U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton Book Summary

Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable. Even more so when Kinsey Millhone's only lead is a grown man dredging up a repressed childhood memory-of something that may never have happened...

Guess they can't all be extraordinary. This is the first time the reader gets 'whodunnit' before Kinsey. The story was transparent almost from the beginning. And as a result boring and a bit tedious to finish. Perhaps it was the new format undertaken by jumping back and forth in timeline that caused what could have been the usual "on the edge of your seat to the end" turn out disappointing. I am a fan though and one disappointing read won't keep me from grabbing the next one when it hits the shelf.

U is for Undertow. Four stars for a well plotted mystery with good characters. All the pieces of the puzzle fit together nicely in the end. My one complaint is that the writing could use an upgrade. The author is way too fond of itemizing the protagonist’s actions, starting each sentence with “I”. That got very tedious.

One of the best in the Series!. Overall I enjoy Grafton's Kinsey Millhone books but some were a little less exciting & repetitive... NOT U! Loved this book! If you put the alphabet series down to take a break after a few slow ones, pick it back up you'll be pleased!

U is for Undertow. Good plot and good character development. A nice light read for murder mystery fans.

Great ending. Too much exposition.. Grafton was able to stir my emotions a few times and mostly at the end of the book, but the story covers various people and decades and the set-up and exposition are difficult to follow unless you have long periods of time to read it. I tend to read at night one chapter. This isn't a book for that.

U for Undertow by Sue Grafton. This was the best of all her books so far. It was so entertaining, I could hardly wait to get back to it. Even in all the back and forth in the years, she never missed a beat. I have read all the books to U. I’m eagerly waiting to see what she has in her last few books.

Great story telling. I so enjoy reading her books. The story always has enough drama and suspense to keep me wanting to read another page.

U IS FOR UNDERTOW. Sue Grafton and Charles Dickens are my favorite authors, Sue for the 20th Century (mine), and Charles for the 19th (hardly a man is now alive...) U(ndertow) may be her BEST BOOK, or maybe that's what I'll say about each, second time around.

Disappointing. I've made my way through the rest of the series and found this book the weakest to date. The author appears to have gotten a bit bored with her own series and so has now introduced new devices to keep herself interested (or so it seems). This largely includes skipping back and forth in time and from various characters' points of view. For the first time, I found myself skimming whole paragraphs of on of Ms. Grafton's books due to my own boredom with the tangential, wordy "historic" detail entirely irrelevant to either the plot or an understanding of the characters. There were multiple inconsistencies (including a very central one pertaining to the timing of a the witnessing of a key element if the crime) which are never explained or resolved (did he see what he saw? If so, when? How does this square with other information?). The book did NOT really explore the issue of false memories except in a tangential plot point that was awkward. It did not tie together the prior elements of an event of "false memory" with current issues except in a rather pasted-on and lumbering manner. Very disappointing.

U is for Undertow. Another great read. I have read them all now. Can't wait for the next one... 'V'.

U is for Undertow. The best one so far!

Grafton does it again.. I never get tired of Kinsey. Thanks, Sue!

U. One of the best of the series!

U is for Undertow. This was the best of all the Alphabet Mysteries! Kinsey has developed and so has the author.

U is for Undertow. As always, a great read! And I still have 4 more to look forward to reading before I start with A, again. RIP, Sue. Kinsey lives on.
