The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel Book Summary

Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Money—investing, personal finance, and business decisions—is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.

Amazing Book. Highly recommend

One of my favorites!. Easy to understand plus a great lesson on behavioral finance.

Extremely good. You have to read this book no excuse

Eye Opener. This book is a great addition to your kit for financial independence. At the bare minimum, it provides an opportunity for you to see the current mentality of American society.

MSK.

Essential Money Book. I would highly suggest this book as one of many for anyone looking to get starting in their personal finance journey. There’s so much out there about money, and so much to steer you wrong, this book will set you on a path forward.

Financial Health Tips. The Psychology of Money offers common insights on how to manage and conceptualize money. There is value here, as it positively altered my perspective on personal monetary policies. To be concise: this is a light, ease read but worthwhile nonetheless. Think of it as a collection of pithy financial health tips. If you’re looking for theory or algorithms, this is not that book.

Great Read. Interesting and very useful perspectives on Money.

Worth reading if you appreciate finance and money. Solid book, easy to read. A less academic approach to behavioral economics. If I were a squirrel collecting nuts, this book would help other squirrels learn why that behavior will be beneficial. Just read it!

Insightful book!. Very insightful book. Gained a great deal of financial perspectives from the book. Highly recommended! What a great way to start off a New year 2022! Happy new year

Amazing. Greattt read. Woww I’ve learned so much

Such an easy read. I was looking for a financial guidance book when I stumbled upon this gem. I am a business major who studies finance quite a bit. The author takes complicated topics to understand and the importance behind them in your life and explains it in such an easy to comprehend story style. Every principle learned in this book is taught through stories and personal testimonies of some of the most successful financial role models in the world. I found myself unable to put the book down because I was so excited to hear how the author would explain the next topic. The author makes the next chapter so enticing like a tv show where you just can’t wait for the next episode to come out so you can watch it. So many people ask the questions, “why why why?” About everything. This books explains the why to every single topic so there is no question left over. Amazing book. Highly recommend you take the time to read it, you won’t regret it!

Interesting. Loved the historical background on it! Big econ nerd here

Excellent Book. As a person who is about to retire in his 50’s, I kept thinking about how I would have had this book in my 20’s. I would have been able to retire 10 years ago.

Great breakdown on Money. Love the stories that explain the meaning by some of the financial issues that goes on in our society.

The perfect book to start the year off with.. Going into 2024, I’ve been focusing more on setting effective financial goals, which include ridding myself of unnecessary debt, living below my means, and saving for the rainiest of days. This book did an amazing job of explaining how someone can take this mindset and amplify it 10 fold. It feels like I’m talking to a financial advisor as I read this book. I highly recommend it!

Great book. It’s an easy read, very basic, good investment strategies.

Eye opening. Every investor should read this book.

Informative. The more I read the more I learned. The information in this book gave me a different perspective on money.

Excellent and practical insights. The control of your time and whatever makes you sleep at night! Go for it!

A must read!!!. Great book ! If you are on the path of wealth this one here will keep you going and not feel desperate when one doesn’t see results.

Fantastic. Unlike every other get rich quick book, I absolutely loved understanding the psychological aspect behind saving and growing your money! Highly recommend this book to everyone regardless of stage in life.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!!!!. I’ll admit that I was kind of thrown off at how the layout was different from other wealth books I’ve come across. It was very informative in a simple way. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Good Book 3.5/5. While it’s a small book it still felt maybe 30 or 40 pages longer than needed but overall a really nice read.

Reread several times to cement concepts. Great book worth the money IMO.

Awesome Read. The material in this book is honest and transparent. Recommend strongly to anyone about to venture into adulthood or in the middle of it

Title fits what he talks about.. This book was very good and informative, but for me there were too many stories and I understand that you’re trying to make us see a point of view that we may not have had before that story, but I would still like to be able to take away more key pointers, something in this book that I feel was not there. This book is definitely overhyped.

Concise excellence. A financial journey in learning what motivates people to make decisions. This should be read by everyone trying to understand or learn from themselves.

Good read. Practical. Simple. Easy read.

Great book. Morgan has said a lot of things and all seems true. At least for now. And for foreseeable future.

