insecure woman protagonist meets handsome hero & suddenly becomes empowered because he told her he thinks she’s beautiful!”trope. The characters felt flat & uninspiring. The last third of the book was really hard to get through, the plot point with the workers strikes just dragged on, it felt like I was reading the same scenes over & over for about 250 pages. The writing style was also just okay- a little too much melodrama for me. There was a lot of repetition in the writing, a lot of unnecessary adjectives- it felt like the author was picking words straight out of the thesaurus & just plugging them into each sentence, but it didn’t always work, & at times, the inconsistent narrative voice took me out of the story. I saw it through to the end but really skimmed through the last 70 pages or so. I wish it had been more impactful, but I wasn’t invested enough in the characters. I really wanted to love it, but it just wasn’t quite there for me.

Loved this book! 5 stars!. I absolutely loved this book so much! I loved almost every character at the start of the book. With Kristin’s writing, I had even loved Rafe, who turned out to not be the greatest husband/father in the world. I knew that the dust bowl, following the stock market crash, and leading to the Great Depression, was extremely hard times. I guess since I have lived through difficult times and stock market crashes myself, I didn’t really imagine or put myself into the shoes of those people of the Great Plains who were destroyed by the dust bowl storms. This book made me laugh, cry, feel curious enough to research and read up more, as well as inspire me, and reminding me how grateful I am to live in todays times. I have read quite a few books so far this year, and I think this might be my favorite of the 20ish ones from my 2023 list. Also, Elsa Martinelli is my hero!

TG Rd. My Grandparents and Parents lived through the Depression. It carved a deep cut in their souls, but the persevered. Parts of this story tore at my heart, but I am glad I read it.

Tough read. Not as tough as living through those times. Day after day after day after day. Hardship only a mother could endure. Courage is not the absence of fear. Well written.

A Stunning Book. Relevant for all times, this book reminded me of John Steinbeck’s writing, who is my favourite author. Told from a woman’s perspective, however, it illuminates all the questions I asked both my sets of grandparents, and my mom and dad of the Great Depression, but from a very different lens that is usually in our history books. My grandfathers were both involved in union formation, one in Val d’Or, Quebec, one in Windsor, Ontario. As was my father. Both my brother-in-law and I have been union reps as well. Fighting oppression coming from a source of hierarchy and greed seems to be in our genes. I could relate to Elsa’s daughter’s character especially. This book, with its core of writing about humanity’s fight against financial oppression should be required reading in all high schools. A.F. Riosa

Amazing!. Wonderfully written with rich colorful characters. Gripping novel that shows the horrors of the great depression and the poverty that ensued from American greed. Another great novel by Kristin Hannah.

Another Wonderful Novel. Thank you for another wonderful novel!! I couldn’t put this down and I was sad when I was nearing the end. Can’t wait for another!
