Ocean Prey by John Sandford Book Summary

Fan-favorite heroes Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces on a deadly maritime case in the remarkable new novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author John Sandford.

An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver . . . a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

They're federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI's turf. When the FBI's investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport. And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers.

One of his best. I loved this book. Couldnā€™t put it down, all of Sanfordā€™s beloved characters were in it. Reading, you could tell that a whole lot of research went into this book which would make an awesome movie. I was stuck to Federal Marshall Lucas Davenports goings on in Florida and around. Definitely an ā€œedge of your seat adventure mysteryā€

Feels off. Iā€™m not sure what to say about this one. The book felt a bit off from his normal writing. Like it was written by someone else. It did not flow for me like the others. Meh.

Ocean Prey. This is just another great, fast moving, reading at 4oā€™clock in the morning book from John Sanford. Canā€™t wait for the next oneā€¦

Ocean Prey. The best. Some of the Prey books get a little dark. This one has everything you expect from Lucas and Virgil without dragging you too far down. I had to restrain myself from reading through the night to finish it. Seriously, Sanfordā€™s books arenā€™t written in one day and you need to spread them out or you miss too much .... or you can read it a second time like I always do.

Bob!. Iā€™m so bummed that Bob died. Even if it got Rae back to work and made room for Virgil to work with Lucas again. Sheesh. Poor wrestling Bob! Great book. Enjoy!

Great Book. Iā€™m a big fan of Davenport and Virgil. This was a great action packed read. I highly recommend it. I couldnā€™t put it down.

Dope Up & Down the Coast. Interesting and informative drug trafficking story. Good characters who played interesting roles. Interesting information about deep diving for drugs and precautions necessary.

Best Davenport in a while!. Maybe itā€™s Virgil and Lucas and Rae together but the storyline, dialogue and characters clicked just right for me.

Great story. Loved the book, the danger, the humor, the characters, everything. The COVID mention was unnecessary. Letā€™s stay in the fictional world please.

Lucas Never Disappoints. Lucas is the man, Ok, a fictional man but so awesome. Fantastic story line, great to see the gang back together. Looks like we met some future new characters? Always read the Prey books straight through. No spoiler alert but one gut punch moment. Loved the book just not the last chapter. I Wish instead of ending with the Bahamian woman (who we didnā€™t know anyway) Lucas had paid a visit to the family of the ā€œfallenā€ and ended with some closure for the readers. Just saying šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø Thx for another great read!!!!!

Iā€™m a Fan, but not for this book. I am along-standing fan of John Sandford and Lucas Davenport. I am crazy about Lucas but not so much about Virgil, so the story was just too long and had too many details about things that did not move the plot forward. I never thought I would say this about a Prey book but this one was almost boring.

Rick. Sandfordā€™s best yet. And thatā€™s saying a lot.

Another Gem. This was a great read, though a bit predictable

Great!. An excellent crime novel. No strained or improbable plot twists. Sanford just has a good solid understanding of how criminal investigations at this level are conducted.

Twisted plots. I have followed Lucas and Virgil for ALL of their books and loved the reads. Especially when they share a book! The subtle and not so subtle humor, is just plain fun. The continued use of characters from other adventures fits the kind of books I like to read. So getting to this book I had expectations of a great fun read that were met. What I didnā€™t expect was the tension I felt as Sanford got me deeper and deeper into the book and I started to fear that some of my well liked characters might not make it out alive! Nuff said and I always look forward to a Sanford read! Thanks John for making the COVID crap thing more endurable.

Excellent!!!!!. Nail biting suspense!! I couldnā€™t put this book down. Good one John Sandford!!!!

John Sandford never disappoints. I read this in 3 days couldnā€™t put down except when I had to do something unavoidable. Like a double book with both long parts with both Lucas and Virgil and with a new character Rae. I hope she comes back again. Great job John.

Great crossover. I went into this book nervous about whether or not I would be disappointed like I was with the last one. Short answer, no. This book brings back the Lucas of old and I couldnā€™t be happier. There was an event in this book that shattered me for a few chapters and truly brought out the Lucas Davenport fans have known over the last 30-some books. Bringing Flowers into the craziness that is the Marshalā€™s service was everything I never knew I needed. This crossover has me excited about more Prey/Flowers books and more crossovers in the future!!

