Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela Book Summary

"Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand history – and then go out and change it." –President Barack Obama
Nelson Mandela was one of the great moral and political leaders of his time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. After his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela was at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is still revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality.

Long Walk to Freedom is his moving and exhilarating autobiography, destined to take its place among the finest memoirs of history's greatest figures. Here for the first time, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela told the extraordinary story of his life -- an epic of struggle, setback, renewed hope, and ultimate triumph.
The book that inspired the major motion picture Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Outstanding journey of persistence. Excellent book. Returned from a vacation tour in South Africa and was compelled to read about Nelson Mandella. He is so revered in South Africa and this book gave me a better prospective of the journey and what Mandella and South Africa went through. Outstanding and a must read!

Excellent...What a great human being.... I'm not a heavy reader, as a matter of fact this is the 3rd book I had read, and it just AWESOME...i'm 25 yrs from latin america and I always believe that Nelson Mandela is just a great example to human race... After reading this book, is like I personally know Nelson, some outstanding quotes and way of view life that make me realize how fortunate I've been in my life. I will love to see a movie about his life. READ IT you will definitely loved it.

Awesome and Inspiring. I so enjoyed this book. I felt like I knew him just by reading his book. A great writer! What a life and I was moved when I finished reading the book. The horrors of apartheid in South Africa unbelievable and the fact that Mandela survived and moved the country forward - INSPIRING. Madiba, may you rest in peace and thank you!

In response to Doc TAP about "pitiful". There is really no use to waste any thought on ignorance and cowardly acts of those who use these social media outlets to voice their stupidity for all to read. They live for the reaction, but all the while knowing that they would never be strong enough to say that face to face to a group of those who had to live it. Always remember these people are weak who hide behind a computer all day with nothing better to do. I guarantee this isn't the first or last time this loser will post something so ignorant!!! Smh.

A piece of history. Just wonderful. Every page in this book seems to have its own life as it tells the story of our struggle as human beings living in a society. Definitely breath taking.

The one who have the title pity.... You are a idiot I can't believe you you must be white I am a black woman and if he did not do what he did I would still be a slave and I want you to know that I am half Russian and I am proud to be I black woman😲😵😈👿😾😾

Outstanding human being. Truly inspiring. Nelson Mandela is the real O.G.

Amazing. Awesome book I learned something new on every page thanks!

Long walk to freedom. Every person in the planet should read this book

Required Reading. This should be read by every literate person in the world.

Will miss you, President.. "R.I.P. Nelson Mandela" is someting I will refrain from saying. It will never be enough for you, Madiba. Bless us so that we always walk on your path of humanity. You will always be alive in all those gifts and qualities you have left behind.

Personality. This is the most incredible story of recent history. As this great man states at the end of this book- "perhaps the deepest parts of oppression bring out the characteristics to overcome..." the story told in this book and the people described is nothing short of the story of the founding fathers of the United States. These people are personalities, people who through the the most inconceivable circumstances, motivated by an unexplainable passion for equality and change, have actually really prevailed and created the most valuable item known to humanity...a free thinking and living piece of land for its citizens in which to properly reside. P.S -- I do believe there were once Tigers in Africa ;)

To Nelson Mandela. Admiration falls short as a word to express what I feel, and anyone who has the blessing of reading this autobiography. Not only do you have the possibility to live side by side with Madiba his life, but through his eyes you have the privilege to know the evolution of one of the world's most shameful parts of human history, taking with you only lessons that feed your soul for your whole life. With every word, every page, every chapter, my admiration for this freedom fighter grew more and more. I remember I was in highschool in the nineties and I had a South African english teacher, and i still remember how the situation of the south african people and their struggle marked my memory for life. This is an example of greatness. This shows how, when you have a greater goal than yourself in your life, or your immediate family, makes you do unbelievable things, of the kind that only giants in history have done. I do not wish to be in that possition because that will only mean that I wish for inequality, injustice and lack of human dignity. But if ever in a similar situation, I hope I can have the integrity and the strenght in my soul to rise to the occasion and transform my desires into the desires of the many. It is almost unfathomable to think I will meet Madiba in person, althiugh that would be one of my greatest joys. Nevertheless, I feel that I met him thriugh this pages, for that I am humbled and full of gratitude, profound admiration and happiness. Maria Virginia Jaramillo. Colombia.

Amazing. I am in awe of Mandela's humble spirit amidst the trials and oppression from every aspect of life. A must read for everyone!

Outstanding. You inspire me every day of my life. Thank you for that. Your Friend, Tali

Great read. I enjoyed it. If you’re into a lot of details he breaks down every part of life, sentencing, and political run.

Humility in the midst of oppression. Story of a man who lived his beliefs. Perseverance at the highest level. Self sacrifice and example of what God wants from his children. Humility!!!

Response to "pity". As a white South African woman, I am appalled at your scathing attack of a man, who can only be described as a Saint. So many South Africans of all races myself included, have been subjected to the loss of loved ones, due to the violence of a country in the throes of trying to recover from Apartheid. Without Madiba and his unyielding resolve to reconcile this country of ours, what worse fate would have befallen all our citizens? At least he did this with a forgiving heart and the grace of a true gentleman. As citizens we are glad that his passing was in the company of his loved ones and that he has peacefully moved on to the heavens. RIP Madiba xxx

Ethos of Our Time. I don’t know why it took me so long to read Long Walk to Freedom, but it was definitely worth the wait. Few individuals conjure the ethos of our time like Nelson Mandela. He embodies our hopes, fears, dreams and disappointments. While I never had the privilege to meet the man in person, it is enough to know that I lived in the same lifespan. It is a primer on how to persevere in the liberation of oppressed people everywhere - always.

Must read. Must read! Long but worth it

Your life will not be complete without.... This book not only "should be read by every person alive"(Boston Sunday Globe), it should be studied so as to implement the many virtuous lessons in your own life from the most resilient, intelligent, generous and honest man alive today. He is quite candid in his thoughts and feelings regarding what he experienced and accomplished from his first memories in childhood to the point of being elected the President of South Africa. The only significant difference from the paperback version I have is the lack of photographs yet I don't regret purchasing this digital copy as this version allows highlighting and searching this classic wherever I might find myself. It works smoothly on my iPhone 3G. The only way this autobiography of the utmost historical import could be better would be to include his life up to this evening after the closing of the 2010 South Africa World Cup! In other words... "A serious account of a life and a cause... wonderful insight into the man who is his country's combined Washington, Lincoln and Gandhi." -- Montreal Gazette "Mandela writes with rare and moving candor." -- The Economist "A deeply touching chronicle of one of the remarkable lives of the twentieth century." -- Christian Science Monitor

Just great!!. Bellamente escrito. Todo un testimonio para la humanidad y el mas grande ejemplo de reconciliación y grandeza personal.

Long Walk to Freedom. Mr. Mandela provides the reader with an in-depth, accurate and compelling history of the rise to power of the ANC in this rather long book. He certainly leaves no stone unturned, or small fact overlooked as he takes us through his 80 or so years of his tumultuous life in South Africa. A historical must read.

So engrossing I didn't want him to leave prison!. Mandela's a leader in discipline, will and the integrity bound with the courage against seemingly intractable racism. An engaging writer, he tells His story with both detail and passion. Couldn't put it down!
