A Gambling Man by David Baldacci Book Summary

Aloysius Archer, the straight-talking World War II veteran fresh out of prison, returns in this riveting #1 New York Times bestselling thriller from David Baldacci.

The 1950s are on the horizon, and Archer is in dire need of a fresh start after a nearly fatal detour in Poca City. So Archer hops on a bus and begins the long journey out west to California, where rumor has it there is money to be made if you’re hard-working, lucky, criminal—or all three.

Along the way, Archer stops in Reno, where a stroke of fortune delivers him a wad of cash and an eye-popping blood-red 1939 Delahaye convertible—plus a companion for the final leg of the journey, an aspiring actress named Liberty Callahan who is planning to try her luck in Hollywood. But when the two arrive in Bay Town, California, Archer quickly discovers that the hordes of people who flocked there seeking fame and fortune landed in a false paradise that instead caters to their worst addictions and fears.

Archer’s first stop is a P.I. office where he is hoping to apprentice with a legendary private eye and former FBI agent named Willie Dash. He lands the job, and immediately finds himself in the thick of a potential scandal: a blackmail case involving a wealthy well-connected politician running for mayor that soon spins into something even more sinister. As bodies begin falling, Archer and Dash must infiltrate the world of brothels, gambling dens, drug operations, and long-hidden secrets, descending into the rotten bones of a corrupt town that is selling itself as the promised land—but might actually be the road to perdition, and Archer’s final resting place.

Great Read. Brings back memories of the 40’s and 50’s detective novels. Maybe you have to be of an age to truly appreciate it. Archer is a cross between face smasher and female magnet Mike Hammer by Mickey Spillane and a collection of more cerebral characters of the time. Can’t wait for the next one.

I’ve read a lot of DB’s books. This one is bad. Total and complete waste of time and money.

A REAL PAGE-TURNER. “A Gambling Man” is a roller-coaster of a ride! Many twists and turns, with suspenseful intrigue. Baldacci planted ample doses of humor in Archer’s dialogue to enhance the reader’s enjoyment. This book deserves more than five stars!

Mushroom man. This was a crude book about a very mean mushroom man who would wipe stool samples from the nearest hospital on random peoples houses and then pee smiley faces. Overall I like crude books so this was the perfect book especially since it kind of replayed my life. Must read for house poopers

Baldacci at his best. Recreation of the ‘40’s detective novels. Great story. Great characters. Dashiell Hammett would be proud!

Steak and I e Cream. Archer, Dash, and Liberty~compelling, engaging and people you want to hang with!

Balducci … excellent. Archer’s character is brought to life by a gifted storyteller. You will not be disappointed!

Balduci. Great book

Loved it!. I wanted to go back in time.

A Gambling Man. This is a post World War II murder/detective novel. Good, but not great. Certainly not Baldacci at his finest. Also very predictable.

Riveting. Fast paced, thoroughly entertaining and riveting.

Good story but very slow start. Very slow start with a lot of excessive, unnecessary details. It takes about 1/2 the book before it got interesting,

Ok Try. Not the Baldacci expected. Ok try.

Gambling man. I felt like I was being drugged through the muck, could not finish the book. YUK! Drop this character.

Great story from beginning to end.. Another Baldacci read that was fantastic. I can’t wait for the next Archer book.

Good read. Good read. Lots of twists and turns. Enjoyed this one as much as the reset of Baldacci’s books

Gambling Man. Another interesting and top notch character to follow and enjoy. The only drawback is waiting for David to deliver the next installment in the series.

Gambling Man. Excellent book as it is Fast paced. You read and the evil people become very obvious. Then the facts get figured out and you don’t want to put the book down. It all comes together at the end, and now you want David B to eat busy and write the next in the series.

Great book.. It was a wonderful book. I really enjoyed it.

Not his best work and I have read them all. Not his best. Predictable dialogue will make you roll your eyes sometimes. But I got through it so that’s a positive

Great read. Enjoyed every chapter!

Good Book. Good book. A little slow to start but heats up really nice. Enjoyed it..

Blah. I really wanted to like it but I feel like Baldacci has fallen off. Enjoyed the characters but the story became trite, campy, and a bit implausible. Glad to be finished.

Another winner by Baldacci. Couldn’t put it down but that’s all of Baldacci’s books for me!

Gambling Man was terrific!. The characters really show their stuff and before you know it, you’re in love with some them. You can ‘see’ them. I love how they are described. It’s a great story.

Great Read. With enough twists and turns to confuse the most serious reader, A Gambling Man was a great read. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a great “who dunnit.”

A fun read.. Great yarn, great characters.

A Gambling Man. It is a great trip down memory lane and a page turner. The characters were vivid, mostly and relatable. The plot is rather contrived . It was really enjoyable .

Post World War II California.. I really had to concentrate yeah order to keep up with all of the characters. Great book add the storyline.

Another great read. The master story teller does it yet again. Thanks for the great read

Very sub par for Baldacci. I’ve read most of Mr. Baldacci’s books, but recently it seems like he is just mailing it in. I didn’t even finish half of the book. Finished the first 200 pages and nothing really happened. Pages and pages go by and there is no action, no dialogue, just very poor attempts at descriptive writing. Not sure I’ll pick up any of his books anytime soon.

Pretty good. Kinda slow in spots and some unnecessary activity but a good story. I like the character

Easy reading. But with a twist...the author’s attempt to be politically correct in post WWII America.

Old time style. Fun fun read! I was born in 1946 and remember my parents talking about the film stars of those years and no TV etc. Baldacci must have had a lot of fun getting all the period stuff correct so I could really put myself into that time zone as a reader. Love the characters as well. Gosh, a character who seemingly can’t be corrupted, how refreshing.

A gambling man. Good Read.

Gambling Man. Great read, looking forward to the next case.

Great Book. Great characters and a fast moving plot. Buy it and read it!

Horrible. Total disappointment

Too many murders. Was interesting and kept me reading but way too many murders for the book to be plausible. Story and plot did not need to have half the characters killed off and the other half free. Disappointed overall.

Not the usual exciting book I expected.. This is not the usual read I expected from David Baldacci. I was disappointed. I have read every book written by Baldacci and found this to be confusing and not as thrilling as his other books. Normally, after reading the first paragraph, I cannot put his books down. This one dragged on into the middle of the book before I picked up some interest. I continued to read it but did not enjoy it. The title did not suit the plot in the book.

Excellent Read. Archer is an excellent character. This was an entertaining story with a marvellous feel for location and time. Bay Town feels real. The description of scenes are vivid. I love the supporting characters as well, especially Dash. So sad it ended quickly. But I have a feeling there will be more Archer and Dash in the future.