Great Book, Mind Opener.. Great book so many gems were dropped. My two favorite ones were “Everyone’s life is a continuous chain of surprises” and “Save. Just Save. You don’t need a specific reason to save. Eventually we all experience an huge expense that we didn’t plan for simply because we never expected it.” Another great takeaway was that you don’t need a job that pays more you need a plan that saves more.

This book was amazing. I absolutely love his deep and comprehensive view of economics as it would relate to our behavior and psychology

Simply wonderful!. What a fantastic read! The postscript is reason enough to want to buy and read this book. I have yet to find a more perfect synopsis of America’s economic history and the resultant actions of us as American consumers, in a concise yet thorough examination. This book also bucks the trend of the proverbial, “Everyone should do this with their money” ideal. It brings up excellent points to consider but that ultimately, those money decisions need to make sense for you and your family. Highly recommended!

Yay. Great

Was a fantastic book for gaining deeper insights about money. Learned so much!

Good beginning and great end. Most of the book was slow going but worth the read.

Alright. It was ok read.

Wow. A perspective shifter.

Great read. I really enjoyed this book. Definitely gave me a new perspective on how myself and others think about money.

Great read. An easy read very well explained and kept me motivated thru most of it

Helpful life tools, told in a fun way.. This book was great. At first, I found the book to be a bit too intuitive, so much so that it felt unnecessary to read if you had a good understanding of your financial goals and status. However, the information throughout the book begins to compound in ways that I never would have guessed. There are a ton of lessons in this book that you can apply to your life, and they aren’t necessarily exclusive to finance. I would recommend this book to anyone who is invested in both financial and personal growth. My only main gripe is that the title is a bit misleading. The “psychology” aspect of this book didn’t really have a scientific relation, which was initially my interest. The insight of the book has no connection to the field, so don’t expect it to.

Read this book. Everyone should read this book!

It’s ok. This book should be titled “The psychology of money in stock market investing”

Pochi. What a great book teaching about the different perspectives we all have when it comes to making decision about finances.

Fantastic. One of the finest books, I have ever read. Explain’s so much more than money, it explains a lot of human behavior. Fascinating read!

Great read!. If you want a book that that really opens your eyes to why you spend money, then this book if for you.

Misleading Title. This book has too many anecdotal side stories that have nothing to do with money (many are about doctors/medicine-which is understandable because his father was a doctor). But when you set out to write a book about something, it should be entirely focused on the subject. Also, he throws in a bunch of pieces of articles written by others about American history. It’s pretty much useless content. I found myself skimming over a lot of it. However, he does have some interesting stories and good advice about investing.

Insightful. Great read lots of useful tips and information.

Superb. Great book! I recommend it to all who want to take control of their financial future.

GOOD READ. Very informative!!

Unusual Insights. Not typical in approach but hugely insightful. Especially useful in showing how different people make different decisions because of different objectives. Meaning you must be clear of your own objectives, so you are not temped to follow the wrong crowd.

What should be taught in school. The psychology of money and investing decisions is so overlooked in society and educational systems that it’s no wonder why so many run into financial challenges. This book captures the fundamental reasons why there never is one “right” way when subjective minds are involved in decisions such as investing, and that topics that involve subjective minds can never rely on mathematical equations or universal strategies. I cannot stress how important the concepts in this book are, so do yourself a favour and read it.

Great book that everyone should read. It’s so true that money isn’t about being great with numbers or having lots of it. It’s about habits and mindset. This book shines a massive light on this. I believe this book will change readers financial future for the better.

Great book. This book is a great read definitely recommend this book !

Make sure you read the final chapter. The book will tell you you’ve finished 30 pages before the end, make sure you read the very last chapter, it’s important

Enjoyable. Very interesting - well worth the read.

Amazing!. A truly mind-blowing book about the psychology of personal finances.

Change the way you think about wealth. What is your definition of wealth? Changing the way you think about money and wealth will make you much happier. It will also make you wealthier. That is the message author Morgan Housel is trying to impart on you with his bestseller The Psychology of Money. Do you want to be rich? Do you want financial freedom? It’s more of a mindset than a number. This book does offer some good advice such as control your spending, avoid financial ruin and think long-term. And if you think like Housel does you should have no problems financially.

Ok Financial Advice. The book is overall a good book to read and gain good insight into psychology of money. Out of the 20 chapters I liked about 5 but that’s what “worked for me”— a term you would become very comfortable with after reading the book. Overall a good book and a good read.