Loved it. One of his best although Iā€™m bummed that Bob got killed. Bob and Rae were a good pair

Ocean Prey. Lucas is getting olderā€”but still has that edge that made this series last so long...Rae, well, Rae is The Bomb!!!

Best one in awhile.. Excellent easy read. Perfect for laying around the pool or curled up under a blanket.

Great read. Fast paced with an electrifying ending. Read it!

A great read,. Started great and never stopped. Was glad to get another Lucas and Virgil novel. The best out there

Zdzd srSdzs. SS s is azew3./2)(/. Thanks Ses

Ocean Prey: Killer Story. Read some other negative reviews about this book, but I read it and I donā€™t believe those reviewers actually read the book, more jealous than anything. The characters of Lucas, Bob, Rae, and Virgil are simply outrageous, brave, smart, tricky, and skilled: you canā€™t help but cheer them on in this incredibly smart book by Sanford. It is Lucas Davenport at his best with all his cronies, along for a crazy, intelligent, and twisting ā€œbad guys are gonna get itā€ story. Read it, youā€™ll be happy you did.

Ocean Prey. Another great Prey novel! Great work John

Ocean Prey. Another great Sanford read.

One of the best in this great series. Up to par and more

Fantastic read. I anxiously await new Sanford novels, and this one certainly was worth it. Great plot, excellent pacing, and beautifully written. If only he could write them as fast as I read them. Been a fan since the first Prey novel and this one certainly keeps me in the fold.

Done so soon. Could not put this book down! As usual with this series.

Ocean Prey. I usually like Sanfordā€™s books, and I always thought the character of Lucas Davenport was smooth, smart, and respectable. Maybe I read Ocean Prey too soon after the trial of Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd (also in Minnesota), but all of a sudden Davenport is just a thug, a little too happy to resort to violence. In fact, he is called upon to get involved because of his shady practices. No longer a fan...

Donā€™t start this book if youā€™re tiredā€¦. I needed to go to sleep to get up early and go to work. The action kept moving and moving and I couldnā€™t put it down. I couldnā€™t wait to see what happened next to Virgil and Rae. It was worth it

Ocean Prey. Found the Prey book to be as exciting and fast paced as Iā€™ve come to love. Enjoyed Lucas & Virgil talents being highlighted together and how they work off each other. Did not miss the reference to ā€œF****** Flowersā€. Flowersā€™ character has matured and heā€™s outgrown the need to be ā€œput down ā€œ by the other cops.

Prey wins again!. An avid like myself who sticks to certain authors because you know to expect a great read! I love John Sandfords characters in his Lucas Davenport series, they are reliable and like being with old friends. I have read every Prey novel and I remember every character so the history is there for me. For me this book hit the spot even though there were high and low points to read during the pandemic. However I did not enjoy the new pairing of characters that just donā€™t mix. The plot outweighed my own biases here because it was that much of a page Turner! The way the book began had me off my chair in laughter! So give this book a tryšŸ„‚šŸ¾

Great story. Good read. Weā€™ll though out. Really. enjoyed it.

Typical John Sanford. Excellent book with Lucas and Virgil (TFF). Kept you on the edge with the excitement. Definitely recommend.

Another winner for JOHN SAndford. I love Lucas Davenport and John SAndford did not disappoint with Ocean Prey.

Fast and intelligent read. Thereā€™s nothing better than a Davenport or Flowers novel except for a Davenport AND Flowers novel. Sandford delights again!!

Another great Prey. Sanfordā€™s latest is vintage Davenport with some Virgil Flowers mixed in. It gives you a fix that usually means a long wait between books. Could not put this latest one down.

Wonderful Prey. Very good Prey novel! Loved Virgil and Rae would like more of them in upcoming books!

Wow. One of his best.couldnā€™t put it down .

Worth it!. Nonstop excitement. I think Lucas and Virgil working together is always a good idea. Also, the description of the different locales were right on point. Iā€™ve been binge reading this series and this is one of the better ones.

The best. Itā€™s all fine

Hard to get interested in. Characters did not engage me. The story did not engage me. I had a hard time finishing the book and almost put it down a few times. I have never read anything by this person so I guess I now know he is just not for me.

Lucas and Virgil. Loved Lucas and Virgil together. Excellent story line. Great read.
