The Maidens by Alex Michaelides Book Summary

**THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

"Alex Michaelides’s long-awaited next novel, 'The Maidens,' is finally here...the premise is enticing and the elements irresistible."
—The New York Times

"A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read—with a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I loved The Silent Patient and that's saying something!"
—Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” (Publishers Weekly).

Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike—particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.

Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?

When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything—including her own life.

Absolutely love this author. After reading The Silent Patient, I decided to read The Maidens, and it did NOT disappoint. Michaelides is on track to becoming, if not already, one of the greatest authors within the psychological thrillers genre. Everything from world building to the relationship he crafts between the characters and the readers — there’s no way for you to see the ending coming. As soon as you thought you had it figured out, the entire story turns upside down. I really enjoy how immersive his books are and the level of psychological detail that is put into the characters. It is definitely worth the read and will leave you speechless.

His second novel comes out swinging. Twisted and shocking. Just when you think you have it figured out, it all blows up! I will be buying EVERYTHING this guy writes. The Maidens and The Silent Patient cannot be slept on! Must read!

Jaw dropper!. If you enjoyed The Silent Patient, then you are in for a treat in this book!

Suspenseful. It was a great book. I couldn’t put it down. Especially the last 4 chapters. I finished the book in 3 days. I must say the author always surprises me with the killer at the end. I guess that’s the whole point. That was the best part of the book. However, I felt that the ending kinda left me hanging. I don’t know if the author did this because there will be sequels to this book or what. But I like the ending of The Silent Patient much better. Nevertheless, great book. I would recommend it.

The Maidens. boring, predictable, repetitive. But for all the constant rambling, this book could have been completed in half the amount of pages.

Must Read!!. 5 stars all the way! Once you start reading it’s going to be hard to put it down. So addicting!

The Maidens. Interesting read. The ending was not expected. Loved it!!!

Stilted dialogue.. and way too easy. Drags on in the beginning but it does start to pick up later on. However I could hardly pay attention to all the sinister breadcrumbs that were being dropped by the author (which is a shame because it really added to the intrigue of the plot) because I kept snickering at how stilted the dialogue was!! The apparently “born and raised” American from freaking New York talks and behaves like he’s a cross between an English viscount and Count Dracula. This was unintentionally funny and took away from the seriousness of several moments. Also, everything is made too convenient for Mariana to “discover” and apparently the detectives in Cambridge are morons. This was really quite sloppily written. The Silent Patient was a much more original story and and way better crafted, too.

Amazing!. This book was simply wonderful! It was eye-catching, enrapturing, and most of all beautifully written! This novel reminds me very much of The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Riveting!. This was a page turner and a thinking person’s book! I thought it was as good as “The Silent Patient” and that is saying something!

****. Such a great book. It started off SO SLOW. But the ending will have you questioning everything you thought you knew! Great writing!

Slow burn, great twist. 4 stars for the characters and their twists! Well written and I love all the Greek references. Minus 1 star for the slow burn. Too slow.

Very Invigorating. The whole thing really draws you in

Amazing work !. Beautiful work I love how this book is a bridge to the silent patient. Plot twists are always well done.

ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!!!. WOW another great read, I read the Silent patient and was excited to see what else Alex Michaeldes had in store for me, I didńt know if it would live up to my expectations but it absolutely did AND MORE!!!!!

Great book!. I really enjoyed this book and am recommending it to my friends and family!

Ok. It was ok. His first book was much better.

Good but not great!. I LOVED Silent Patient and had really high expectations for The Maidens, but I was somewhat let down by the abrupt ending. I felt that the book was very much a slow burn, and had so many intricacies with the numerous characters and potential “suspects”, but left me dissatisfied by the outcome. I was emotionally invested in several of the characters who’s stories ultimately didn’t go anywhere.

The Maidens. The Silent Patient was a remarkable read. The Maidens was wholly unremarkable. Poor character development. Sub par plot. The author may be a one hit wonder.

Read it in one sitting. Very good. Kept me intrigued

Really good!. I loved this book! It almost started to drag on a little in the middle, but it picked back up and finishing it was so worth it. This author is 🔥

A close second. Not as good as the first book but none the less I read the whole thing in a few days

Hasty.. Typical second book syndrome. So many sloppily tied loose ends which deserved more time and were unrealistically jammed into a mere paragraph. In addition, the way a certain recurring character was half heartedly added seemed contrived. A lot of potential, hoping a third work will show growth.

Worth the time but not great. Nice twists, and good story… but ending needs work.

Blew me away.. The Silent Patient is fantastic; The Maidens is even better. A stunning piece of literature, it had me captivated at every word. The imagery, style, and cleverness of this novel is truly superior. And the twist is out of this world.

Wow what an amazing book. So many twists and turns, just as good as the Silent Patient, maybe even better!!!!!

Sophomore Slump. Perhaps my expectations were too high. Perhaps it’s just not good. Probably somewhere in the middle.

Good read. Interesting book. It gave a little glimpse in the book The silent Patient…but did not connect fully. Interested it there will be more. Great twist.

Truly terrible. This is a lazily-written, lazily-researched, apparently unedited novel by a deeply stupid man who wants us to believe his characters are much smarter than he is. They are not. Not one character is remotely interesting, let alone likeable, if that’s your thing. I trust that Alex Michaelides speaks English and wrote this in English, but it reads as if it was translated from a Dutch translation of a Finnish novel by someone who doesn’t speak Dutch. He’s already made enough money from his terrible prose and his intelligence insulting plotting. Don’t buy this. No one should be rewarded for this behavior.

The Maidens. I love a good who done it or in this case who’s doing it! I thought it ended abruptly, but not so much not to give 5 stars. Looking forward to the next one.

Interesting. It’s a pretty quick read and a good story, but it’s a little too slick, too manipulative. The twist doesn’t make a lot of sense. I was surprised but there’s no way to see it coming. I like it better when you realize you’ve been seeing things from one perspective and failing to see the other one. Or any other one. This story feels a bit lazy.

Great book. Loved this book. Characters are painted perfectly and it’s never boring. Page turner for sure!! Give this book a read.

Another great thriller!. Love this fast paced thriller! What a talented author. I hope for more books from him soon!

Amazing. loved it all

All of the things. This book will have you feeling every emotion as you journey through every twist and epiphany that are scattered throughout. I love this author and I can’t wait for his next book. I highly recommend reading The Silent Patient afterwards or before for a fun surprise 😉

Disappointing. After reading and loving The Silent Patient, I expected more from Michaelides second book. The Maidens felt rushed and the storyline stilted. I could easily imagine a writer given an advance for a second book and rushing to meet the deadline. There was not enough description to make me believe, or even care about, the story.

Ending… I need more. I’m not sure if this is as good as the silent patient. I do love how he connected the two books towards the end of the story. I’m left wondering if there will be a second of this book because I felt the end was left off in mystery. What happens next? Will he tie it all together?!!

Does the Trick, with a Teist. There is a lot of slow-burning suspense in this novel. It’s plain and simple in the telling, while softly pushing the reader to the incorrect conclusion. The final twist and its setting was cinematic! I really enjoyed this book.

4.3. 4.3

Disappointing ending …. Ending was very disappointing - too rushed and too many unanswered questions.

I. R

The Maidens. Excellent book - keeps your interest too the reveal!!

Thrilling!. Great plot twist! Kept me interested the whole book.

Better than his last book. Best book I’ve read in a while. This was full of suspense with lots of twists and turns. I highly recommend it!

Good but. This was a good book. I stayed interested and I did not fully guess the twist. And it was interesting to have it connect with The Silent Patient. But like several other reviews have said, the ending left me like, that’s it? Still enjoyable but just wish there was more at the end.

Amazing!. I read The Silent Patient, which was absolutely amazing! I couldn’t put the book down and this book is even better!! I can’t wait for book #3! By far, my favorite author!

Underwhelming…. The Silent Patient was one of those novels you cannot wait to discuss with others because of its intrigue and brillant finale. The Maidens felt very rushed to me. Subplots we’re never given closure and the ending felt pulled out of thin air. Nothing seemed cohesive to me… I thought some of the writing was extremely trite/cliche. I finished it thinking, why are so many people raving over it? I wish I could have seen what everyone else saw but I just read a jumbled mess.

Riveting. A must read.

The maidens. Awful plot and writing.

Outstanding!. Just like the Silent Patient, I was glued to the story. Also like the Silent Patient, I never saw it coming. The Maidens is amazing!
